Idiot Tries: ARCHERY

- Archery Training and Correct Bow Choice are vital. This gentleman did neither. This gentleman is an idiot.
I'm really interested in different target sports - Air rifle Shooting, Knife Throwing, Axe Throwing, and now Archery... So I bought a cheap recurve bow (cheap and unsuitable for my build, because I am that idiot), set up a 13.5meter (44ft) range - and went at it.
Yes, I shot like the rank amateur I am - but I fell in love with the whole process.
Now to learn...
As a survival tool, the old bow and arrow is a good bit of kit. In our over-legislated country, it's not legal to take game with them, and you'd need different arrow heads to do so, but the power levels attainable make airguns look like toys, and bagging a deer for dinner in a post apocalyptic Britain would be doable with a bit of skill and field craft. The airgun would last until you needed spares or ran out of pellets, but the bow and arrow is all maintainable with simple tools and materials.
Agreed. Personally I put the crossbow at the top of my SHTF list - easier to shoot accurately for someone with less bow experience.
Drew
Heck my wife and I were laughing because we would probably be putting holes in that barn before we ever hit that target. I love archery and have a little experience Jon has given me with shooting a bow, you look to be fairly natural at it. Cheers for the great video, I've been a little behind. 💪👍
Ha thanks Dana. Yeah I'm hooked on the whole archery thing now!
Hi Drew, I hope you are well. You may remember I found you some time ago when coming across your Lone Shootr channel. I am amazed at how much we have in common. My other passions apart from photography are shooting and archery, both of which I can see you have a bug for. Did you get yourself a wooden bow. ?..........I think the bow I enjoy the most is my one piece Samick SHB recurve bow which is mainly wood with carbon and wood laminate for the limbs and doesn't cost a fortune. I like it as it is a simple bow with no gimmicks...... I also collect air weapons and enjoy rebuilding and tuning them...........PS Thank you for mentioning Lars Anderson, I had not heard of him previously. I checked out his CZcams Chanel after you mentioned him. What an incredible archer !!!
Yep, Lars is an inspiration. As for bows, I'm now looking for a traditional bow - I haven't prioritised it for a good while due to work and weather... but summer will get here at some point.
Hopefully.
I'll take a look at the bow you mention, thank you.
13m is okay for starting out. The bow is a child’s bow the riser is too short for you. If you’re going for a wooden bow you’ll need to shoot a bit quicker because they don’t like being at full draw for too long.
I used to shoot recurve at county level max distance 90m 100 yards depending on which round. It’s 5% equipment and 95% form I did a lot of visualisation exercises and in the outdoor season was shooting around 600 arrows a week. My draw weight was around 53lbs but that’s really too much so you don’t need to go super heavy. Although for the older guys Compound bow was the bow of choice.
Good info, thanks David.
Grand video honest . I have a compound bow I love to shoot we have a range near by it 80 acres they have all kinds of animal targets at varying distances it’s a hoot to shoot stay safe
Thank you my friend. I'm really enjoying the bow.
Native American archery was very different from what we know today. There were different styles in America, but in the Southwest they used very short bows and the arrows were seldom more than 2' long. It was more like using a slingshot.
That's interesting stuff. I like the idea of a short bow, short arrows - the horse bow type of archery appeals to me.
Drew
Very good form right out of the gate. Little string plucking on release but everything else looks pretty solid. Won't take you long with that start. Guarantee you that you are doing better starting with bow than I will be starting with knives.
It's a lot of fun for sure. I'm about to buy a horse bow - lightweight 30lb. Reckon that'll suit me while I build up some strength...
Good stuff.
Dad got me a bow about same time.
I was born in 57. Too funny 😁
A good year, '57 😎
I find anything with arrows to be very destructive. Most of my shots result in either the arrow being gone forever or broken. Also whatever the arrow hits is broken (rarely the target I was aiming for)
Yep, they're destructive for sure!
Alot better than I'd do , there probably would be holes in the shed , and a few windows gone, well done that man, 😁👍
Ha yeah - I since been told I should have started at 10 feet and not 44... I got off light I think.
That is very good. Just love the bow.
Yeah it's a lot of fun - and a new challenge!
Drew
Your video is a bit like top gear, but with weapons, great fun. No one gets hurt.
Correction: no one gets hurt...on camera 🤣
If you want a real quality wooden bow have a look at the Falco bows, sublime craftmanship and superb quality for a very fair price.
( I'm basing this on your opinion on top quality air rifles like Air arms & Weihrauch )
Thanks brother. I just took a look at their website - I'm liking the look (and the price) of the Falco Legend...
@@PlanetDrewdog
I have the Falco Myth & Saga both are fantastic.
I shoot a Weihrauch HW97k and I'm looking at adding the Air Arms TX200hc or Pro Sports and a HW80.
Are you still using the bow? I'm a clay shooter but had a go yesterday with the other half. Have you ever tried a crossbow?
Loving the bow! I have a pistol crossbow I modified - it's a whole lot of fun too 😎
@@PlanetDrewdog Are you getting any better with the bow? Fancy joining a club? I'm guessing you've got a lot of spare time if you're retired 😉 It's a long way off for me. I remember thinking 'FUCK THIS' walking home after my first day at work. 27 years later and I've got to say my opinion hasn't changed 👍
New sub. Great vid, thanks for sharing!
Thanks for the sub Shane!
Try a compound bow and a compound cross bow, very powerful.
Get yourself a sight for the bow they're on Ebay.
Not bad go at it my friend. I have a how to archery video on my channel that may help you out. Shoot strait brother.
Thanks Jon I'll head on over and take a look. I need all the help I can get...
The first shot was the best one!haha
If I judge by my first time shooting a slingshot id rather not buy a bow...😅
😅 I need to try a slingshot next...
Practice makes perfect!
