Honda XL350 - will a few miles make the smoke clear?

  • Not my finest moment, but we have to take the rough with the smooth. I am starting to wonder, unless the head gasket is at fault somehow, if the cylinder head might be porous, or even cracked ...

Hi Paul, this may or may not be any useful information, I had a vauxhall corsa with a very smokey engine once. I put another engine in it wich was a good one, it still smoked the same to my surprise. It was just oil that was in the exhaust. It cleared after over 150 miles. Rather than take your engine apart, I would wash the exhaust out with petrol then brake cleaner until its free of oil. Got to be the first move I think. Just a thought. Good luck.

I know that bike well. My dad bought one new, I rode it as a teenager, and now my sister has it. It is now ridden by my nephew as well, so that’s 3 generations of the family riding the same bike.

it would be interesting to see what it looks like with the exhaust removed . was the baffle repacked and the soaked in oil for what ever reason its all mighty odd.

Hi Paul. Head sounds likely. Had an exhaust stud which had snapped and drilled out too much allowing oil into the port. Also the oil is pumped to the top with some pressure.could be a fault or crack here. Good luck.

I have some vague recollection that AMC had a problem with porous castings of cylinder blocks in the late fifties. I would have thought that the work done on the bore might have eliminated that possibility, not sure about the head though. Good luck but if anybody can solve this problem, my money's on you.

Yep I reckon the rings aren't bedding in. I've found that once they fail they don't come back. Particularly if they are too hard. Had a similar experience with my A10 (as well as the previously mentioned B44). I bought the bike with an overhauled engine and literally brand new pistons that smoked like a beast on the near side. Gandini rings and dry assembly on a freshly honed bore was an instant fix.

Bit of a mystery, hope you find the cause, I look forward to the next video

Not trying to teach you to suck eggs, but would running it without the silencer (obviously not on the road) give you a possible answer?

Sorry about the problem Paul. For what it’s worth the bike seemed to run OK, so the smoke might not be a worry, if the plug doesn’t foul or you run low on oil. For what it’s worth, it only takes a small amount of oil to make a lot of smoke….anyone with an unmodified Norton Commander can vouch for this!

After a rebuild I'd expect it to smoke. It will probably burn off. I do things like put a bit of grease on the exhaust gaskets to hold them in, bit of diesel in the tank if it's going to be left alone empty for a while, etc. So first startup I expect several minutes of smoke.

Spectacularly beautiful countryside!, from admitedly flawed memory, Honda four valve heads from that time were a little soft-not enough metal between the seats.

Could it be a blocked crankcase breather? Nice little bike apart from the smoke! I'm sure you'll sort it Paul.

My guess is a crack either in the barrell or head.

hi Paul sorry about the out come so far, i know its more work and a step back but you could whip the head off again and sit on flat surface with some kitchen towel under it and fill the cam box up with petrol and see if it shows any sign of leakage maybe a hair line crack somewhere or from some other place, just a thought Paul anyway good luck with it Paul.

If the valve seals are good and piston and rings good. Liner OK. Any rubber o rings round oil passage ways on the head gasket. ???. Or a cracked head??

Bummer, check the oil level if not too high, perhaps oil pump is worn and doesn't pick up fast enough, however it would be strange for a Honda. Sounds and goes nicely.
