You got a point and i totally agree with you but sometimes you really need that buttery smooth gimbal shots as a car videographer shooting hand held rarely works.
So many more people need to see this. This is a lesson I wish I had learned many years ago and would have saved me so much energy and produced such better content. Thank you for this.
Been binge watching all your stuff man, I appreciate the fresh perspective!!
i love to hear that dude! thanks so much
A monopod is a very useful tool if you quickly want to switch from immersive handheld to smooth. With a square baseplate you can even mimic dolly shots (from left to right) by mounting the camera 90 degrees off on the monopod.
Awesome video as always. Man, your content is far more helpful and interesting than the other channels with thousands and thousands of subscribers.
Thank you Gio! That means a ton to me man.
All my life I've only ever wanted a gimbal, like I want it so bad. But then, you showed me a different perspective. Thanks man.
Absolutely. Love my c100
zukaitisfamily amen! The canon C series are such great cameras man
So good man, especially in this gimbal frenzy everyones in!
Absolutely Jarod! Appreciate you dude!
Thoroughly enjoyed this! Great work Danny. If you ever have the time, I'd love to see your camera setup in detail as you use it today, what tweaks you've made/things you've added or removed. I've been running a 5D mkIV for a while and will be adding a C200 to my gear next year. I'm juggling all the different ways I could/should set it up. I do a lot of documentary style shooting, interviews, promos/recruiting videos, and am adding weddings back into the mix this coming year. I'm also a Glidecam operator so this will balance nicely on it when I do need the stabilization. Thanks for the video, keep up the great work!
I came up filming skateboarding, for almost 10 years with a Sony VX1000 MK1 lens, such a heavy setup and plus the fact that I’m usually following on a skateboard myself, never needed a gimbal or even THOUGHT about it. Now with my little mirrorless setup, I’m going crazy because I can see every little shake! 😂 but this video made me realize, I just gotta rig out my setup and add some weight, and it will be just like old times 😉 thanks again, dude ✌️
Great video and true words! It’s like everybody is looking for the best gimbal for smoooooooth shots nowadays instead of achieving the right feeling of every scenery...
Love your high quality videos! Greetings from Germany ✋️
Thank you so much man! So glad you agree with me on this!!
GREAT video man! Handheld shots definitely help in giving the audience that raw and realistic viewing experience!
Coming from a FX3 user and subscriber, your video came JUST IN TIME for me and my FX3. I shoot Cee-Lo Green's new videos and I look up to you man. Great job on EVERYTHING!
YAS. Enough with everything being too freaking stable. Let’s give things a bit more ENERGY!
Jackson Hayes amen my guy! It’s all about the real feel!!
Or motion sickness 🤷🏻♀️
Watch my newest video than. You can tell me if it has energy or not. lol.
These tips are awesome! Thank you!
That's right! :) I use my gimbal just for specific shots, or when I need to keep some bigger and wider shot on concert for longer time. With handheld I can control every detail and follow the subject in 100% how I want to.
Filmate totally! It’s so freeing going handheld! Thanks for watching man!!
idk how i missed this video in the past 2 years, super insightful.
Awesome content as always. I was waiting for you to make this video!
Thanks Louis!! Haha yeah it was a long time coming.
Awesome vid and great tips. Love going handheld with my C200.
Thanks bro!! Yeah its the perfect run and gun cam.
Haha, the question I asked a few videos back has been answered by this one. Funny. Love your insights man!
Great tips Danny. Great video.
I really want to be better at shooting handheld. I'm thinking of adding a sandbag to my bmpccs cage to add the weight.
Awesome man!! every day better content👏🏻
PD: I would like to see a video about your gear (specifically your lenses and a little bit of everything)
Thank you man! I'll for sure make something. The lens I own and shoot most stuff with is the sigma art 24-70 2.8 not much to it.
Thank you so much, your thoughts about handheld shooting so reasonable, but your rig is huge 😁 keep going bro
I needed this. Thank you man
Completely agree Danny. I bought a gen 1 crane a few years back and only used it a handful if times. I do love it but only for certain shots as it starts to make everything look robotic. Also noticed that it's like a must have now for everyone... I'm trying to be different and develop my own style. Great video Btw 😍
Absolutely man! Glad you agree! The robotic feel is just not my style at all. Thanks for checking this out!!!
