"Trashy trees?" I happen to like the way the poplars look. Nice form to them. True, they are not that sturdy and can and often do break in storms, but they look very nice. I planted a few on top of a hill about 200 yards from my home and they look very nice after 10 years of growing! Thanks for the video.

Great video. What is the best time of year to harvest the starter shoots, how long can they be stored in water before planting?

Great video! Im going to plant some in my back yard for fast shade whike native trees grow up. I'll try to prune the poplars so it doesn't get over 20 feet, and then chop them when the slow trees become useful.

    Fantastic5rfn:
Hybrid poplars are short lived (20-30 years). Consider planting them about 25-35 feet apart in the row with a longer lived tree, such as Austrian Pine and or Blue Spruce, planted in-between each poplar. Removing the poplars when they are about 10-15 yeas old to be replaced by evergreens growing in their shade. An alternative is to plant one row of poplars and other in evergreens listed. Hybrids poplars get big fast and soon die, but make great instant shade and wind break.

Lombardy poplars live only 15-20 years sometimes 25-30. Cottonwood lives 70 years sometimes 125-200 years. Aspen lives 25 years sometimes 100 years if it is in a good location. Balsam poplar and Tulip Poplars are longer living of the poplar tree species. White poplars live about 50 years. Poplars a a relative of willows.

Nothing about when to plant them such as spring or fall??

  • @TheGrilledCheeseSandwich

Getting rid of the roots can be a problem. They run vigorously, leaving behind dozens of new ones.
