So we have unlimited money for war but no money for education? Even though tons of less economically powerful countries have been doing it for decades? If the gov paid for college especially trade schools they would make that money back in 2 or 3 years through higher taxes and then profit in the long run. I agree that more people should be going to trade schools, but if the gov't pays for it, then it basically becomes a government subsidy. Then the institutions will raise the tuition cost because more people can "afford" to pay it.

What to cut from the federal budget to pay for social services? The military budget, the tax cuts for the rich and their corporations. We can also increase taxes on corporations and the wealthy, including penny taxes on high frequency wall street trading. Lastly, single-payer Medicare for all is cheaper than what we're paying now.

You want to cut the military so Russia and China can expand without interference.
You want to strip all incentives for innovation by killing big business.
You somehow think that everybody getting free health care would save us money.
Have you seen the health problems this country has? Now imagine if health care is free. You think people will care if they eat another piece of pie? They will look at that as incentive to eat more.
You're like a child that doesn't understand what a budget is. You also don't understand that actions have consequences. Tax the rich and they will leave. They will take their jobs and innovations elsewhere. Force doctors to work for the government and watch the best, the ones that deserve to be paid the most, leave.
You want to strip the brains from this country all because you want something for free.

What you should be asking is how do we pay for the tax breaks for millionaires, billionaires and multi-billion dollar corporation's tax breaks and extra $ for the Military Complex or all the $ spent on Foreign Assistance, etc.?? What's needed is higher taxes on corporations and the richest citizens. Lower the rates but put an end to all the loopholes and write-offs. I never could understand how/why a tax break should be allowed for a company buying and building another building, such as a warehouse etc. It's their business. If I want a garage for my house, I could see me or any private citizen getting a tax break by spreading the expense over a few years but I can't say the same for a company. Save money or borrow it. No tax breaks. The country needs the revenue for the infrastructure that many of the businesses in the country need & use. So, it makes sense that they help pay for these things. They get enough of a break. If companies balk and try and hold us hostage by moving then we tell them - you move out thus taking jobs away then you cannot/will not be allowed to do business in America for 10 years.

    Catherine Rampell,
Let me explain single payer so you can understand:
Instead of insurance, you pay a monthly fee into a budget that will pay for your healthcare.
It is cheaper than what you have now, because:
    Current model:
Healthcare cost + insane amount of profit for insurance companies = some people have access to healthcare
    Single payer model:
Healthcare cost + 0 profit made on people suffering = all (working*) people have access to healthcare
*in some countries only students and working people are covered, in others everyone - you work it out

Thanks. I`ve been watching the US news for a while now, and what I learnt is that you just can`t afford to be poor.
What is being done to you is nothing short of chilling. The insane propaganda you suffer over there is out of this world. Pretty much all the developed world has universal healthcare. It is not free. You pay for it. Everyone pays for it, it is not voluntary. And nobody complains about it, because every sane person knows that you need it. Just checked my payslip for you. A little less than 10% of my total gross pay goes to National Insurance. Last month that was $278. For that I have pretty much everything, but dental care and medication. That includes visits to health clinics, preventive care, ambulances, treatments, surgeries, you name it. So if I went to a concert and got shot, treatment would not cost me anything, if I were to break my leg, ambulance would be free, if I had cancer I would not go bankrupt. I remember Bill O`Rielly saying a few years ago that he had been to the UK and people's teeth are falling out, and not long ago somebody said that in Italy, cardboard is used for a cast. Ridiculous. (Fox TV also said that there are no go zones in Paris and London, and Birmingham is populated by Muslims only - been to or lived in all 3 cities, none of it is true.)
When people were shot in Las Vegas, their treatment was estimated to be around $90 thousand. Some of them were young and thought they did not need health insurance. Then comes charity, go fund me, or life crippling debt. Is that a way to live? It should be on the news all the time. Instead we watch well paid political pundits vomiting lies all day on TV thinking I have made it, so I must have worked really hard and everybody else is a lazy bum or they could have done it, too, so when their family member get cancer, they can just sell their house or die. Insane.
They say they believe in free market, but they protect their pharmaceutical companies like a mother tiger.
Why does a Daraprim tablet cost $750 that Sydney high schoolers cooked for $2?
      qz.com/851416/why-martin-shkreli-and-turings-daraprim-still-costs-750-in-the-us-when-australian-schoolkids-can-make-it-for-2/