So glad I subbed! Absolutely love your videos!!
chelsea butz I’m very glad as well! Thanks so much Chelsea. Makes me happy to hear that!
thanks for the motivation to go back to handheld! just need more weight on my a7s iii but will come with a compact cinerig and v mount battery. sooooo thanks for that! ^^
Great video Danny, these days we see a lot of gimbals used its great to see the other perspective something we tend to forget about it doesn't have to be super smooth depending on the shot. Just subscribed, thanks heaps mate. :)
Thanks so much Peter! So glad to have you on board. Yeah some people just use gimbals to use them and it doesn't feel right sometimes.
Thanks Danny, awesome video
Great video Danny. Very informative. Thanks
Awesome vid Danny, your energy on this video is 🔥
NathanHoang thanks so much bro! Appreciate you watching so much!
hey bro. honestly??? this video changed my life and view. its what i needed. you inspire me. thank you!
you are so right Danny! thanks for sharing and I learn it! 😉👍
Of course! Thank you Kenny!
Nicely explained opinion!
Thank you!
Thank you so much for you video, good job!
Great Tips Danny! I just got a Gimbal But I'm tired to stable look. your video very helped me! Thank you Danny
For sure man! Thank you!
Zhuyian Crane. Takes literally 2 minutes to mount. But these are great tips to get feel. That water example was dope!
It's tough to mount a suited up RED on a Zhuyian Crane when you're shooting on bigger sets. It takes a good 30 min to switch to gimbal in that situation and you'll need an AC in most cases. That's more what I was referring to. But even still I just love the handheld look. They do it a lot in Moonlight. Its a great film. Thanks man!
Danny Gevirtz moonlight was dope! Yeah gimbals are only a “when needed” type shot. Learned a lot from this quick vid. I shoot on a small rig, RED someday. Keep up the 🔥 content. Digging the channel
completely agree with you 💪🏼
Exactly my thoughs. Now I feel less lonely
Haha you'll always have me on this! Thanks for watching!!
They are my thoughs too
Same thoughs here! I play with you guys.
Thank you so much. Love your work. ✊🏽
Thank you! Appreciate it!
This is actually great for someone like me who would love to get a gimbal in the future, but won’t be able to afford it for quite awhile. In the meantime I can still get some good stuff handheld
Great video! I shoot a C100m2 hand held & really like it!
Nomadic Native thanks so much for watching! Never used the C100 but I’m sure it’s awesome
Keep up the fire content 🔥 It is much appreciated.
Trevor Qualman thank you Trevor! Appreciate you man
Its nice to see somebody preaching for hand held! I almost always shoot handheld. The only real problem I've faced with that though is that my Sony a7iii isn't heavy enough. So buying a cage with attachments for the battery grip and handle bars etc helps to add more weight, and makes it way easier to do hand held movements with! I find adding handles to a cage actually makes it easier to hold the camera too!
Yo dude! Does your sony have internal stabilization? I know a lot of sonys do to make up for the lightness. But yeah nothing like having a big ass camera in your arms lolol. Thanks for alway commenting man youre the best!
@@DannyGevirtz Yeah it has insane inbuilt stabilisation! I just sometimes get those micro shakes from the camera being too light. But adding the weight removes that and I get great results. Plus I find gimbals SUPER uncomfortable! It doesn't feel natural to hold a gimbal. Or atleast not the ones that don't have handle bars. Aw and dude I'll forever drop you comments! You make great quality content and its nice to give the support!
P.S- Sorry for the essay haha!
@@andiebarry4110 Haha I love essays man. Yeah i always feel like i can never get a proper composition with gimbal shots.
I shoot everything on a tripod or Handheld. Very seldom I use a gimbal.
Only youtubers use Gimbal for everything. Gimbals are good for product shooting, comercials and or very specific shots with the motivation and meaning for the story to be told.
Same.
When I am trying to get shakey shots I find it helps to drink as much coffee as possible and hang around people who smoke right before a take. Having a camera assistants who have Parkinson's disease or seizures and let them handle the camera work for a while also helps. Nothing like having 'cinéma vérité' to get that real feel.
Totally agree with every word! And also, if there is just a little too much shake, warp stabilizer can take out a lot of jitters without totally removing the handheld look :) at least that’s what I’ve been experimenting with lately ;)
Thanks for watching Braeden! Glad you agree! I try to stay awake from warp stabilizer. It makes everything a little bit too jelly for me.
Thanks for making this!
Testing 123 thanks for watching it man!
I feel exactly the same about handheld shooting. Even about the feeling of shoot this way and also about the results. I like how organic and realistic are the handheld footages. I think is a matter of personal style as well. Happy to hear your comments and tips. Thanks for sharing your knowlegde. See ya!
Thanks so much!
Sweet. Thanks bro
Thanks for the video.
Very inspiring 💡 will try to shoot a sport video completely handheld next time.
