    TOP 10 INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT THE OROMO
    1. The Oromo are a Cushitic ethnic group native to the Oromia region of Ethiopia and parts of Northern Kenya in the Marsabit County, Isiolo County and Tana River County. They speak the Oromo language (also called Afaan Oromo), which is part of the Cushitic branch of the Afroasiatic language family.
    2. Genetics
    The origin of all Cushites is thought to be in southern Egypt and northern Sudan where they may have arisen through contact between proto-nilotes, Omotics from the Omo valley, Ancient Natufians who came into Egypt from the Levant and east African hunter gatherers. Their closest cousins are the Somali and Afar people. According to Y-DNA analysis by Hirbo 2,011, around 82.6% of Oromo in Kenya carry the paternal E1b1b haplogroup.
    3. Origins.
    According to oral history, the father of the Oromo people was Orma. The two sons of Orma, that is Borana and Barentu, gave rise to the two ethnic groups of the Oromo people. Barentu Oromo are found primarily in Ethiopia. The Borana Oromo live in southern Ethiopia and northern Kenya.
    Historical linguistics and comparative ethnology studies suggest that the Oromo people probably first settled around Lake Chew Bahir and Lake Chamo. They are a Cushitic people who have inhabited East Africa, specifically the area south and east of the Bale Mountains, since at least the early 1st millennium.
    4. Beautiful women
    Their faces are symmetrical, long and slim with wonderful eyebrows. Their complexion is a gorgeous caramel shade of melanin. Their smiles are enchanting and their movements are imbued with grace. When they smile, evidence of divine touch in their creation is clear. Many have long feminine hair and they proudly swish it in the air when they dance. Oromo ladies, like other Ethiopians are easily the most beautiful women on earth.
    5. Their influence on the Somali is visible through the Garre tribe of Somalis who speak a Borana influenced dialect of Somali. Here is a sample of Garre language. Many Somalis and Oromo’s look indistinguishable due to decades of gene flow as well as common Cushitic heritage. The Gabra people of Kenya are another Oromo speaking sub-tribe with a heavy Somali influence.
    6. According to the 2007 census 40 to 45 percent are Christian, 55 to 60 percent are Sunni and 3.3 percent follow the Ancient Oromo religion known as Waaqeffanna. Here is video of some Kenyan Oromo in church.
    7. Oromo's largely live in the more fertile Southern, Central and Western Ethiopia, there is less food insecurity and basic needs are not as difficult to acquire as they are for Habesha's or Somali's. The majority of the Oromo people are farmers. Almost 90% of them live in rural areas and work in agriculture.
    8. The Oromo people are known for their Gadaa system. It is a democratic highly developed system based on age-group with defined role system of governance in which a leader is elected for 8 years. It is one of the earliest examples of a fully developed democratic system.
    9. Oromo language is an Afroasiatic language that is written in the Latin alphabet and has very complicated phonology. More than 35% of Ethiopia's population are Oromo mother-tongue speakers, which makes it the most widely spoken primary language in Ethiopia.
    10. Even though they account for the biggest chunk of the population, they don’t have much political power in Ethiopia. For a long time, Oromo people have been persecuted and discriminated against for various reasons. There are documented human rights violations against the Oromo in Ethiopia under three successive regimes. Most of Oromo families had to change their names to Amhara to attend school.
    11. The Oromo Liberation Front is an Oromo nationalist political party formed in 1973 to promote self-determination for the Oromo people inhabiting today's Oromia Region and Oromia Zone in the Amhara Region of Ethiopia. The fundamental objective of the Oromo Liberation Movement is to gain self-determination for the Oromo people.
    12. Did you know, Between the 12th and 19th centuries, the Oromo had one of the strongest militaries in the Horn of Africa. The military was well organized because of a strong political and social structure called Gada, which helped ensure power sharing and order among the people.
    13. Lets talk about Oromo cuisine, shall we? The Oromos cuisine consists of various vegetable and meat side dishes and entrées. Pork is typically not in Oromo cuisine, as it's considered taboo for Orthodox and Muslim Oromos who make up over 90% of the population combined.
    14. While slaves were a stratum within the society, many Oromos, regardless of caste, were sold into slavery elsewhere. By the 19th century, Oromo slaves were sought after and a major part of slaves sold in Gondar and Gallabat slave markets at Ethiopia-Sudan border, as well as the Massawa and Tajura markets on the Red Sea.

    Oromo are the best nation, they are an Ethiopian nation with a vast untouched culture and attractive facts. Although my mother and father are from the Oromo nation, they have not inherited anything about their nation. Even though I and my sisters and my family belong to the Oromo nation, we were born and raised outside the Oromia region. We do not speak the language and do not know the culture. I hope that you speak Oromo. I am proud of the facts you present about the Oromo people. Please continue to do so. Thank you very much.

      India was never known as Abyssinia. In fact, Mahatma Ghandi was a racist who wrote an official letter to the British protesting the fact that, while Europeans segregated themselves to specially reserved areas and dwellings, Indian "coolies" were housed in the same quarters as "kafirs"! He found this highly insulting and intolerable.

