- Along I-35 is a place you've maybe never visited, but always passed. If you take the exit, though, you'll find a village of artists, creators and makers that have built something that's truly worth the trip.
This is an incredible place to visit! What looks like just the ruins of an old building is actually the site of Texas’s first Co-Ed College that was established in 1859, and helped put Salado on the map! And at the museum down the street, you can learn about the Scottish heritage of Salado.
Down Peddler’s Alley, folks have been peddling their crafts for decades, and at Ro Shaw’s studio, you can learn a trade of your own. Stop in for some pottery lessons and to see his artworks.
This beautiful creek has a dark secret. It’s said to flow with the tears of a woman who was cursed by a magical catfish to be stuck in the water forever, loveless and lost. If you visit, you’ll see a statue of Sirena the Indian Mermaid… just beware of any sneaky catfish!
This is the first microbrewery in the county since Prohibition, and it’s also the locals living room. Everyday it’s opened, it’s packed - and for good reason. Along with great brews, there are also food trucks, live music and more! Try their signature Evil Catfish IPA and don’t be surprised if you’re enchanted by the taste…
A true Texas Icon and a historic stop on the Old Chisholm Trail is still serving up the classics you love (hello, addicting hushpuppies!) as well as new favorites with a Texas twist. Stop in for the history and stay for the eats and unique modern vibe!
It’s easy to find a pizza happiness at this food truck at Barrow Brewing. These artisanal-style pizzas are wood-fired in a brick-oven built into the truck, and the sourdough crust is made with yeast from the brewery. The Big Don Pizza (topped with ALL MEAT) will rock your taste buds.
The naturally flowing springs of this creek make for a nice and cool afternoon swim. It’s one of Central Texas’s lesser known swimming holes, which means there’s plenty of room for splashing around and lounging in the shade. Just watch out for those evil catfish!
Ever felt like getting a real bird’s eye view of our beautiful state? If so, the pros at Skydive Temple gotcha covered! They take reservations for tandem jumps (which begin at 10,000 feet and have the jumper spiraling back to earth at 120 mph!) Thursdays through Mondays. You’ll have a fantastic time, but you might also kiss the ground once you get back on it.

It's good to be a day tripper. Drinking all kinds of beer, eating any kind of foods and traveling all over Texas. It influenced me to travel all over the country and around the world as well.
I can only imagine the thoughts of the people seeing Chet cruising to the creek dressed as a mermaid😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Must have been the shrooms…
Dear The Daytripper,
Thank you for what you and your team does.
This is such an underrated channel. It's so high quality, upbeat, and perfectly paced. The amount of subs is almost criminal for a channel like this. Maybe you should consider doing a special with Mike Chen/Strictly Dumpling? He's a food blogger/youtuber who lives in Dallas with a large following. I really think you guys should get more exposure!
I’m not sure outside of Texas. But I know for myself he’s had seasons with PBS for years now
Love to read your columns and glad to see your channel
🤠
Great video. My family has been here since the 1880s even though I'm 48 years old I'm one of the old-timers here. Glad you visited. I graduated high school here in 1993, my dad did in 1958, my grandfather did in 1931. .. And so on. Many people have moved here, it's different than it was years ago. My dad had nine in his graduating class and I had 28 in mine.
I live in salado!
Me too!
My home town.
i’ve driven past salado SO. MANY. TIMES!! what a beautiful town! i’m going to try to visit this summer. ❤
the native americans and the mermaid!!!! 😭💙 what a beautiful story!!! i’m so glad you dedicated time to share that.
Ngl it’s kinda wild seeing this video randomly pop up on my recommended page and it’s all about the next town over from me. Small world.
Indeed. But CZcams knows where you live. Kinda crazy.
The Shed is excellent too, just down the street from Barrow Brewing
Nothing, nothing negative about the revived Stage Coach. However, you’re fortunate to have gone there back when. Truly a “take the exit” or “Day tripping” destination. Quaint, no menus, daily specials verbally presented. Tenured waitstaff. Great food, great price.
It was a different breed back then. A throw back of the best kind.
I certainly enjoyed this. I used to live in Salado and loved it there.
Great city!
The Strawberry patch provides excellent flavored coffee in Saledo
As someone who lives in Salado Texas there's still plenty of Indian artifacts if you know where to look
Great video
I know you can’t talk about Salado without talking about Stagecoach Inn, but man their menu switch leaves something to be desired. They used to have a multi-course meal that was excellent! I just don’t dig the new chef’s taste. Those hushpuppies are still great though!
Today I learned the locals pronounce it "Sa-lay-do" and not "Sa-lah-do" which as a student of Spanish, I've always pronounced it. I drive by on I-35 all the time. Guess I'm going to have to stop in the Inn (get it?) and have lunch sometime. That looked really, really good.
Crazy to see a random video of my home town pop up in my CZcams feed. Hope you had a good time partner.
Betsy was my mama!!
A nice, special touch for the ending of the show, would've been to visit Salado Cemetery and put a rose on the gravesite of country singer, HOLLY DUNN. 🌹
Salado is a favorite stop on our epic motorcycle rides. Great episode!
Bro I live here it’s so small and I love it here
One of my favorite towns
I live right up the road in Jarrell, I’ll have to check this place out
You missed Johnnys! And the sculpture garden….and chuppacabra oh and the gelato guy!
I was parked at HEB waiting for my curbside order watching the last half of this video (cause I wasn't able to stay home and finish it on PBS).. I SWEAR I wasn't ready for Chet as a mermaid. Holy 💩, I literally laughed till I cried. Looked absolutely crazy by the time my order got loaded 🤪😭. Thanks for the laugh today, I need that!!!
HEB needs to sponsor y'all BTW. I do not know a more "Texas" combo.
Chet as a mermaid is a little disturbing.
Good to see Salado doing well.
I was a guest with my parents at the Stagecoach Inn many times in the late 70s and 80s.
Yes, a lot of shops closed during the construction phase 😢
Hell yeah brother
Someone get this man a pair of boot cut jeans
The Salado of today isn’t even close to the Salado of the 70’s. The creek use to flow really good. Now it’s just a trickle. They use to have an Art Fair at Pace Park. Thousands of people showed up everyday. Now, nothing. Everybody would meet up at Dairy Queen. That was the place to be after football games. Dairy Queen and the truck stop, I should add. Salado had less than 1,000 people when we moved there. Now it’s just becoming a city like Round Rock and Georgetown did.
One of the buildings downtown was a saloon and, before businesses bought.
The most fun I had was going to C.B. Hodge Livestock after school. My dad was the bookkeeper there. I got to walk around the back with the cattle. To me, it was a blast!
It’s not the same Salado as it once was but it’s still a great little town!
My other grandparents live there!
There's a show called " Texas eats " and I saw it on CZcams. Did you heard about it?
We should go
This is so weird seeing my town on this big yt channel
🤠
Thanks!
i live here
💪🙌👍
I live in salado
Great city.
Please pronounce the name correctly it's not sa lay do it is sa lah do
Who says it that way?
@@TheDaytripper everyone that understands it's a Spanish word . I grew up in San Antonio very close to Salado creek .
@@TheDaytripper it's just the white people who butchered a Spanish word trying to make it their own .
@@TheDaytripper it means salty in Spanish
It's like Llano the city vs the Llano Estacado! You say them very different. The folks who live in a town get to decide how to say it. That's my thoughts. The name of a town is much deeper than its language of origin.
