Bassey is a beast. What's really interesting is that I often prefer her vocal moments from her 50s onwards. How many other singers, can you say you prefer from that age onwards?
She's releasing another album this November in her early 80s!! She's truly deserving of her title as Dame Shirley Bassey.

Underrated by who ? Which bunch of nowadays insignificant ignorants ? Bassey is/was not at all underrated. She is/was the grande dame of British music hall. One of the most sought after vocalists of the past century. One of the top three international headliners in her field ( like Liza Minnelli and Dionne Warwick , in the absence of Streisand who wasn't touring in those years, much to her fans dismay). If you were old enough to be , say, a child of the 70's , you'd be aware of that. Even in those days , there weren't that many great female international superstars vocalists and Bassey of course counted among them.

Shirley is a mezzo soprano whereas Whitney was a full soprano. Mezzo-soprano singers are very dominant with their lower and mid ranges in terms of depth and audibility. It should go without saying that the sheer volume of Whitney's impressive mid-range won't overpower the volume of impressive Shirley's mid-range. For a soprano, Whitney definitely developed her mid-range masterfully and used it to great advantage too.

@Aaro Tähtivuori Very bright voice with actually a pretty high tessitura. The way she uses an edge belt (it's a form of belting) up to F5 shows her tessitura. She's also capable of singing in the zona di passaggio at literally speech volume. And the territory I'm speaking of here is above the mezzo territory. She is a soprano who learned how to sing low, but her lower range is still not that special. I can name plenty of sopranos with way stronger lows. And I can also link classical sopranos (even coloraturas and lyric sopranos) who literally sound like tenors when singing in their chest voice. Also another thing is - Jojo considers herself a soprano (she recently was asked about it on her Instagram livestream) and her mother also called her a soprano. Her vocal coach Stevie also calls her a soprano.

@Aaro Tähtivuori Well, the 'CZcams vocal community' misuses very simple vocal terms quite sadly. I wouldn't say it's right in most of the claims they have. Most teachers would disagree with what all of the 'educational' videos by people like MrSkinnyJeanz say. It's quite frankly misinformation. Also, regarding the F4 and F#4 bit - most pop singers quite frankly have underdeveloped chest voices. If you want to hear the potential of soprano middle range, listen to people like Maria Callas in opera. She's one of the most famous coloraturas and her chest voice is massive - for example in this - czcams.com/video/7Xws7wKuc4w/video.html. If you want a light high soprano doing the same - czcams.com/video/6t365da96z4/video.html. In general, people on CZcams have very weird standards and base voice types on stuff like 'having ease on G5 belts' which is ridiculous, as literally not a single adult will have ease up there BELTING. And none of them are wary of technique used. For example with Christina, they don't base her voice type off how she sings with the coordination she does, they just see that she's struggling around a certain area. There are a ton of things that people have to look at to classify someone.

It says in your description that Shirley is one of the most 'underrated and talented vocalists' singers ... really, what absolute rubbish. I've been a fan of hers since I was a kid in the 60s and she certainly has never ever been underrated. I've seen her live and she is electrifying. She has been hugely famous and successful since the 1950s and has a huge fan base, and still has. If she were to announce a concert at an arena even now, she would be a sell out. Underrated, she has never ever been. How about looking at the many very 'overrated' singers we have nowadays (and I use the term singer very loosely in most cases).

Check the sites that list the best female vocalists of all time! Shirley is no where to be seen, even on sites with over 100 vocalists listed. Britney Spears is on there, but not Shirley. For the life of me, I just don't understand how this can be! Technically, Shirley is certainly one of the greatest POP vocalists of the last hundred years, and she deserves to be on these 'Best Vocalist' lists. And, she should certainly be in the top 10!
