- A Nigerian mother slaps her son so hard his life flashes before his eyes.
FESTIVAL OF SLAPS is used with permission from Abdou Cisse. Learn more at / abdou__cisse .
Ade is joining his Nigerian parents for a celebratory dinner at an elegant restaurant in London. But at one point, his mother slaps him hard, to the shock of the other restaurant patrons.
The force of the slap brings up memories of Ade's past, of growing up in South London with his immigrant parents, when he and his mom would clash over his happy-go-lucky, free-spirited attitude and lackadaisical attitude to life. But the present-day slap, as well as the flow of memory it releases, makes him reflect on Ade's own parenting of his daughter Emma -- and all the things he learned from his mother.
Directed and written by Abdou Cisse, this dynamic short dramedy is, at its heart, a family narrative examining the clash between old-fashioned tough-love African parenting styles and modernity -- a contrast that also informs the film's considerable stylistic risks and energy, making for a watch that is as intriguing and entertaining as it is reflective and empathetic to both generations's perspectives.
The narrative's jumping-off point is the slap in the restaurant, followed by a catalog of conflicts that Ade has had with his mother over time. The film's title references a popular hashtag on Nigerian TikTok, and in many ways, many of the film's visual strategies seem to feed off the platform's cocktail of irreverent wit and quicksilver energy, from the hilariously heightened operatic slow-motion drama of the slaps to the action-packed editing to the almost fractured narrative.
Entering the world of the film at first can be disorienting, but the storytelling also provides interludes in the form of flashbacks to Ade's childhood and adolescence. Rendered in a relatively calmer naturalism, we piece together a strongly emotional yet turbulent relationship between son and mother, with arguments often focused on Ade's immersion into British life and ending in a wallop from Mom.
As actors, Josh Tedeku and Kemi Lofinmakin play young Ade and his mom with a dynamic of love, expectation and resentment that many teen-immigrant parent pairs will recognize, especially noting the pressure and anxiety Ade's mom experiences, trying to parent a wayward son in a culture that isn't her own. But as an older, wiser Ade, actor Tom Moutchi carries the film's primary emotional turning point, as he receives the slap in the restaurant. The slap is to save his life, and realizes how the intensity of his parents' love fueled their sometimes tough approach to keeping him on a solid path in life.
Vividly realized, boldly dynamic and fascinating to watch, FESTIVAL OF SLAPS ends with a full-circle moment, one that not only harkens back to the film's riveting, uproarious beginning but also provides a wry comment on the cyclical nature of family patterns. Errant children become stern parents when faced with the intransigence of their own kids, and suddenly it all becomes clear: how we work out our past in the present, how some things never change and how part of adulthood means realizing how we might be more like our parents than we thought. - Krátké a kreslené filmy
“I will not go to jail for your foolishness today… But I will go for my pride.” That was a pretty badass line. This was also beautifully done and funny as well, wow. The twist at the restaurant. Brought tears to my eyes when he remembered the good times with his mom and now experiencing parenting with his own child.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Agreed
I laughed when his own child was going through what he went through , and he said she ate too much chicken and chips LOL .
I didn't see the twist coming! You captured the essence of the short film very well 😊
As a Nigerian, I can confirm to you that our lives do flash before our eyes.😂😂
Mine starts from creation.
I second this message. Nigerians who have witnessed this exact slap know that you will see your entire timeline
As a St.Lucian & Jamaican I too can confirm that our lives do flash before our eyes!
Lol!! 🤦🏾♀️😂🤣
Why are you laughing? That is physical abuse. I hope you are ok
😂😂 has to be one of the best short films I’ve seen in a minute. As a Nigerian, I can confirm I see my entire timeline whenever my Nigerian mom descends such heavy slap on me. Sometimes, I see the future too.
😂😂😂😂
including other timelines in the multiverse🤣
@@ayodejiilori2808 you know 😂😂
From the word descending I can confirm you’re a Nigerian lol
@@fishstikz743 oh yes, I am 😂😂
Cinematography on point! Seeing the slap in the lady’s eye… the wind from the slap. The beads of sweat flying. I teared up thinking of my own parents. And laughed just the same. ❤
Moment he said" ur a cleaner" I saw his funeral bells ringing
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
This movie is what I needed today. It had me laughing and crying. It had me gasping to keep my soul from leaving my body when he called his mom “just a cleaner”. It was easy to connect to the characters right away. Great acting and great film. Hope we see more of this on Omeleto.
