    I've never had any interest in this product, but it has been a fascinating story in a slow-motion car crash kind of way, because there is a market for low-power devices. I wouldn't go so far to say this was a scam, but Tommy and anyone else connected with this thing was in way over their heads with the reality of mass production and mass marketing. Even making and marketing low-end hardware is a complicated, time-consuming and expensive venture with dozens of moving parts, and nothing Tommy Tallarico or anyone associated with this thing did or said ever demonstrated that they had the slightest clue what they were getting into. I'm sorry, but multiple rounds of crowd-funding and a "fake it till you make it" zeal does not make a sound business. And that was before anything about a pandemic or a chip shortage came into the picture. It's all over but the crying', this thing is dead.

    This is such a crazy story. If Intellivision just had of tried their best to release a system and admit defeat early, it could have been seen as valiant effort on their part and been given respect for trying to break into a really tough market. However, I also don't think anyone involved with the company deserves to be hated or called bad names. We all make mistakes and have the ability to grow. I dont know how you guys ( youtubers ) deal with all the keyboard warriors on the internet. Insufferable at times. I use to watch Electric Playground when I was a teenager and will always have fond memories of Tommy and Victor's reviews.

    Not to be a jerk but your totally wrong about what happened to THQ. I was there when we were restructuring / in bankruptcy and we had new funding lined up to sell the entirety of THQ to a new investor and we would have remained in business. The Bankruptcy Judge ruled against our plans and forced us to sell off our assets in order to recoup investor funds...which was dumb because we had many titles and franchises that were profitable / valuable if we were able to remain in business....forcing a fire sale devalued EVWRYTHING to the point that investors only received a fraction of their money. THQ did not have to go out of business, it was a court bankruptcy rulling. Jason Ruben was our CEO at the time and had an excellent plan to save the company with new investments...sadly that wasn't allows to happen.

    From what I understand, Intellivision never had access to the StartEngine funds as they had to wait until the campaign closed and reach at least $500k to get any money. I believe it was put into some kind of holding account (I recall someone saying the money went through the SEC themselves but I'm not sure how accurate that is). • @CrazyHomelessWeirdo
      @CrazyHomelessWeirdo Před 2 lety

      I always consider pre-order kind of risky because I don't want to end up in a position like the people of the amico where I'm pretty much losing my cash. I'd rather wait for the product to come out and buy it when it's relatively available. Especially with a lot of these smaller companies trying to generate revenue for new projects it seems like as risky as putting your money on the roulette table.
      Also being first in line for something is not always the best thing especially with new technology or new releases of technology because the first release of a system or any piece of hardware is going to have a chance to have the most bugs. So sometimes it's better to wait a while and get it after the system's been out and established and they've had time to figure out if there's going to be anything like a red ring of death issue or something like that with a new system or a piece of hardware.

      I agree. I don't have the full details on how StartEngine differs from Kickstarter but it seems the major one is that you're not just giving money you are also buying shares, i.e equity. If you're selling shares in a company knowing that a product that company is riding on will likely not ever be released, I think the SEC's ears start to perk up, because that sounds like fraud. Even with the risk inherent to investing, you can't lie to or withhold information from your shareholders. So yeah, I think the company is inches away from bankruptcy and just refunded the StartEngine money to keep themselves out of legal hot water.

    I would actually take the money and call bankruptcy. So they have less common sense then what I expected... Atleast this is positive for the investors.

It would make more sense take the money and get away with it (say you invested those 60k in a new video game [what you didn't] and cash out). Those people would believe Tommy anyways because he is they friend. Isn't this the Tommy's secret weapon anyways... Call everyone a friend who invested to benefit from them?

      @@CamaroSS-sy2ei Morality doesn't matter in a business. The only thing what matters is money and you can earn it in honesty or in scamming (you can only earn it in honesty if you run your company well, what Tommy didn't do). I think the people who invested aren't that bright, why would you invest in a console what plays smartphone looking games (no even smartphone games look and run better). The funny part is: even if those games costed 2 or 3 or 5 dollars how they should have before they rised the price, it would still be a rip off (considering that you can get similar games for free on smartphones or even on Steam sometimes). Now those smartphone looking games should cost 20-25 dollars... You can buy AAA well crafted experiences for that money sure not day 1... But still. Also everyone nowdays has a smartphone what has more capabilities beisdes some of those 2D retro consoles.
      How man of those retro 2D bad looking console must come out, before people realize that they will never be profitable...

      @@strohhuttv8848 I disagree that morality doesn’t matter in a business. Those businesses where morality DOESN’T matter don’t have leaders - they have sociopaths who happen to be in charge. They might survive for awhile despite themselves, but it’s only a matter of time until things catch up to them. In my opinion, businesses devoid of morality deserve to fail.

    Well, them returning the cash likely means the Amico was never a scam (not to mention that they had an actual console built). I know you’ve gotten this comment a gazillion times, but it just seems like the Amico was a great concept, but horribly mismanaged and run to the ground, which is rather tragic.

      By this logic nothing is a scam. The Coleco Chameleon was not a scam because Mike Kennedy _really_ wanted to make the console but he was inept. Or the famous Coolest Cooler thing, which was actually manufactured yet 20.000 people never got what they paid for. The problem is never the dream or the idea but when people answer with "Yes!" to the "But can you make this thing as promised(quality, quantitiy, timeline)?" question. That "Yes" is the scamming.
