    Thanks so much for the tips on this! Trying to sync audio in any kind of multicam setting has been driving me mad. All the other tutorials show you how to work with random stock-like clips or sequences where a separate audio track doesn't need to be kept in sync. You're welcome Tim. Yeah I kind of feel like syncing waveforms is probably the weakest editing sort of task Resolve has in comparison to competing software. But it still can work for sure... It shines in the fact that it supports timecode better than the rest (or at least ties avid).
      I go back and forth with using and not using the speed editor each week. I probably cut at least 1 sync bin style multicam with it each week and then other days I'll just use a keyboard and gaming mouse or wacom pen.

My position, as if you hadn't guessed, is I'm a complete newb to video and video editing, so I picked up the Speed Editor (free with the Studio version of DaVinci Resolve 17) because for me it feels like it'll help me learn many of the basics (and beyond) of editing. I barely have 4 or 5 hours in playing around with resolve, so am quite lost at the moment, but seeing the many things you did in this video makes me want to now find the first video so I can learn all about it. I make piano videos just as a hobby to share with friends and fam, so I record with 4 cameras and then have to sync them all manually since my audio tracks go right to my daw, the cameras have nothing they're recording other than the clicking of the keys. After seeing this though, I'll probably turn on a monitor speaker to use this option and save me tons of time. On recording night, I could have hours of footage but only one worthy take of audio. If I get right into the video editing I'm fine, but I'm now trying to put a video together I recorded a year ago so had I known how to use this it would still be simple. I'm primarily AE CS6 and know it better than anything, but my footage is all 4k so bought Resolve studio 18. Learning all over again isn't going to be fun as in this case with how I found this video. I had followed along another tutorial and tied to use Resolve's sync feature to see if it would match up all those key click patterns, but somehow it go my audio track in the mix and I can't unlock the sync but now I know. Sorry for the long winded explanation, I just type fast. Which video should I start with to learn this inside out? Thanks for this and any recommendations you might have!

Once I get more comfortable with the cut page I can’t wait to see how much faster it speeds up my productivity. One thing I’m curious about is if you use the closeup feature with 4K footage scaled to fit frame size on an HD timeline, does it still retain all the pixel data from the 4K image or does it rasterize the 4K image to HD and then scale up causing you to lose pixel data?

    Thanks for making this video. There are some useful tips here. One thing I've noticed whenever I have audio that "sucks" is exactly what you experienced during this tutorial. I don't think resolve uses the manually linked audio at all during the sync by waveform operation. I think it still refers to the embedded audio. Must be a bug I think. Your workaround was great though. I didn't know you could adjust the sync on a timeline like that.

I've tried for nearly a hour now and have no idea anymore.. Thanks!!

    • @paulschlesier
      @paulschlesier Před 2 lety

      Ok, you described it perfectly fine! My situation is as following: We have a fixed audio (as camera angle btw. because it fits to no video from start to end) and 13 angles (takes) of video performance clips. Key was - like you did in the video, to once set in and out point to the audio file and append it in full on the newly created timeline, then the sync bin key on the speed editor worked and showed me all the angles.. that was a somewhat confusing one.
      I imaged I can go to a new timeline, choose the Sync bin as a source and then push in my angles, but Resolve needs a fundament that serves as a 'link' to the sync bin so to say.

I can't seem to get the lav audio to show up when I create multicams after syncing with timecodes. I can add new tracks and then mute the first one to ensure that the other track appears on track 2, but every new multicam timeline only gives me two tracks of audio.

    • @CreativeVideoTips
      @CreativeVideoTips Před 3 lety

      Thanks Charlie - this is a really solid question and I don't know the answer off the top of my head. In general resolve wants to always have sound on channel 1 in clip attributes for sync, but it wouldn't be a bad idea to mimic the same number of channels in that clip attributes window prior to doing a sync bin or multicam clip with them. I don't know if this answers your question so please go into more detail and lets figure out the best solution together.

    Not sure why once you build a sync bin that there is no way to reopen it in the Cut page. I think Resolve should have had the option to reopen. I found out about what you are calling the :"hack" because after working on music video, I realized that a couple of tracks were not quite in sync. Was frustrated that it seemed that I couldn't reopen the sync bin and fix it.
    This tutorial will help others that had that same frustration. Another tip is that when you open the sync in the edit page as you did, if you temporarily unlock all the track, you can grade the clips and then go back and relock them. Then when you drop clip down they have a grade on them.