You just start pulling down on the qualification age for Medicare. The Program is already in place. Reduction in our private pocket money will offset any meager increase in tax. The People in Germany, Japan, France and UK NEVER have to think about getting Healthcare. Americans think about Healthcare inflation, copays, deductibles etc many days and every single year. Even the most critical study of Bernie's M4A plan showed it would save $2 trillion over 10 years, and everyone would get healthcare coverage. Saying the math doesn't make sense is blatantly wrong. And there's other things we could do to make healthcare more affordable, like weakening patents on life saving drugs, and allowing more people to become doctors

He has also created a couple highly successful businesses and founded the The New England Salem Children's Village which he and his wife eventually expanded to relief programs serving around the globe. Oh, and in his spare time he has written/co-authored over 20 books (some best sellers) as well as appearing on television shows and movies.

Thanks Thom Hartmann for standing up for women`s rights and "the right to choose". It is (should be) a Human Right to have control over your own body = own destiny/life. Also, nobody who is against abortion can be against CONTRACEPTIVES without admitting that they are against women`s rights altogether. People who are against contraceptives want to force women back into their "traditional" place as second class citizens who`s sole role is to be wives and mothers.
It was modern contraceptives that freed women to have choices and to live a free life outside the house. It was contraceptives that gave women the opportunity to learn/study, get a good job of their choosing etc. Without them, women are slaves to their biology. People who are against abortions AND also contraceptives are well aware of that. THEY are no fools. WE are fools if we are not able to see through their "pro life" mirage.

That opinion editorialist works for Bezos and in order to keep her job, must belittle populism and make false equivalencies between nationalism and socialism in order to maintain the status quo.
Funny how even Michael Moore didn't mention the Mercatus (sp?) study in support of the bill and the politicians championing it. That study tried it's damnedest to say that the savings over a decade would be negligible. They failed. Medicare for All does work, worldwide. We just have to sacrifice the private insurers and make them productive instead of extractive.

    2) The GOP spends insane amounts of money on ridiculous military products/contracts that we don't need, gives insane amounts of corporate welfare, and never feels the need to justify the math that obviously adds to our deficit;
    3) We already have tons of solid research concluding that the US wastes more money on healthcare than other developed nations and the system remains crap, unfair, and leaves people uninsured; and
    4) Bernie would have the SENSE to hire competent, intelligent economists/advisors at the top of their fields who WOULD know how to work out the details.

The Middle Class is disappearing because couples are getting divorced is the second most stupid statement I’ve heard this week, the first one being storms are wet.
The main reason the middle class is disappearing is because big companies keep getting bigger, they are selling everyday necessities to the whole population and its impossible competing with them, local hardware stores, pharmacies, super markets, whatever it is now it is owned by the same company nationwide, how could there ever be a middle class in this situation, you can’t compete with them so you must work for them, and the reward ? A lousy wage that only helps to survive without having hope of ever reaching the long forgotten middle class legend.
As long as companies can grow without a limit, as long as the can be worth whatever they can achieve, the only outcome eventually will be that only 10 companies will exists and they will own everything purchasable, the only way of making this world a place were the economy of all the individuals is more balanced is by putting a cap on how much revenue a company of any sort can make, and after reaching this cap they cannot grow any bigger. Unless this happens we are doomed for failure in the long run, which sadly is not that long.