Glad you liked it! Yeah try it out! It's liberating!
I've been always struggling with my gimble... thank you man
Of course dude! Thanks!
Nice vid! Nothing beats handheld!
Awesome video thanks for sharing man
Thank you for watching!! Glad you enjoyed it!
Just did music video recently with a heavier rock band and wanted a lot of handheld shots for this one to match how in your face the music was. Forgot how liberating it can feel to not be so tied down to gimbals and tripods. Think the end video is probably about 70% handheld shots. I like your 5 points of contact. Another method I recently tried was something Parker Wallbeck showed about having your entire right forearm under the whole length of the camera...almost like cradling a baby. It worked great! Especially when sporting a 70-20mm on there when it got a bit heavy. It is still 5 points of contact but just another way to use your muscles when one method starts to wear. Like to go back and forth in order to give you muscles breaks in a way.
Ash von Chamier for sure man!! Hope the music video turns out great. It’s def liberating. So much less stressful. Thanks for your comment!
@@DannyGevirtz Actually already finished editing it. Came out great. One of my favorite to date. Just waiting for the bands marketing team to decide on release date. Thanks!
I got little scared by the title at first because I bought Ronin S and it was quite expensive for me, as a high school student, so I needed to get some financial help from my parent. But the video wasn't about why gimbal sucks so I felt relieved 🤣.
It was a great video!! Thanks for the tips again. I always learn some new things from your videos 👍👍
You seriously deserve more views, likes, and subscribers 🙌🙌
And I really like how you put blue lights behind you, it looks cool !!
The ronin s is a great investment. You'll shoot tons of videos with it, but yeah just explaining why i love handheld so much! Thanks for commenting as always man!
Yes your right, I'm waiting for Cinema Line camera canon whit IBIS, it will be amasing!!
Jean-Patrick Peuvion maybe one day!!!
Huuuge shoutout bro! Loved the video! Topic is really on point :)
Thanks so much brotha!!!
Great stuff bro! Keep it up!
Thank you Griffin! Appreciate it so much
Awesome. Very helpful as a newbie. Subscribed. 👍🏼
So glad this was helpful for you Steve!!! Thanks for watvhing!
This is my favourite style for filming commercial style work, (if the story it calls for it) just need to add a few bricks to my BMPCC4K ^_^ Great video, cheers.
appreciate the insight danny. What advice do you have for handheld if the lens or body has no stabilization? i understand using a top handle, adding more weight to the rig, and shooting higher frame rates help, but what else would you recommend? appreciate your content man!
Great video!! Thanks
Thank you!
Great tips. I have recently shifted to more handheld work after making rig a bit heavier and definitely love it. Gimbals never do what you want so I try to only use them when the shot really calls for it.
Absolutely man. Gimbals drive me insane. So freeing when you're handheld. Thanks man!
I get so nervous watching you gesturing for emphasis with the camera hahaha :D love the videos :)
Hahaha thanks man
Thumbs up!
...it does depend on the camera tho. When shooting with c100/c200 I LOVE shooting hand held.
But these little full frame mirrorless cameras I'm on these days....yeah...I either need the gimbal or weight it down heaps !
PhilWittmerFilms thanks for watching man! For sure! But there’s many ways to make the dslr stable. I’ve done it for years
@@DannyGevirtz sometimes...we 'think' our DSLR was stable lol. Been doing it for years :p
(...but it in the edit...)
Right on!!!!!
John Stanson thank you for watching John!!
Having a lens you can focus or zoom without judder is probably the biggest thing for me. Oh, and stepless aperture when the light is changing too.
you come across extremely authentic in your videos.
Thanks I really agree with u ! Have you done a video on your rig handheld set up ?
Yes! I have been doing a lot of handheld video with my A7III and I love the results! You can get much more creative with your camera moves and positioning
I totally agree, my mind moves quick in the creative realm so I need to be one with the camera.
I have the A73 and find with a stabilized lens it's quite steady. I shot my entire feature with it! and got compliments from industry cinematographers. This is really motivating for me to start making Stock Footage handheld. I nearly bought an expensive gimbal but I won't quite researching until I find what works for me, not what many of these YT commercials tell me I need, Lol.
Nice. As I was watching, I was thinking that this works with a heavy cinema camera but not with a small mirrorless and then got addressed it...haha. Good info. Nice looking videos too.
Michael Turner haha for sure. It’s doable with smaller cameras. Thanks for watching Michael!!
love your channel's content brooo! Can you try to make a video on how to shoot footages look as close to your c200 with a sony a6500? in terms of profile picture settings, lens, and filters. thanks!
