How 'The Zone of Interest' Re-Invents Visual Storytelling

- 'The Zone of Interest' is the new five-time Oscar nominated biopic by visionary director Johnathon Glazer. Following Rudolph Hoess, the Commandant of Auschwitz from May 1940 until November 1943 and his family in their home which was build attached to the walls of the concentration camp. This bizarre fly-on-the-wall film never takes the audience into Auschwitz, but through sound design and performance, it is arguably a more difficult watch than other films which do.

when Rudolf says to his horse “I love you” is a powerful & telling scene.
So powerfully boring lol.
@@Ryan-zv3osbro has nothing else to do but hate comment on this film lol
@jakemasterton this lady is rude, so I'm here lol.
@@JakeMasterss I always annoy rude people.
@@Ryan-zv3osnobody asked you 🤡
The violence in this film is the indifference. The compartmentalized emotions. In the end, his own body begins to reject his repression. His subconscious mind is revolting against his perverse values and misaligned motivations.
@MrSmcara But the evil in him is so powerful (as in Putin, in Bashar Al-Assad and others) that the body cannot expel it.
@MultiSUPERLATIVO I don't believe in evil. I believe it is the perversion of human nature. I believe we evolved to be kind and caring or risk being ostracized from the groupthat protectsand provides for us. Anti-social behaviors are punished in nature. Unless you're born a psychopath you are bound to suffer physical rejection of this level of indifference to human suffering.
i bought this movie & have watched it twice already. I notice something new each time. Everyone should see it.
Only twice? Even you sound like you're bored of it?
Werde den Film auch wegen der vielen symbolisch starken Details noch mal schauen .
My take on the ending - he is understanding the true horror of his actions - it’s almost as if he has watched with Holocaust Museum footage like we just have. The music becomes extremely loud - and the only other time the music is heard is during the scene where the girl leaves the apples. I’m not religious but I heard this as ‘the voice of god’, awful and impossible to ignore, and both the girl and Hoss are reacting to their conscience at those points. I read about Hoss after watching the movie, and read that he wrote to his son on his deathbed, after apparently repenting and returning to Catholicism, saying ‘listen to the voice of your heart’.
@MrMusicbyMartin Only in this film. Because in real life he maintained to the end that he was loyal to the great plan of the German Fatherland. His children to this day support the claim that their father Rudolf was a wonderful father and nothing people say about him is true. They claim that the father never committed crimes, something that is very common among many of those involved in those events.
Let's face it that we are all capable of evil by compartmentalising our thoughts and feelings. When confronted by vegans who question us whether we have compassion for farm animals, we respond by eating meat in front of them. We refuse to know the personalities of "our food", we mute out their last screams.
The clothes Hedwig put on the table for her Polish servants to pick were womens' slips. Not baby clothes.
I just finished the book when I heard this was coming out. I love Sexy Beast and Under the Skin, but like the latter which is also based on a book ( I like the movie more ) he only really uses the source material as a spring board and so they have little relation to the source. A bit like Kubrick. So the idea of the banality of a family life where the father is a pretty nondescript and prosaic character who just happens to be the commandant of Auschwitz I expected and felt ( on first viewing) not quite enough to substain the whole film. It has it's moments ( the sound and the music are superb), visually it's impeccable. I will watch it again and I'm sure I will get more form it. Kudos to Jonathon Glaser tough.
Yes, the house is the same, and tit was next to Auschwitz….the guide showed us there.
Actually, you're wrong. "Production designer Chris Oddy spent several months converting a derelict home beyond the camp wall into a replica of the Höss residence, and started planting the garden in April 2021 so that it would be in bloom when filming began."
The name of this kommandant bears a “umlaut” (dubbel points on the ö) Höss, and that makes is sound like Hus or Hùs. Please correct your pronunciation accordingly. This villain was a real nasty Jerry.
That’s not how you pronounce it. I’m swedish, and ”Ö” is very hard to pronounce för english speakers. It’s the more or less the same in german. You have to hear it, and watch how you shape your mouth to get it right.
That's not how you pronounce Hoess.
to think that the wife “hedwig” remarried & came & lived long life in AMERICA !! OF ALL PLACES 😡😡
The house is exactly the same.
Similar
what about that scene in the garden house with that man
@catherinebreitfeller669 I captured the message that Hedwig cheated on Rudolf with that servant (the gardener, handyman) as Rudolf himself cheated on his wife too, with that lady, at his office!
Another crushing element of this film is the utter lack of sentimentality. We find no cathartic relief through a mournful score or emotional manipulation. We are left to steep in the stark absurdity of a blatant misalignment of human nature.
Gerade das macht den Film im Vergleich zu allen anderen Filmen zum Thema Holocaust, so besonders ~so anders.Er berührt eher den Verstand als das Gefühl.
@magustef8710 well said.
"That's exactly what makes the film so special ~so different compared to all other films on the subject of the Holocaust. It touches the mind rather than the feeling."
The doc-feat movie about bio and ending is making...
The Zone of Salvation
And Black Book.
this movie should win best picture!! however “poor things” probably will. disgusting
We reckon Oppenheimer will win.
Are you already upset about something that has yet to happen?
I absolutely hated Poor Things it was absolute rubbish and sooo long .
Guys, find out what you're talking about before you have a podcast!
We very much believe that the understanding and enjoyment from a film should be separate from any source material or real world bases - although it can be interesting to know, a film should be able to stand on its own two feet and be criticised by its own merit. We're a film channel and not a history channel!
@@SlatedPod Perhaps, it's not for me.
i didn't find it hard to watch except for a few scenes (eg the teeth). If you've seen Cabaret, Good, The Counterfeiters, Conspiracy, Boy with the Striped Pajamas, the idea of indifferent banality has been covered before. I might have been more affected by the sound if i'd seen it in a cinema.
Hello.
It's just a movie. If you look closely, the technique used by Glazer just looks like a reality show like the "Big Brother" (for countries where this reality show exists, you will see the similarity), with the still cameras.
I bet if other filmmakers start making more films like this, you'll find it boring yourself. I don't see anything that surprising.
Most boring movie ever.
We don’t care if you find it boring, sorry. That’s not a relevant criticism, it’s just dumb if you think to find entertaining a film on the holocaust for gods sake. 😂
@@madameversiera Its very relevant when talking about a movie. In fact most people wont watch boring movies like this. No matter the subject.
I'm sorry we don't care about your comment, since its careless to presume I wanted or others want to be entertained by the holocaust.
You would have to be blind to not see how boring this film is.
@@madameversiera like 4 mins of pure black at the start, super boring to have nothing on a screen. Oh yeah that is super artsy lmao.
Then why are you here?
Yeah hard disagree
Think about how many things in our lives we chose to ignore to be able to carry on with our happy lives. This family is is all today.
This is the challenge it makes to you
