- Hello oboists and oboe parents! In this week's video I review an Emerald oboe reed! These Emerald Reeds are found in many music stores across North America and are some of the most accessible oboe reed brands out there. I felt that making this video could serve beginner oboists and their parents when choosing which reeds to buy.
Here is the reed finishing kit I mention in the video: sandpiperoboe.com/products/re...

REED FINISHING KIT: I highly recommend this kit if you are learning how to adjust reeds for the first time!

i literally am on my way to private lessons (for oboe) when i got a notification for this video :)
Yesss!!! Have a great lesson!
I DID greatly enjoy this video :-) - thank you! Hooray for Blues for DD!
You are a really talented artist! Completely deemed to succeed! 😎
loving your videos; i was just wondering if you've ever tried legere oboe reeds and if so what your thoughts are on their synthetic reeds
Great video, you’re giving these young players excellent info❤️
Thank you Jarrett!!
Thanks for this video. I'm a beginner oboist and I've been trying to crow a C with my Emerald Reed and it's always a B flat. I wondered what I was doing wrong - but apparently, it's the reed.
Another reason to use a reed case instead of the tube the reeds come in is that those tubes don't breathe well if at all. My first ever reed I played turned green over a weekend when I left it in the plastic tube it came in after playing it. Not a fun time
My daughter was having a difficult time with this reed being inconsistent with notes... she said that it wouldn't hit the notes right all the time. She tried soaking it, and other methods but it's not working for her.
Any suggestions? Either to help her with this reed or where to purchase a better one. She's a freshman in high school... very musical, plays a variety of instruments but just picked up the Oboe about a year ago.
Do you have experience with buying reed batches from aliexpress and readjusting those? If you buy a kit of 10 and readjust, will maybe 2 of them turn out reasonable?
What is the name of the piece you played throughout the video? (5:04) It sounds amazing! 😁
Thanks! It's called Blues for DD by Jeffrey Agrell.
What solo is this?
Can you try the hard oboe reed
Hi Larry! Thanks for your message. I did try the Jones Double Reeds in all their strengths in that review but in general I'm not a believer in "reed strengths" so I find little value in following up with a different variety of Emerald reeds. Maybe I'm wrong!!
The usual with a bought reed....totally unstable. I don't see how these poor kids can even learn to play.
They are usually terrible.
It's not really a realistic comparison if its to a reed that isn't even available.
‘Clipped it’ !!?!?!? I image you had snips and cut down the reed. 🤔
