John, this is a great, great Neil Young album. Love the contrast between the two sides. I personally prefer the acoustic tracks, particularly Thrasher, but all are masterpieces. Powderfinger as well, what a track! Really good review as always and I Iook forward to your take on Tonight's the Night. Take care.
This is a great album. Powderfinger is definitely a great track. I picked this album up at a local record store over the weekend for $20, and I am glad I found it. This is the first Neil Young album I got on CD back in 2001, and is also the first Neil Young album I bought on vinyl!
A meat and potatoes record there, John, no peanut butter and jelly sandwiches with this album. A superb record and a superb review. Keep them both coming.
I knew several people who saw Neil Young on his 78' tour which debuted the songs on "Rust Never Sleeps" (I have no explanation as to why I was not there). Everybody was expecting it to reflect the mellower "Comes A Time" LP, which actually was the current album at that time. People were surprised with his shorter length haircut, but even more so by the loudness of the second half of the show - my sister who was a big fan, said that she just couldn't take it - it was so deafening and distorted, and a couple of other friends reported the same thing, although all of them at that point were normally accustomed to loud rock concerts...But all agreed that the earlier acoustic set was superb, it was just the later part that got out of hand.. That all being said, "Rust Never Sleeps" is one of my favorite Neil Young albums, maybe my number one favorite - and I'm still kicking myself for not being part of that experience...Nice review John, as always..
Great selection of Neil Young LP's, his 70s albums take some beating as do a lot of his later stuff, love this album, looking forward to more Neil reviews.Agree with your opinion of the burn out lyric.
John: awesome review of perhaps THE definitive Neil Young record with iconic lyrics and perfectly crafted arrangements to make it one of my personal faves of his 70s era (along with Comes A Time and Zuma.) Acoustic side is fantastic electric side with Crazy Horse is rocking. Can’t do without as far as Neil in ANY vinyl collection
Probably one of his best albums because we can hear all his talents: acoustic and electric. For people who don't know him, perhaps it's better to begin with "Live Rust" because thre are almost all his standard songs of the end of the sixties and the seventies. But the electric part is really raw, I have read somewhere that even musicians couldn't hear what that they played. So I can imagine how could be impressive the contrast for the audience between the two parts.
Hello John and a happy 2018 to you....I love love love love Neil....he is my soulmate he just doesn’t know it heehee....I need the “on the beach” on vinyl.....I really like live at Massey Hall and also Cellar Door....just Neil and an acoustic is so soothing (to me anyway)...hmmm interesting take by Lennon, another person I admire but I don’t agree this go around....I picked up Hitchhiker on vinyl I think it’s a great listen all in one take I believe. Absolutely love Neil but haven't picked up any of his new stuff since Psychedelic Pill as reviews have been mixed and it kinda feels like he is rushing stuff out. Do you have of the newer albums John and are any worth getting? I'm still picking up the Archive Series stuff such as Hitchhiker which is great and I don't think he will ever better his 60's/70's output.
Amazing album, not a bad track on it. You said that powderfinger was 1977, i read somewhere that he offered the song to lynyrd skynyrd but they declined it, saying it didn't suit them, i love skynyrd, but would tend to agree with that, nobody could have done it better than Neil. 🏴🏴
If you go to the online music store "Pono Music" (the brainchild of Neil Young) you can purchase this album and all his other early albums in 24bit/192kHz resolution. They sound great. Pity there's no digital booklets with them which is a shame.
very nice Review,yes was a very good lp of 1979,not on the level of end of 60s early 70s of him,everybody knows this is nowhere 1969,after the gold rush 1970,harvest 1972...,but for sure was very nice

"Live Rust" the double LP is the better option.
Please review more Neil Young. This is album is great. My favourite is probably On the Beach or Deja Vu from CSNY.
