    My daughter called her red eyed skink toothless. She makes the most amazing vocalizations. She is very spoilt, my daughter looked after reptiles at college so she's in good hands 😍
    Hers sits by the glass waiting to come out. She has isopods as her clean up crew. And she enjoys coming out to see people and even eats from your hand 😍

    I love that you had a surprise baby skink! I unsuccessfully tried to produce offspring from my two bearded dragons for about a year when I was younger. We had a few clutches that ended up dying before hatching, even with what we thought were optimal incubation conditions. We tried upping the calcium intake of the female because it seems like the eggs just weren't strong enough, and that's what we had read might work. I'm still happy to see this and was surprised it could happen so naturally, and I love your channel!

    When I could have fish I had a 55 gal fresh water community tank with a mini school of Hatchetfish. Like AnimalWonders I made sure to make them as happy as possible, but fish can have some very specific needs before they'll even attempt to breed so I never thought I would get any babies... Sure enough all of a sudden two of the fish broke away from the school and had a little tiny baby with them! It was really cool seeing how they parent since so many fish just birth and move on, or some times eat the babies, but both parents were glued to their baby and would constantly watch it. So cool to watch!!

    My Red Eyes Crocodile Skink's name is Lizzie. The name is partly from the movie Rampage and partly from the loss of a family member. Anywho, it fits her.

    I would be interested to hear Jessi's take on the following: while things are getting better, there are countless "reptile collectors" who refuse to advance their techniques. I have personally been rebuffed by the owner of a store where two subadult reticulated pythons were cohabitated in a 2'x3' cage with one stick, one small tub with 1 inch of slimy water, and no hides. How do you deal with someone who refuses to change just because "that's how things have always been"?

    I´d be interested to hear why you got his parents; doesn´t sound like they were rescues and if the demand for them is so high anyway and they can´t normally used for presentations... I can´t come up with anything but "they´re adorable and I want them". And that´s probably not a thought that would impress you :-D

    • @PrimroseFrost
      @PrimroseFrost Před 6 lety +7

      Sometimes they get animals that are less rescues and more overflow (e.g. Tika the turaco is from a zoo). Like, it's possible that someone selling reptiles had more than they could sell and so offered Animal Wonders the animals for cheap or free. In that case Jesse and Augusto would still have to make sure that the seller was legit and worth supporting. Also, just because they can't come out for public presentations, that doesn't mean they aren't used for animal education in other ways, like videos and maybe their summer camps.

    Very cool! But is it truly the best to be housing the baby away from their parents? Or is this a species that doesn't provide their hatchlings with care anyways?

    • @animalwondersmontana
      @animalwondersmontana  Před 6 lety +3

      alicattor1469 The mother actually does protect her egg, but once hatched the parents could potentially eat or become aggressive and injure their young. Also, like I mentioned in the video, if kept in the large bioactive habitat, I'd have no idea if they were eating or pooping so I'd have no information on if they were thriving or starving because the parents were eating all the food available. Being able to count the food items eaten and the size and quality of the poops is essential. Edit: the parents do not help the young get food, so they're not needed to help the baby survived in captivity.

    I could be preaching to the choir in this comment section, but please, please, please do your research before getting a pet, especially an exotic pet. Understand the animal's needs and personality. Consider how long they live. Is the animal social or solitary? Can you afford everything the animal needs to be happy and healthy? Is there a vet who specializes in the species you are considering? Do they need someone to be around most of the time are are they fine in an empty house while you're at work? Many, many things to consider while picking out the type of pet that is right for you. (This includes fish)

      English lost its true gender-neutral pronouns sometime in Middle English. I don't know what idiot forget about them, but unless someone invents a new gender-neutral pronoun, English speakers are stuck with having to vaguely use 'they' to fill in, or simply use 'he'.

    • @MidoriFlygon
      @MidoriFlygon Před 6 lety +17

      "they" isn't really that confusing if you understand the context. words aren't in a vacuum, they have other words and sentences and paragraphs around them, as well as visual clues if you're talking to someone. i do agree that it's annoying that we lost our old gender neutral pronouns, but "they" is probably the best to use instead of creating a new word no one uses which would be FAR more confusing than using "they". language and definitions evolve over time. sometimes they evolve in just a few years. also, "he" isn't really fine to use. We should probably stop using masculine pronouns and words as the "default" neutral.