Thank you ❤
Nigerians are very serious when it comes to the success of their children. Education, and having a successful career is very important to them.
Now we understand why Baba was just sitting there while she was giving the Nigerian Heimlich.
Just what I needed at that age. Tough love
Thanks Ommeletto!
"Nigerian Heimlich"! 😂😂😂😂💀
😂😂😂
this comment is goated!!! hahaha
I’m not Nigerian… I’m Asian but I can totally relate ❤️
My moms slaps got me here today 😂
😅
As a Nigerian, I can confirm the validity of the documentary.
As a Surinamese I concur. But i have to say, the stares of my grandmother burning into my sole hurt more than my mothers slaps...
Documentary 🤣😭
Screaming at Documentary lol
I loved it. I felt so many emotions. Embarassment why is the mum hitting her son like that? Angry why is he disrespectful to his mum telling her that she's a cleaner? Lightbulb moment she's has always been saving his life. Laughter, what goes around comes around. This was a great production. Bless the strict mothers' out there.
the mother was not strict. She just behaved like any normal parent would.
@@candlerosemintMy parents never hit me and I turned out fine. Using corporal punishment on children is proven to be traumatic. It is harmful for both their mental health and physical health.
I'm sorry for any person who was beaten and brought up to believe that that is the only form of parenting out there.
lmaoo did you watch the entire short film? I do agree with you about the corporal punishment part. I have had my fair share of trauma in childhood, so I know its a big deal. Its just in this short film, it isn't abuse. The mother was saving her son from choking towards the end@@justanothermortal1373
@@justanothermortal1373 You do realise this isn't real life, it's a drama?
@@candlerosemint A good parent is a strict parent.
So hilarious, truth be told some of those slaps reset our brain
My mother used to threaten that she "would hit me into to the middle of next week"! - This is just what it was like! time travel.
what a hilarious but emotional film. the director really did his thing with this one
As an African child this Brings back so many memories.😂😂😂😂 I love this film
Absolutely brilliant portrayal of a mother's love. Remember, nobody will ever love you as much as your mother does! (In most cases)
It's the high pitch ringing 😂😂😂 they captured it exactly!!
When he invoked his moms spirit at the end 😂😂😂😂
Even the people that haven't seen this yet, felt those slaps. 🤔😆
Saw "nigerian" from omeleto post notification and ran here
Me too😅😅😅
LITCH 😂😂
Nah, you getttt
The slap that was heard around the world!!!
That would be Will Smith.
As a caribbean born and raised, this does happen to me, one time i even visited my past life, it was an awesome experience, till i got back to reality
I just wanna know why she still got the knife during prayer😂😂😂. This was absolutely great!
Hilarious! I enjoyed the mother-son relationship and the unfazed father. What I thought was not what the slaps were for; goes to show you've got to know the whole story instead of being biased 😚😂😉
...and when they're older, they tell you not to hit their grandchildren. Captured a video of my mum and kid playing football together few months ago, it was surprising.
As a Black American this was very enlightening to observe Nigerian culture. This is a very well made and well acted short film. Well done indeed.
You were not observing Nigerian culture, you were observing True African culture. As a man I got flogged by my dad&mom until I was 20😊😊.
@@abdulaitimbo6292 okay
45 hour shift you think you can die on me never 😂😭
Wow this whole thing was perfection! I usually have low expectations for projects similar to this, in the uk. It normally comes out like some gcse drama act, BUT THIS- thissss completely set the bar high! The quality, detail and cinematography of it feels to be ranking as high budget as well. I hope to see more be movies like this! Storytelling relatable african experiences. Such a heartfelt, funny and authentic piece🩷🇳🇬 well done to my people!
😭😭😭and I genuinely laughed
Props to CZcams recommendations for this one
They took the most hilarious topic and made it the most emotional short film…
As a black American I can also relate. Phenomenal piece!!!
