    5:37 Thank you! Finally somebody said it. I've seen as much bedding videos as I can on CZcams, and they all bed at least 1 inch after the recoil lug, touching the barrel.
    When I asked the rationale, and commented it contradicts free floating, no one could answer me.

    Shilen (through Northland Shooters Supply) sold another barrel last week because of this video right here. I bought mine almost identical to your .243AI except I went with 6.5CR chamber. Only because I already have 6.5CR brass and dies. Shilen is do a lot of bussiness right now and is backlogged a ways. I did want mine in 26" length but all they had available was 28" so we'll give it a try and I can always shorten a little if I think its an issue. I am really looking forward to giving those ratchet riflings a try.

    The reason they do .266 is less brass hardening. You should go with it. You'll also get better bullet alignment and accuracy.

    If you are strapped for cash savage is the way to go. My first 3 bolt guns were savages. A 110 in 308 for target, I've shot through 3 factory barrels on that gun in over a decade. A 110 in 223 for coyote. And a 111 in 300win mag for elk bear and mule deer. Fantastic guns that I don't have to worry about beating the piss out of. I'd recommend them to anybody. If you have the money spend an extra 4 or 500 and get a bergara. Just don't skimp on glass

    Made the plunge into the Ackley world my self with a 223 AI. It is a laser out to 600 with 75 gr and 80 gr Amax. On a Stevens 200 none the less.

      I just picked up an AR chambered in the 6.8 SPC but I'm thinking about buying another upper in 223. I was thinking the .223 AI would be awesome. I need to find out if they cycle in that AR platform or not. The ballistics on the 223 AI are fantastic looking.

      @JReed305 Před 7 lety +1

      I haven't seen anyone have a lot of luck with it in an AR. Not much taper to the case. But I bet some one has gotten it to work.

    I think the rumors about the savage actions are from years and years ago. The new ones are perfectly fine.

    • @vaughnprecision
      @vaughnprecision  Před 7 lety

      I've had great luck using them. I even have some older actions that are good to.

    Im thinking about trying 6mm SUPER LR---- i have a ton of .243 brass. This has been a very cool build. 🇺🇸

    Cool choice on an AI version of the 243. Glad to see you didn't jump on the 6mm Creedmoor bandwagon. You mirror my sentiments exactly about Savage actions being the right choice for the guy who wants to do his own smith work and doesn't have the means or money to deal with Remmy's and machining. Being a 1:8 twist I'm asumming your gonna want the 95 to 105 grainers right?

    • @vaughnprecision
      @vaughnprecision  Před 7 lety

      Chad Harzbarger I'm looking to shoot 95 and 105 plus the 108

    I have a Savage 12 BV SS in 22-250 that shoots in the high 2's straight out of the box using hand loads.

    Mysteries, ratcheted barrel 3 groove barrels,wish I knew this data. Exciting!.thanks for your research!You thinking about any gain twist,say maybe 12-9 ?

    I'm planning on building a .243 AI for a comp gun. I'm looking into Shillen or Hart barrels. I was pretty excited to see that you had already done it and I just want your opinion on the .243 AI for a comp gun. I wasn't sure on twist, I want to shoot the highest bc builders I can find so I was thinking 1 in 8 would be fine. What are you doing for accuracy out to 300 yards?

      Hope it turns out..!! I suspect it will be fine. It's going to be a process for sure. Lots of learning for me to. Thanks for watching

    do you have any cant on that scope base? I have the 4 - 40 uhd and I have 40 moa cant and I am .5 mrad away from being able to zero at 100 yards... just wondering if you had the same problem. I would rather not have to go to 20moa base if I don't have to. I want to be able to max this 6.5 out..

    Thank you for doing this. I have a savage 110 project waiting on me. Original rifle is 25-06 purchased 25ish years ago. Does anyone know if I can convert to 7mm-08 even w long action and long internal mag? I’d like to put the bullet close to the lands without bullet length restriction. Shilen, criterion or proof research are my considerations. I want to be able to use a 20-22” barrel. I’d like ridiculous accuracy w 120-150gr bullets. Also. Is conversion from a blind mag to detachable box mag a possibility with an old savage 110.

    I have been thinking about doing this to my 10/110 .243. I’m curious if this build stands up to time? I bought my kid a take off barrel for his 6.5 creedmoor, northland has a light varmint that’s longer and has a threaded muzzle.. anyway that can of worms has me thinking about doing this.. the bullets out now has me wanting a faster twist in that 243

    you wont be sorry I have 3 234 IA' s between me and my kids plus a 280 AI I would ackley improve my bb gun if I could lol

  • @vfrav8r
    @vfrav8r Před 4 lety

    I've been watching the series, and found you like to throw parts, labor, camera and action at at a rifle resulting in good accuracy. However, you can get, good accuracy, out of a factory inexpensive rifle too. My 12FV .223 will do the same as yours. My stock bends like butter and floats like a bee. Stiff stocks are for heavy weight calibers. Anyone can shoot a 243 well..wondering what the point of the series is??

  • @haydenhass9382
    @haydenhass9382 Před 6 lety

    hey love the build, I know I am a little late. I have a question though, I have a savage 110 long action in 7mm mag and its seems to be wore out. what caliber would be a good one to switch to for long rang precision.(keep in mind I want to keep same bolt and same action) TIA.

    Where did you get this barrel for 319? On Shilens website they have the Savage drop ins listed as 374.

    • @vaughnprecision
      @vaughnprecision  Před 7 lety

      3631TACTICAL I bought it directly from them, I suspect the full bull barrels are cheaper because they don't have to contour it.

      Vaughn Precision Thanks for the info and fast response. Good videos too.

      @62chevrolet Před 6 lety

      3631TACTICAL I have had good luck at Northland Shooters Supply. Call James, they have piles of nice Shilen barrels in stock. I just picked up a 26" heavy sporter, 7 twist in 243 win with a VLD chamber.

  • @thebizkit79

    How did you know to choose .270” rather than .266” ?

    • @vaughnprecision
      @vaughnprecision  Před 6 lety +1

      thebizkit79 243 + the case wall thickness. The 266 would have caused me to cut my case necks way to thin.

  • @timroy51

    love your videos, but bought a savage mod 10 predator in 22-250, with no modifications whats so ever and its 3/8 groups all day with hand loads , i guess what im getting to or asking is why go through all the modifications and money with out seeing what it will do straight from the factory first , not trying to talk bad about the build just curious why so much money needs to be spent right off the bat

    • @vaughnprecision
      @vaughnprecision  Před 5 lety +1

      Tim Roy I always wanted a wildcat so that’s the main reason. The other reason was to post it in CZcams so others could learn how to do it if they wanted to. I have some Savage rifles that I’ve left alone that shoot under 1/2” out of the box, good rifles.!

    What is ratchet rifling?

    • @vaughnprecision
      @vaughnprecision  Před 7 lety +1

      jondchaffin, it's a different way of cutting the rifling. Only a 4 grove vs 6. It has some different angles that makes it easier to clean