      @@khalidburalle4000 brother that is completely wrong, Oromos have never claimed descent from Arabia. In fact, it is Somalis who claim descent from Arabia. 2 of the biggest clans, Darood and Isaaq, both claim descent from an Arab. But you will not find many, if any at all, that claim descent to Arabs. Oromos also kept in touch many of the cultures and traditions alongside that Somalis abandoned centuries ago when they were arabized almost 1000 years ago (with the advent of Islam). The Rendhille who split from the Somalis around 500-1000 years ago still maintain the cultures and traditions that Somalis lost including the age set tradition of Gadaa, although less sophisticated than that of the Oromo

    the assimilation part plus the slave trade part is absolutely a lie created by habesha elites to undermine oromo. The Oromo were strongest in east Africa how come one enslaved them? this thing is literally debunked long ago. There were never pure Oromo who got enslaved by others. most slaves in Abyssinia were not pure Oromo but other minority ethnicities who were sold as named 'galla' except a few Oromo children who got enslaved due to war. they all got Fred immediately upon arriving in Europe. secondly, there were barentu oromos in central Ethiopia before Boranas conquest of Abyssinia. the rest are all well-presented. something I recommend you for the next video is that AFAN OROMO is the language that most Egyptologists and anthropologists used to identify hyroghliphics and cuniform of ancient Mesopotamian language. thanks

      You made some great points here bro. First of all, amharas have spent much time teaching and broadcasting distorted history with the help of semiticist historians while holding a monopoly over primary sources other vital institutions. This paper does a good job at briefly describing this:
      "A history of modern Ethiopia: Review - Gebeyehu Temesgen Duressa & Gemechu Kenea Geleta"
      You're also right about the other points you made. I also want to mention that it wasn't just Barentu who were there but also Borana. For example, there are 13th centuries references taking about the Gaalaan and Yaayyaa gosa who are Borana. Oromo medieval history is still heavily understudied it's changing rapidly now. Though we did have our own highly sophisticated state and form of governance.

    • @NoRockinMansLand
      @NoRockinMansLand Před 3 měsíci +2

      Through Safuu (the Oromo moral value system) Oromos did assimilate other ethnic groups peacefully through naturalization and adoption practises like Moggaasaa and Guddifachaa.
      However, it has to be understood that this is greatly exaggerated for 2 reasons. First, the pastoral Oromo population, though smaller than Abyssinia, was not a small population. Second, most regions of Oromia (prior to the pastoral Oromo migration) were already inhabited by earlier Oromo sedentary/agro-pastoralist populations.
      Assimilation of ethnic groups was not exclusive to Oromos either. Somalis assimilated with pre-Islamic inhabitants of modern day Somaliland, Amharas assimilated Agaw/Tigray/Oromo/Omotic populations through expansion and assimilation into Abyssinia. Heck, even the Sabaeans assimilated with the native Agaw populations to create the habesha identity.

    • @THESURAFELB
      @THESURAFELB Před 3 dny

      They increased their numbers by forced assimilations by wiping out the male figures of other tribes and taking wives and children as war booties as they expanded and occupied most lands of current day Ethiopia. Prior to their expansion, the medieval period Ethiopia was weakened as a result of the conflicts between the Muslim Sultanates and Christian Kings. Thus, a primitive group of nomads from Northern Kenya found the opportunity to easily penetrate that nation and in the process incorporated the culture and lifestyles as is of every groups they assimilated. Therefore, none of them actually have anything in common today except language. Yes the original nomads from Kenya have intermingled with the indigenous tribes they swallowed but not extensively since the distinct features of their ancestries is still apparent.🔔

But later on they themselves were incorporated not wholly but to a degree into both Amgaras and Tigrayans.Get your damn facts straight. Oromos are the most notorious in the history of Ethiopia to forcefully assimilate others and nkt just then, even today they have that crazy dream of expanding and assimilating more. That is like Number 1 out of the entire horn with this habit of wanting something that you don't own.🔔The pastoral lands of Oromos existed in Kenya to begin with not Ethiopia..Ethiopia was already a well civilized nation before the Oromo migration with literally no pastoralist culture except the Afaris and even them had a Sultanate. It is unfortunate that we are singing the same colonial song that has separated our people for the last three centuries, remember divide and rule. If you think we are independent and deciding for ourselves, then you're in for a shocker. They are still colonizing us. One of the best tool of colonization today is to shape the narrative. They control everything from Media to written books. That's why we are discussing this topic of who the Oromo people are on this platform which happens to be theirs. If you happen not to know who certain people are, we would normally discourse under a tree. Don't tell me that's not been modern because it is. To cut the long story short if you believe Oromo and Somali to be cousins as the white man told you, sorry to say but you are lost and I should tell you they are indivisible brothers by blood. That's the truth no matter how much you deny and that is why I a somali who has never been where the Oromo language is spoken do still understand the meaning of this words you mentioned " Afaan Oromo" because it's also my language only difference of dialect. So come back and unite the people because that is the only way for us to reach prosperity which the white man hates to see.