Your ancestors must have learned it somewhere, cuz. 😉
I loved this lol. The cinematography was excellent. I'm glad this was an appreciation of a parent's discipline rather than a condemnation of it ❤
Apple doesn't fall far from the tree 😂😂😂
This was a breath of fresh air. Beautiful production and Nigerian portrayal. 🙏🏿
All my Nigerian brothers and sisters gather here if you’ve chop slap bafore👋🏾
Where do I start??? 😂
Do i share this with my family now? Or wait to make it mandatory Christmas viewing?
I cycled through so many emotions watching this. Yes, Nigerian mothers are from another planet.
Nigerian parenting is special. Thank you, mom and pops. ❤
I’m an Indian but I can still relate to this lol 😂
Props to the whole team behind this! A gem!✨
Not the prayers with the back whacking🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
This whole thing was so siiiiiiiick and EXTRMEELY WELL MADE. The story telling, the camera work, the acting, casting, everything!!! I can’t believe this doesn’t have a million views. Absolutely LOVED it!
I am 100% Nigerian, born to and raised by a Yoruba Mother and Father. I endorse this documentary!!!

An absolute masterpiece of laughter and tenderness. Brb just wiping the tears from my eyes. Abdou Cissé strikes again!!!!!
I wanna give this short a million likes! Absolutely gorgeous and brilliant in its conception and execution. Bravo to the team!! ❤❤
This is what you call a cinematic experience 😂
Another Nigerian mother line "before you kill me, I'll kill you"😂
Omo!! This film SLAPS!!! 😊
Memories!!!! I have eye water (and PTSD) watching this!
seems like the mom avoided knocking some sense into him for years and she finally did it, causing him to relive those moments where he needed the sense 😭
7:13 “bring the souvenir wine” 😂
Lol! Others can relate but only Nigerians could TRULY understand 🤌🏾... not the hand on the hips & the FINGER!!😟🥺
Wow.Turn-about's fair play. That one caught me well off-guard. Great. Loved it. Omeleto, you did it again.
Lmao this is great. As a mother this evoked a few different emotions. Laughter, tears of joy, sadness. Good stuff

One of the best things I’ve seen this year! Thank you for making such a beautiful piece. It was so well, done, drove strong messages in the most creative and visually stunning way. 👏🏽
My mom is Somali/Somalian and this is so relatable. The love is deep and their masters at guilting us 🤣😂🤣 mom love is different ❤️
Somali
Fantastic! Kudos on a great story. My family is Caribbean but a mother’s slap is universally understood.
A whole bunch of ass whooping 😂😂😂😂😂
Wow what a great short film lol now we need one for “La Chancla”
There's a new Puerto Rican comedy film called Daniel El Travieso where one of the characters played all by the same actor portrays his mom, a skilled expert at the use of her chancla for literary Everything.
This was absolutely incredible, i'm just lost for words. Its amazing how this made me feel so many things. Joy, sadness, fear, grief. Incredible work done by the filmmakers
"You will not kill me today!"
Incredible cast & iconic minds behind the creative too, so we’ll done 👏🏼👏🏼
This was so beautiful man🤦🏾♂️ I felt this all the way in Detroit and I think every young man of the African Diaspora would be able to feel this
I saw Tom Moutchi and I instantly clicked!

All Divine. 👌🏾
Loved every bit of this film
This was INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!! I would love to see this as a full length feature.
wow this reminds me of something my very naija mummy would always tell me, “for every headache & stress you’ve caused me in this life, you’ll experience double when you have children of your own” 😭
I get the feelin 4real 😭
This was an excellent short film. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you.
This is a stunning short!

Got me cracking 😂
Best cinematography so far. Loved it
Brilliantly filmed👌🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Fabulous and well thought out!
i love this one...as a nigerian child, this is relatable, the plot twist at the end....naaaahhhh straight out fire.....we literally turn out to do same thing to our younger ones, cause our parents in most cases already grown softer over time...
This is such a well made movie I love it - so relatable as a Jamaican brit too 😭
This was well done😂. It had me laughing alot and then that moment he realized how the Mum had done so much for him. I don't know I just started tearing up, I really hope to make my Mama and Dad proud.
