Is it the Flu? or
It is COVID?

All 3 of these have overlapping symptoms. And COVID cases are already starting to increase in the US with the cold weather, which is just the beginning of the 2nd surge that everyone is talking about. COVID, flu, and common colds are all caused by viruses.
Mentioned Videos:
Airborne Transmission - • The TRUTH of How COVID...
Long Haulers COVID - • Long Term Effects of C...
Pulse Oximeter for COVID - • NEW Rapid Antigen Test...
Rapid Antigen Test for COVID - • NEW Rapid Antigen Test...
These tiny infectious agents can survive only by getting inside the cells of animals or humans. There are more than 200 different viruses that can cause the common cold. The most common viruses that cause common colds are rhinoviruses and different types of covid viruses. For example, COVID is caused by a specific type of covid called SARS-CoV-2. The specific virus that causes infection and how your body’s immune system responds to the virus determines the symptoms and severity of illness.
The main way that these viruses spread from person to person are through the tiny droplets that sick people propel when they cough, sneeze or talk. These droplets can fly six feet or more in the air, and they can spread the virus if they deposit on someone’s mouth or nose or they get inhaled into a person’s lungs. The novel covid, meaning SARS-CoV-2, is aerosolized and can travel up to 27 feet in aerosolized form. That is something I talk more about in a separate video Colborne transmission. With COVID, an infected person doesn’t need to show symptoms to spread the virus.
About 40% of viral transmission happens before infected people show symptoms. After people are infected, if they develop symptoms, it can be for several days or their illness duration. And about 1/3rd of people with COVID never develop symptoms. You're contagious with the common cold the entire time you have symptoms, but you’re most contagious right after you catch the infection before you have symptoms. You’re most contagious with the flu from the day before your symptoms start until about the fifth day of symptoms.
It’s important to stay home with any of these illnesses when you or your child is most infectious. Viruses also spread through physical contacts like kissing or shaking hands, or when a person touches a surface (like a desk or doorknob) that has accumulated droplets from a sick person and then touches their own eyes, mouth, or nose. Viruses can live on surfaces for hours to days, although how long they remain intact and infectious depends on the virus, the surface, and the environment.
COVID is a real wild card here. There can be no symptoms, or it can be similar to the common cold. Or it can be similar to the flu. But it can also cause loss of smell, so that is somewhat of a unique symptom. And it becomes concerning when people develop shortness of breath, which is a result of pneumonia developing. So although both flu and COVID can cause pneumonia, COVID is more likely to do so.
With COVID, it can take anywhere from two to 14 days after exposure to the virus for symptoms to appear. On average, it's 5 days. And that is if people do develop symptoms. Another unique aspect of COVID is that symptoms can start out mild or even improve temporarily and worsen. Some people continue to have fatigue and other symptoms for months after their infection, the so-called “long haulers.”
Why do some people get so sick with COVID? With COVID, the death rate ranges from 10% to 27% in people ages 85 and older but is less than 1% in those ages 54 and younger. One reason for this disparity may be differences in the aging immune system.

Those of us with allergies have many of those same symptoms.
Ditto kiddo! Every year for me in March
Ann Rose Itchy eyes and steady stream of sneezing lately are signs a allergies. Blessed so far that I haven’t had a cold since retiring over 3 years ago! Not being around coworkers or traveling on public transportation helps. Continuing to wear masks and social distancing helps.
@@janicenightlinger7967 I have suffered allergies for 65 years, And my Experience, Dr. visits, and study show me that symptoms of allergies can be much more than just those 2 symptoms! Of course, I know how to handle them.
@@traceyprice359 Of course. I have many years of experience with this, so I don't want everyone to panic when they see, or experience allergic symptoms, thinking it has to be Covid.
@@traceyprice359 Chemicals are a major contributor to allergies and/or immune weaknesses that can lead to infections.
Every "Cold" I've ever had, caused loss of taste and smell.
Same here, so it can be really difficult to know whether it is a common cold or if it's this strain of covid.
Idk it's a first for me so i think i got covid 19 lmao i thought it was a normal flu but i lost my smell and taste so i don't know what it is ughhh
@@criticalhard get tested and play it safe
With covid its different. When i had a cold, mucus caused my loss of taste and smell. Like, your nose is so congested that u cant smell. But when i had covid19, it was like my ability to smell was just gone... And i wasn't even contested!
@@kimakigoddenae9789 Yeah that's what I'm experiencing rn, my nose is 90% normal now but I can't smell or taste, this is ridiculous.
I love how you've opened this 300k+ down the road. It's really all about the knowledge and sharing for you. Right on brotha
and throw in allergies,,,,, ugh
Me two I’m moving to the beach
YESSSSS, sneezing and congestion and not knowing if its allergies mild cold or what the heck, scaring the beejeezus outta me
@@MrsJMo-rp1vx Generally, antihistamines work well against allergies (if you have ones that worked before, try them now) but do little or nothing for the infectious maladies. Oh - taking Benadryl when you have the flu is likely to put you in bed for a few hours.
For me, colds usually produce a characteristic sensation in my soft palate while flu turns on the fever right away. Allergies (AFAIK) do not produce fever at all.
Be aware we can have tow or more of these bad things at one time.
with allergies, you don't get fatigue or malaise, just a stuffy nose and a sneeze usually

Dr Hansen, congratulations on 100,000 subscribers. Yes, it looks great right there behind your sofa, on the shelf. Perfect color too! I want to also thank you for educating people about their lungs and conditions/diseases that can harm them. Very valuable information. This video was excellent as I had questions that you answered. I'm 68 and positive. I live in a nursing home in PA. THE staff love us and are taking great care of us. I got the flu shot early and my virus symptoms are like a cold but some musus. Did my flu shot lessen my symptoms and I also take Lasarton.(sorry spelling) I'm so blessed. I swear I woke up feeling something wrong. Nurses came gave me the 15 min.test and the rest is history. This world desperately needs more human beings like you, Dr. Mike!!!!
For those of you confused about the loss of taste and smell with a cold, heres the difference. I had covid19 about two months ago. With a cold it feels like you lose your loss of smell from congestion and loss of smell can effect your sense of taste. With covid, my sense of smell was just gone. I had no nasal congestion at all. It was strange.
Did it ever come back? I have exactly that and I’m at one week. It feels like it’s never going to come back. Ever.
Dr. Hansen you are awesome! It’s like being in a seminar or lecture, I learn so much and I appreciate your time . I want to thank you for all you do, all physicians , medical staff, hospital employees, you are the true Heroes! 😩

How are people catching the cold virus if they're wearing masks and social distancing?
If you are still getting colds and flu, then you are doing something wrong. All RV's should go down if you are acting appropriately.
If you live in the same house as kids, sorry, a mask ain’t gonna save you. I am very good at wearing a mask, outside of my house that is. Still got hit with a nasty cold this week. This video was also very reassuring to me as my main symptoms have been sneezing, occasional cough and congestion/runny nose. I wonder if Dr. Mike has a percentage of false positives for Covid testing because that is also a big concern. I opted to get tested but now I’m feeling pretty confident it’s just a cold. 🤷🏼♀️ Will find out tomorrow.
Been dealing with a cold this past week too...ugh
@@tctc1500 The only 100% guaranteed way to not get a respiratory virus is if you either live in a plastic bubble or alone on a deserted Island out in the middle of the ocean. I likely caught my cold from my Dad. He was asymptomatic when I went out to visit him a week ago and when people are asymptomatic they can spread illnesses.
