My dad had a 1971 Renault 8 automatic here in the UK. It would sometimes get stuck in 3rd at road junctions. Also I remember him saying that switch never seemed to work. Glad you got yours going. Brings back memories as a kid.

The function of the city hi way switch was simply to lower the downshift into first gear from 9 to 7 mph. Customers complained about the lurch on the earlier ones because the downshift into first at 9 seemed abrupt. Great that you got it running!

    Thanks for making these videos.
Watching it reminded me how easily steered the R-8/10 steers, and the awesome design of the front air vents that are SO adjustable.
Jealous of that "glove-box" on the dash high center !

I'm running a mercruiser boat alternator at the moment. Was cheap, and with a V belt pulley swap. It bolted right up.
The powder clutch draws 5 amps when working. With that, heat, and lights. The old generator would struggle.
Still on points, even has the original plug wires!

My dad was a renault dealer in Quebec when these were new. That little switch never came from the factory. These systems worked decently when new but in quebec winters we used to put engine oil in the gearbox because 7590 was to thick for the selector to work. q
There are brushes under the car between engine and transmission to activate and deactivate coupler. They require frequent replacement. Nb you can't take out and put back without cover . The cover was always sold with the new brush set.

Engine oil you say? Did he use just 40 weight?
Im starting to have problems right now, on the downshifts. At 50F 10C.
Its taking way too long to drop a gear. Then coast to the side of the road, and hope it makes a decision..
      Ill try engine oil.
In the first video of it, I destroyed my brush carrier. Was lucky to find a good used one. I had read the book, it claimed mine was a version that didn't need said brush holder tool. To be fair my old brushes were jammed full of grease-like a rock!

Where on earth did u find a used brush holder? The new brush set was always sold with the tool. It was only the cover upon which you attached a string so after putting holder in place you pulled out the tool. Yes we put I think even 30 weight motor oil for winter conditions.

My dad had a 1967 R10. His was a 4-speed, though. Incredibly soft seats.

If your Renault still has the origional Generator, and Points Ignition, then this is a rare, and ULTRA EMP-Proof car!

And one more thing...be sure to use only 75EP gear oil in the transmission. ATF is a no no, and heavier oils will cause delayed shifting in cold weather. Cool cars.

@@OddCars I saw your ad and searched YT to learn more about those cars, especially the automatic and then found your videos. Looks like you've done a lot to it. I'd like to have a Dacia 1300 (Renault R12)

@youtoobe169 Funny you say that. I nearly got a Skoda. That looked like this r10.