      @erickacereto Před 5 lety

Come on Mr. My Rat, are just trolling ? Why are you lobbying in favor of our current situation ? Are you getting paid ?
Cause what im saying is pretty obvious, imagine that the cap for any company is 100 million dollars a year, the owner of any company with a 100 million dollar cap would have a pretty lavish lifestyle. and if this was the case Walmart would be forced to have and X amount of stores and that gives field to other people to own supermaket chains and when they reach that 100 million cap they stop growing, same thing for Home depot, fedex, walgreens, costco, amazon, coca-cola, you name it, Pepsi Co owns so many companies its not even funny.
If there were a cap there would be so many regional stores which would pay better wages, there would be more suppliers of the products you see in any type of store, money would spread out to more people, more families would have a better life style and democracy would be more effective.

I know a few in New York City who told me it was free when they were college age (just like it was for Bernie, Hillary and Trump if they'd needed it instead of a private college or University) Tax incentives can always offset some of these costs. Corporations like Microsoft for example can provide computers. My son's elementary school had free video game systems available for the children in Harlem. It's a matter of political will and priorities. We've slipped so far down the ladder in terms of education compared to the rest of the world, we need to catch up to stay competitive globally!

Katherine Rampell is 100% wrong on both messaging and policy. When you run on the kind of messaging she would advocate, a sort of centrist pragmatism, you will lose. She's also wrong about the policy, take Medicare for all, that is a serious policy.. It's a legitimate system that works in the majority of similarly economically developed countries. What we CAN'T afford to do is keep the same system we have now. It's already THE MOST expensive system per capita in the world. You know when you won't be able to do that? While you let Republicans cut taxes and inflate the defense budget for another 6+ years because you have no f'ing clue how to win an election. (See the last decade of Democrats losing 1000+ seats across the board)

Isn't it obvious that removing insurance companies would make the whole system cheaper by exactly the amount of insurance company profits? In what way is that not cheaper?

Bill, did you know that T. Carlson has Swedish ancestries. One of his ancestors was famous for inventing the toilet seat. Wait a minute, it took a Norwegian to put the hole in it

I've always despised PJ O'Rourke. First, because he's not funny. And second, he has no serious ideas at all.

I read it when I worked in a bookstore in the 90s. I thought the humor was really adolescent and didn't even rise to the level of wit (no offense).

I wish Bill would stop having PJ O'Rourke on the show. Most of what O'Rourke says is anti-intellectual and unfunny. I can't stand listening to him.

It's a fascinating look at current Republicans who can't make a serious point about any issue, so resort to joking around the whole time as their distraction for having nothing of substance to say.

Catherine is a beast! There is no one on television like her. She is intensely intelligent and really understands economics. She shreds Stephen Moore on the regular! She is awesome!

I have to disagree. She clearly has not read Bernie's healthcare plan. United States is already spending almost twice as much per person as the next highest spending developed Nation.
Before obamacare, it was unknown exactly what the profit percentage was for healthcare insurance companies. The reason for that is a bill passed in 1946 called the McCarran Ferguson act which prevented the national government for regulating the insurance industry. This law was passed immediately after the first successful antitrust lawsuit against a group of insurance companies was validated by the US supreme Court.
Obamacare limits the "overhead" that medical insurance companies can charge to about 38%. Contrast that to switzerland. And Switzerland all the insurance is private: there is no government owned insurance. New paragraph but since Switzerland does not have a McCarran Ferguson act, the government is able to limit insurance industry overhead to 8%.
In an interview with one of Switzerland's two largest health insurance companies, the American interviewer asked the Swiss healthcare executive if it bothered him to have his profit margin limited to 8%. The Swiss executive started laughing. He asked,
"In what other in what other industry am I guaranteed any profit at all?"
The television series was called sick around the world.

Great show! Though I will never understand why the show is produced the way it is.
Why would you have Michael Moore on for a few minutes at the beginning, and a few minutes at the end?
    This just makes no sense...

TheHua89 I think they probably offered him a spot on the debate panel (he’s been on the panels in the past I seem to recall) and he politely refused for whatever reason. But really, Michael Moore is a filmmaker more than a public policy wonk so I doubt he’d have added too much to the debate. He’s one of the show’s big-name guests who came to hawk their book or movie or TV show or album.