Heawie Chow thanks for wactging man!! I actually have never touched a Sony camera or will probably ever lol so I can’t promise that vid!
Sweet as mate...love it !!!....rocking it 😎🤪
Thanks for all the comments brotha! I appreciate it so much!
Plus having A lens with IS helps handheld . Prob gonna cop a 35 1.8 oss for a6400 rig and a top handle . What else would I add for weight besides mounted battery ?
Yeah! Completely agree!
Thanks for watching man! Glad you agree!
@@DannyGevirtz This video actually inspired me to shoot a small dance video ill be shooting soon. Thanks!!
@@alexdruiventak8372 Man thats so awesome! I cant wait to check it out man. Good luck with it.
I way prefer handheld. Think also because the videos that require handheld are always more interesting, music videos, sport etc. As always sick video man!
Dude such a great point. haha sports and music videos are my favorite things to shoot so that makes a lot of sense. Thanks man.
Great work Danny boy!
Thank you so much man!
I think with the dji Rs2 you can Do hand held but also A gimbal thanks to the quick realese and locks mechanics...😊👍
I don't necessarily have the budget for a gimbal, I guess I'll be able to be good at handheld before I could even purchase a gimbal 😅
I do agree that handheld shots have a different vibe to it especially in some certain scenarios, it gives that perspective view rather than a smooth movement view.
Hey do you have a video of a breakdown of that whole rig setup?
I just shot an entire music video handheld with the c200 cuz - broke haha but I still need to go through the footy, hope it's not too shaky 🙈...love your videos btw!
Sean M. Thanks so much Sean!! I’m sure the video will turn out awesome!
@@DannyGevirtz update: checked out the footage... Blown away. I used a lens with IS. Can't wait to get this beauty online!
Didnt even watch the video yet but already hit the like button cause your content is so amazing. What's your top 5 films of all time?
RT
Hahah thanks dude! lemme know what you think after you watch too! Man thats tough. Shawshank Redemption, Moonlight, Whiplash, Friday Night Lights, Perks of Being a Wallflower
@@keenanmarshall6997 Lolol. That vid chat last night was sick
Hi, amazing video, i'm suscribed and always watch your content, it helps me a lot, recently i've got a rig for my sony a7iii, and i was thinking about the settings, because, we always use 24p, but, considering the 180° rule, how do you resolve that?, i mean, we still using that rule even handled? or we have to increase the shutter speed?, Thanks a lot again, and grettings from Chile.
Dude great content! You are seconds from blowing up on CZcams I swear
Haha thank you Johann!!!! Maybe one day, but just happy to have people like you around right now!
great content man! where can I find the boxing video? Lighting and shots look rad
Hey dude! Thank you! It was a part of a music video I shot. Check it out here czcams.com/video/OgKN_YY70Sk/video.html
great tips
Thanks! Glad it was helpful for you!!
I’ve been thinking about selling my Ronin S and putting that money towards a shoulder rig! This makes me want to do it now
VERY NICE BRO 🙏
Dope ass video dude!
Nemanja Trbojevic thanks so much bro! Appreciate you watching!
Great points! What's your opinion on using image stabilisation when shooting handheld? Do you prefer to use IS lenses or do you prefer the rawness of non stabilized glas?
Hey Martin! My sigma art 24-70 has IS. Its a very light and non intrusive stabilization so i love using it. But some lenses its too strong and it looks robotic. but if its very light I like to have it on.
Well produced video! +1 sub
Thank you Brandon! Happy to have you along for the ride man! Much appreciated!!
Haven’t even watched this yet but totally agree. Go Handheld 👍🏼
I want to abstain from using my gimbal as much as I do.
Need to build my rig up, nice & heavy!
Fuego AF for sure man! I’m a huge fan of the handheld. Gimbal work feels like a chore. Thanks for watching!
Amazing video
Thank you man!!! Appreciate that so much!
goood point
Glad you agree man!
Handheld is first and only love
Amen Josh. Makes life so much more fun.
Please tell what would you suggest for a very low height shots to minimize vibration or shaking when you have to put camera rig really low and hold it only with the top handle? I mean it may not be possible to use another hand, but just one. Thanks in advance!
Just adding a small 5 inch monitor and a battery along with cage and grip makes a more stable camera with 2 hands holding it vs. without anything cage at all or accessories. Totally get the extra weight seems smoother. Practicing the slow Ninja walk and the arm motions also help for smoother pans across or tilts up and down. I would recommend a monopod if you are standing for any length of time like 5 minutes of interview. However for short takes of less than a minute with camera in smooth motion, a monopod is not necessary.
