  • Join me for a patriotic celebration at Boston Harborfest 2024, as we witness the ceremonial reading of the Declaration of Independence from the Old State House. The event begins with a welcome address by Mayor Michelle Wu, and we see a huge crowd gathered to partake in this historic tradition.
The Old State House, constructed in 1713, served as the center of royal government in the Massachusetts Bay Colony and played a pivotal role in the American Revolution. It is the oldest surviving public building in Boston and a designated National Historic Landmark. On July 18, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was first read to Bostonians from its balcony by Colonel Thomas Crafts, a member of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Massachusetts.
Today, this tradition is kept alive by the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company, whose Captain Commanding reads the Declaration from the same balcony, recreating the historic moment for all to witness.
