John Constantine: Hellblazer - The Soul Play

  • WATCH THROUGH THE CREDITS!
    Made for a fraction of the cost of a single FX shot of the Constantine TV show, by talented Midlands based creators working for no pay, this all swearing, all smoking, all grifting tale of John Constantine is set in the Vertigo Hellblazer continuity, months after Peter Milligan's final issue, and, we think, features the most accurate portrayal of Constantine yet put to screen.
    Made as a rallying cry for fans of the Hellblazer book to get behind, The Sole Play is our effort to shake some sense into DC-Vertigo, with the simple message BRING BACK HELLBLAZER! (and if they could see themselves hiring Si Spurrior as the writer, all the better).
    Not credited was the guest appearance by TONY BROWN in his cameo as Chas Chandler, additionally, as well as her credit as on-set sound, SARAH KERRY also contributed in several areas of post-production sound.

    this captures the essence of John better then TV show. The TV show portrays him as a tortured anti- hero, but in reality most of the time his is just a selfish bull shiter with a huge ego that wants on take on demons and show the the under world who is boss and he wants to do it with a swagger as he is portrayed here, not constantly frowning and angry like the TV show, Johns personality is the thing that carries the comics not that magic or demons but how he uses his own wicked sense of humour and his ability to manipulate others to gain the upper hand.

      Many thanks, pal, I (the writer/director) am a huge fan of the Vertigo Hellblazer comics and wanted to layer as much comic based info into the dialogue as could seem natural and hoped it would hit home with other big fans. I was upset when DC cancelled the Hellblazer title to (mis-)use Constantine in New 52, so for all intents and purposes wrote this film to be issue #301 and picked up where Milligan left off and put the characer back in the right direction. Anyways, I'm very glad you enjoyed it.

      Richard Reynolds,
      This is pretty faithful to the source.
      I've got a few minor complaints, but that's more to do with the way I am than anything.
      Constantine is from Liverpool but he could have lost his accent over time and his look was originally based on Sting but how many people look like Sting, never mind how many look like him and can act?
      Despite the fact that I'm moaning about little things, this is a masterwork and I wish you the success that you so richly deserve.
      By the way I like that his name is pronounced properly for a change.

      @@abegarfield3754 many thanks, dude. I too have quibbles with most adaptations beyond generally respecting them, it's a fun part of fandom. To address a few of your own, I wanted this short to act, essential, as issue #301 of the cancelled Vertigo run of the comics, so I wanted an actor that looked more like Simon Bisley's later interpretation than the early stuff, and I thought Dave looked dead-on. As far as the accent goes I would've liked as slight Scouse lilt, but Dave isn't great with accents so I thought a neutral accent would be better than a crap one, justifying it (if only to smooth out my own quibbles) as you point, with the fact that he left Liverpool in his mid-teens and has done hefty traveling since.

      Matt’s Constantine suffered from mediocre writing at times. However he did say that he’d live to come back and do the “real” John Constantine. I’m absolutely sure he would absolutely kill it as the more morally bankrupt, cunning and manipulative John that we see in the Hellblazer comics. Matt is absolutely perfect and if he gets fantastic writing it would be one of the best shows ever made, because Constantine has always been one of the best writing and story in all pf comics.

    Amazing work Walking Dream Studios you all did a really great adaption of John Constantine of Hellblazer. While Matt Ryan's version may not be 100% based on the original which his portrayal is based more leading to the New 52 version being much more younger then the original vertigo comics which I don't understand why this doesn't have enough views when its very great.
    Also I loved how well, David Chabeaux delived his lines and gave the style of how Constantine really is as the heavy chain-smoker, gritty filthy bad mouthed, con-art sorcerer of the dark arts he is. Plus it was very shocking how David Chabeaux looked like Constantine as I looked at an artwork of John, batman and swamp thing which the picture is in this link right here nerdynothings.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/bdaftermatha.jpg

      Anytime guys :) and hey, just keep your heads up you'll make that happen you just gotta go our your way and think big and show your talents more like I saw your video linked on a website saying your video is what true Constantine fans want.
      It was an article discussing that even though NBC's Constantine the TV show maybe canceled but this short film will give fans what they want. Also I'm not sure too if you heard that news that Constantine the TV show might be canceled a lot of people are upset on it doing #saveconstantine on Facebook and twitter.
      NBC saying not many people are watching it but yet the ratings are good still Idk its just NBC expects that the series would bomb real quick which shows don't work like that plus Constantine just started too originally it was planned for 22 episodes but the slinted it to 13 and holding production to decide if it will be renewed for a season 2.
      Which I hope so because it hasnt even got a chance to shine yet also to stop people are comparing it too much to supernatural since they are doing the cross country demon hunting set up in american but Constantine is way more different then supernatural. In fact many ideas were taken from Hellblazer even the angel cas dresses up like Constantine but again good luck to you all and I hope you all make more amazing videos like this just and never give up too :)

      +kory stephens I also hated Milligan's run, I thought I was the only one who did until now, but, you know, mate, the thing with Constantine it's that he can't be killed by a lousy writer, a shitty movie or whatever...the Hellblazer always comes back, in one way or another.

    i was just at the comic book store and tried reading the new (Non Vertigo) Constantine series. I almost threw the issue across the fucking room it was so lame. It was like SACRILEGE to the original series. It was not the same. So I ended up buying an old issue of the Lady Constantine series, which I've never read

    • @wanderin_stud499
      @wanderin_stud499 Před 8 lety +2

      You'd better off with the Vertigo than the new 52 ones... A friend of mine was about to buy some issues but I threw him Hellblazer 41-46, he's hooked ever since.

    • @abegarfield3754
      @abegarfield3754 Před 5 lety

      My thoughts exactly.
      The more recent books look nice but that's not what Hellblazer/Constantine was about.
      It was the story and dialogue that carried it and made it so great.

    Even though it changed a ton from the source material, the Keanu Reeves Constantine film was pretty enjoyable. In the absence of a second season of the show or a reboot film, I wouldn't mind a sequel to the Keanu film. It was a lot of fun.