    • @CreativeVideoTips
      @CreativeVideoTips Před 3 lety +1

      You can right click on any sync'd clip in the sync bin and say "open sync group". However the detail you have to work in this window is pretty terrible currently. Great tutorial but resolve hasn't scored a 10 yet with the speed editor and live multicam. The Live o/wr is everything but live. They have made so many functions that are quite nice but live editing a sync bin or multicam is impossible with the Speed Editor. I want to be able to hit play and then just choose the camera i want by hitting "cam 1" or "cam 2" etc while playing. Resolve stops when I hit a camera on the Speed Editor just as you show in the tutorial with the overwrite style of editing.
    Why can't they just implement real live editing as it's in a live TV studio?
    Well, in the Edit page you can edit a multicam clip this way with your keyboard, NOT the Speed Editor.
    I really hope they fix this issue, and if they have I would be really happy to know about it. I've been searching for a while now and cant find anything about it working that way.

      Great question - There are several ways to do this but it's easiest to do in the edit page. One simple way besides ripple trimming is to mark and in (i) and out (o) and then hitting the delete key (not backspace). This will ripple delete the in and out marks you made and poof be gone.

      Hi Yosi - you will have hit a limitation of the tool at that point. You would need to click angles manually on the screen - similar to if you were doing a traditional multicam in the edit page and in fact I would probably go to the edit page for something like that personally.

      I would generally do this after an edit is complete. When you're using sync bin it is worth starting using what are called "remote grades" in the color page. What this will do is apply the same correction to every instance of the same clip on the timeline.

    Why cant you throw in all footage in the timeline and have then synced to a long reference track? You can only sync one at the time in the timeline and than you will unsync the first one if you choose the next clip. If you do a mulitcam clip you get this done. But I liked to as a way to sync multiple clips also in the timeline.

    • @CreativeVideoTips
      @CreativeVideoTips Před 2 lety

      This is just a limitation. There is a workaround to doing one track per time that Billy Rybka covered very well when this feature a while back. It involves moving audio up and down as you go. Very clever. Plural eyes is something that will be able to do what you're asking.

    • @joelarvidsson

    - Error: Can't generate proxy? "Proxy media failed to generate for the following files"
    - Solution: Set to 1/4, not 1/16, or 1/8.
    - Why: The proxy output file can't be TOO small: "Resolve doesn't handle clips smaller than 256 pixels in either dimension."* This makes sense because you wouldn't be able to see a 720p file at 1/16 (there wouldn't be enough detail to make it useful visually).
    - It will generate a 4K file at 1/16, but a 1080p file, you have to set to 1/4 (or was 1/8 also okay? Test).

  • @DavidRosengarden
    @DavidRosengarden Před rokem

    Hey - your tuts are 2nd to NONE! Thank you! However, I received a confirmation email from Blackmagic directly that they will no longer support (as of v 18.1.x) what you do here: czcams.com/video/7LoYeWJgSoQ/video.html -- In other words, the shortcut keys to move entire clips by SUBFRAME is no longer supported as previous, but now (according to Blackmagic's email) the sub-frame will work only to SLIP AUDIO! Here's the direct quote from tech support at Blackmagic: "The software engineering team got back to us with an explanation.
    The Slip audio command now operates consistently with other editing operators. Essentially, handles are required for slip operation, be it sub-frame or frame accurate. This will not work on the media without clip handles."
    This is a DEVASTATING change for us (unless I'm missing what this means and how to overcome the change Blackmagic made with some other way of doing the same thing as you do in the time stamp I've referenced above) as we have no ability to timecode, audio sync will never work in our environment, and we MUST use an audible "clapper" and ability to align entire media clips by subframe according to those "claps" in the audio waveforms.
    Have you yet experienced this, and if so, what to do?

      Thanks Ahsan, if you are referring to kind of roll, trimming the angles out - that is specifically a cut page feature and only can be rolled out with the speed editor. You can always dynamically roll cuts with W, and then JKL as well though to trim any shot in the edit page.
