Are BBQ Grill Brushes Dangerous?

  • Grill brushes have been in the news a lot lately. The bristles can come loose and end up in your food, then in your mouth. They can be hard to get out and require surgery to remove. That doesn't sound like fun, but I was curious how often it happened and investigated the frequency.
    We all engage in risky activities every day. We can mitigate that risk by wearing a helmet when we ride a bike or use sunscreen before we go outside. This video shows a few tips on how you can reduce your risk of ingesting bristles or avoid the issue all together with some alternatives.

    Thank you for your time. I love your use of statistics to prove your points. I work in the ER as a DNP and thus have seen people who burned themselves with their grills. I never understood how people could burn themselves on a grill. That until My grill actually caught on fire because I didn’t clean it and that’s what led me to your videos. I almost burned my house. It was a big scary thing. I wish I would have watched your videos sooner. Thank you again

      I think everyone has to do that at least once. I've cranked up the grill after cooking something greasy and got a bad surprise. Luckily, it was 10 feet from the house and on concrete. I'm glad you and your house made it through. It's my hope that someone watches and prevents a disaster in their own life.

  • @BigLewBBQ

    Very good information Nd in-depth research. I think it is the dollar store grill brushes that are the culprit.
    I also believe that the reports of how dangerous they are are great exaggerated. I don’t have a gas grill I usually scrub my grates while they are off of the grill, then rinse them off with s garden hose before placing them back on the grill. Therefore even if a bristle was to come loose and stick to the grate, the rinsing process removes it before grilling.
    This video, like all your videos, is “top” notch.

    Nicely done video! I have completely gone away from the bristle brushes to clean my grates a few years back. I use what I call my charcoal canoe paddle ( wooden scraper ) or the coiled brushes only. I use a bristle brush to clean the inside of the pit only. I felt that it was a simple fix to just use a different style then to add another statistic to the list of possible dangers. I talk about this in a few of my videos also and glad you are bringing this up to your viewers!! I roll the dice enough in just normal every day activities so it was easy to just toss the bristle brushes in the trash. Thanks for sharing!

    The first time I ingested a wire bristle was the last time any of my cooking surfaces ever saw a wire brush! An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. I prefer to use the burn and steam method, and I always season my grill before cooking and burn and oil after I cook. Using cleaning products do nothing to kill bacteria and damage the seasoning of your cooking surface.

  • @marcbergeron8690
    @marcbergeron8690 Před rokem

    I have a triangular Weber wire brush and the bristles are firmly attached to the instrument. So the risk of finding one of these tiny devils on your gril is low. To add to security, I apply the wood brush just after having cleaned the BBQ with the wire Weber. This way, if by unlikely misfortune a bristle was to make its way to the grill, it would be removed.
    If you are witness of any wire on the grill, discard the brush without delay.
    There are small and relatively cheap metal detector on the market. Using them on your meat once cooked maybe could help.

    I think you are overstating the statistical risk from bristle bbq brushes. Can you show me your math on your calculations? I think you assumed 80mm ppl grilled per year... but did you account for multiple cookouts per year by those 80mm people?

    • @GrillTopExperience
      @GrillTopExperience  Před 5 lety +1

      I didn't want to get accused of saying there is no risk since it does happen. I don't have good data that could be used to calculate the risk of an individual cookout. 80M people a year grill and the number of injuries was also per year. I would guess that more than 30% of people use grill brushes too. That also overstates the risk.
      More research needs to be done. Are most of the injuries caused by cheap brushes or expensive ones? No one knows because it hasn't been studied.
