    In 1912, Abdu’l Baha, son of the founder of the Baha’i Faith and its leader from 1892 to 1921, became one of the first Iranians to visit Stanford University and address the entire student body and faculty. A little more than a century later, this conference revisits and analyzes the important event at Stanford. This event was organized on June 4, 2023.
    Dominic Brookshaw, Abbas Milani, Negar Mottahedeh, Robert Stockman, Shane Tedjarati, Richard Thomas, and Mina Yazdani discuss topics including Abdu’l Baha’s views on women's education, anti-racism, peace, modernity, the place of science in social discourse, and the need to engage with universities (some of which were addressed in his talk at Stanford).

    Thank you to Mr Milani for all his kind service and a beautiful presentation!! It was so heartening to hear acknowledgement of Mr Khademi as he worked closely with my father at Iran Air as my father was Chief Inspector and travelled with Shah. Also Dr Ayadi was a Baha’i and Shah’s personal physician. Mr Amanat was of course the architect of the infamous monument Shahyad in Tehran and now called Azadi Tower. Also General Shuallah Alai who served as treasurer at Ministry of Justice.

    We must be aware and share this knowledge that Abdul Baha despite all the obstacles and bad conditions never stop to work for peace, for deep changes in the medieval islam and wrote a constitution and so many texts for establishing peace in the world. We must aknowlege his extraordinary gift to the world and peace.

    On the question near the end about Baha'is/Abdu'l-Baha and choosing venues with economic consequences, there are many but mostly told secondarily. A primary mention would be such and such a meeting happened at x but no comment about not being held and y. This would be buried in history, more to be uncovered and told.
    Speaking to NC Baha'i history, for example, the first state conferences which then became the seasonal schools, were held at a white-owned establishment but there was tension of blacks attended and eventually the Baha'is moved it elsewhere and eventually even to holding it in union with the South Carolina community at an explicitly black institution. But even at the white institution a story was recently told by an attendee of those early meetings at a conference in Durham that she co-lead a youth group descending the mountain to go to dinner and the first place refused to serve her as a black attendee and the youth group quickly decided on signal to stand up in unison and leave. They tried the next establishment and they welcomed all and earned their dollars.
    There are many cases of Baha'i events being held at HBCUs in many places, state conferences and conventions. Look for them.

      @@seifazghandi1228 The whole point of my comment is that there would be an array of answers. An event happened at one location("x"). That's moderately easy to document perhaps. But that that event didn't happen at another location("y") is an entirely different thing to try and document. Who knows why? And multiple people could have multiple perspectives on why, and what are the consequences for such choices? Who get's to measure those consequences? What one person measures and says is important to another may be less so to another.
      I'm saying there are such but finding them requires a much deeper dive. They are not the primary points of documentation but one finds occasional mentions now and then.
      One consideration is that one could be trying to measure sociological or economic power. But perhaps to others this matters not at all. There are other variations, I'm sure. How does this fit the Baha'i goal of unity? That's a broad question with many stakes in the question.

    The Baha’i Faith is an off-shoot of Islam whether the Baha'ee people would like this fact or not. It's much better than Taliban's Islam or Shiat Islam of Khomeini & Co. and of course better than ISIS (Da'esh) Islam, but still is another version of Islam even though the Baha'ees would try to escape that truth. The lady on that Chicago elevator told Abbas Meelawny that he was not smart enough to know that he was actually a Baha’ee, I would suggest that both the lady and Abbassagha were not smart enough to be an atheist after they divorced the Islam.

      The Bahá'í Faith is an offshoot of Islam in the same way Christianity is an offshoot of Judaism and Buddhism is an offshoot of Hinduism. True religion comes in stages, just as all life does, from God. We aren't born into this world as full-grown adults, we start as babies and grow from there. Humanity didn't start out with a full understanding of God and His purpose for us. We matured and became able to understand more and more as time went on. Hence God sent more Messengers and not just to the East. Do you have a problem with this? Seems quite logical to me.
      Bahá'ís have our own Prophets, our own Holy Books, our own calendar (solar not lunar), and we have our own Holy Days, our own laws, and our own form of administration without clergy. Holy war is forbidden in Bahá'u'lláh's writings as well as slavery. These are teachings for a maturing human race. I hope one day you'll appreciate what has been given to humanity in this new Day of God.

    Baha'i Faith has interesting ideas, but this subject seems more fit for some theological seminar or religious studies department. Abdu'l-Baha wasn't promoting anything in regards to women, for example, that the major socialist or Marxist thinkers of the period were not already saying, including their predictions that the capitalist powers would eventually get into a big world war. As for the persecution of Baha'is in Iran, that should totally be condemned just out of simple human decency.

      @@parsaparsaee6097 I don't doubt he is interesting, but the moment you claim someone is a messenger from God or some other supernatural entity, then you're talking about theology or religion, not political science or evidence-based history. You cannot teach a history class claiming Jesus was literally the son of God.

    • @wendyscott8425
      @wendyscott8425 Před 6 měsíci

      @@lawrencekagan8688 I'm not sure what you're trying to get at here, but you seem to be under a few misconceptions. 'Abdu'l-Bahá was the son of the Prophet-Founder of the Bahá'í Faith, not a prophet himself, as he continually had to remind people given so many thought he was a prophet.
      Religion plays a huge role in how people think about things. To ignore it is to leave out a lot of information when discussing the kinds of social teachings 'Abdu'l-Bahá spoke about. This wasn't a history class, btw, and his talk wasn't a history class either. What does Jesus have to do with this, other than the fact that Bahá'ís also believe He was a Manifestation of God?
      'Abdu'l-Bahá accomplished something no previous religion had accomplished. He kept the Faith from splitting apart after the passing of its Founder, Bahá'u'lláh. Considering how many sects the earlier religions have split into, you have to consider that pretty remarkable, to say the least. The Bahá'í Faith is still united. Last spring, Bahá'ís from around the world gathered to elect our 9-member Universal House of Justice. It was a beautiful sight to see men and women from every conceivable background coming together in unity that way. I doubt this would have happened without 'Abdu'l-Bahá.

  • @KylieKingston
    @KylieKingston Před 2 měsíci

    Baha'i faith is not that progressive. You can't get married unless your parents give their approval. I've seen lots of Persian Bahai'is suffer because their parents don't like that the other person is working class or the other typical things rich Persians are prejudiced about. It still has lots of leftovers of Middle Eastern patriarchal structures, not to mention their views towards LGBTQ people.
