It's not just trains getting battered by trees. I used to drive buses for Stagecoach from Chester to Liverpool on the Wirral.
I worked there for 4 1/2 years and lost 6 mirrors at about £350 each, + labour and lost revenue; about £1000 per Mirror!
How much to cut them down and kept them trimmed???? A lot cheaper!!!

Make sure you have a few spare floors for the flats guys, the developers are going for planning permission to add extra floors onto 3 of the blocks.

I wonder if each section has enough weight to stay down when 4 electrics all pass the same section at the same time.
Went to Stranraer in Sept 2021, the trees along that route from Ayr were stupidly over grown we thought we'd lose a window when the heavy branches cracking off the quarter-light window fins. I guess because all the trains have no opening windows they thought they could save money by not sending out the rail/road tractors with flails on them at night any more, whatever happened to track gangs along the lines today? Look a picture in the 40s, 50, and even the 1960s and the cess was clean and trees were cut 10 feet away or never grew to an extent they do today.
I guess back in steam days the railway had to be kept well groomed or the engines would do it for you!
People will travel on Sundays, Pete, if they are reliable, predictable and run on time
Another problem the rail companies have to battle with was the daft pandemic lockdowns and the unplanned move to WFH - business passenger numbers have still not recovered and therefore they're having to rely on leisure which isn't as profitable. Never forget that all this economic turmoil is entirely of our own making. They've got away with it very lightly in the election. So entirely blaming companies like Avanti is a little unfair.
On a lighter note, hope to make it to Chester in August. Was planning to visit at the Model World Live at Birmingham except, ironically, the West Coast mainline was shut due to engineering works and I did not fancy getting up at 6am to battle with coach replacements!
When is Pete going to be at the cathedral? I've got a black 5 from the Hornby Waterman collection I'd like him to sign
The layout will be at Chester Cathedral on 1st August 2024 till 31st August 2024 I am sure he would sign if for you he is a great chap as are all the Railnuts. 👍
