STOP saying LAY DOWN (unless you're talking about the past)

  • This video explains how to use LIE and LAY correctly in English as well as the difference between LIE and LIE DOWN.

    There's a youtuber who said this: In today's modern Englisg, in America we USE "lay" instead of "lie" many times..." lay in bed". Actually there are some songs in which they use LAY instead of LIE: " I want to lay with you in the sea" (Song: truly, madly, deeply). Great video, Mike.

      Yes. Some people learn them incorrectly. That does not make them right.

      In this case, I would probably use "on my bed". "In bed" usually means that you are asleep, resting, sick, or not going anywhere anytime soon.

      This is very interesting for me because I wrote down "lay" correctly in my spiral-bound notebook. I have no idea how it changed to "laid" by the time I wrote down here. 😲😆

    So the verb LAY always needs an object but the verb LIE does not need an object ?
    And the three forms are really hard to remember! But after writing some examples with them , it will be easier.😊🎉🎉🎉❤❤

      With "lay", you are almost always going to have two objects. For example, "I'm going to lay my laundry nicely on my bed."

    She laid the baby in his cot. Don't bother your dad, he is lying in his bed after a hard day of work. Clear explanation, Teacher evnthoug the tow words are easy to confuse..

    It is incredibly embarrassing that Americans need to be taught this basic concept despite being supposedly "native" speakers and having gone to school for so many years 🤦🏻‍♂. Moreover, that many songs and Hollywood movies/shows have scripts written with this mistake, and it passes through all the people and makes it to the final production! And to think that they're people in the comments defending the misuse!

    On the other hand, "lie" can also mean to make a false statement with the intent to deceive.
    "Telling lies can damage trust in relationships."🥹
