- It's June and myself and @AndrewBeavers are backpacking 80 miles along the Cumbria Way in the Lake District. Our plan is to complete the trip in 5 days, hiking and camping along the way, so all of our gear will have to fit in our backpacks. Part 1 of this series covers the first 2 days from Ulverston to Langdale. The weather and scenery was beautiful, making for an amazing adventure.

Great vid but TRAINERS????
I am 83 and have been a passionate hiker since my teans.Sadly I have just about lost the use of my legs and I use videos like yours to remind me what a beautiful country we live in.I still go youth hosteling though. Been a member for 70 years. Do you never use hostels on long paths? I used to pick a hostel every couple of days so I could wallow in a bath or hot shower to set me up for the next couple of days!! Keep the videos going- they are keeping me alive! regards, Walter.
'Chunky Dunking' - nice one Jo 🤣
Brilliant Paul. So glad you kept going with CZcams. Your new approach is fresh and chilled out. Looks more healthy from here. Thanks to Jo too, for pushing you through. Enjoying this adventure v much mate👊🏼
It's almost like watching Tarantino with all those feet.
Awesome journey, Paul. Really envy you those areas in the UK.
Btw, Jo IS funny 😁
There's an idea. Quentin style videos on camping 😁
Awesome, good to see the mids out !!!
Great memories of last year watching this
Hi. As others have said the rash is exercised induced vasculitis. It’s benign and will fade, just looks really unsightly. I’ve had it a few times, particularly if doing a lot of walking on hot days. Some people find that compression socks help, but on hot days it’ll make your legs hotter - so swings and roundabouts. Like many things it’s commoner as we get older
There may be a link to dehydration, so make sure you’re keeping up with your fluids
If it is indeed vasculitis, then it should be checked out by a specialist. This could be an indication of an autoimmune disorder.
Looks more like cellulitis
Me and my two kids had a dip in how’s tarn on a warm hike a year ago. Great way to cool down
SCORCHIO!!!!!! That’s the great thing about the UK, there’s always a country pub to stop and get a cold beer and a bellyful of grub!
Great filming, Paul. At times it was like a Star Wars movie, with the Jedi foot-massager and 'The Force' meditation at 20mins in. 'Ewoks-The Battle for Endor' comes to mind, no offence!
Not quite a Jedi. More like Jabba the Hutt 😂
Love the Langdales, some great shots there!
Awesome footage and wot a great walk so far, 👍
Glad too see the biltong mandingo! You know it makes sense!
Thanks Paul, look like you’re losing weight also. Can’t wait for the next installment.
Best commentary once that heads clear after 5 days much better.
Great first instalment mate, rash looks nasty. Hope it’s all sorted. Will def be watching the follow ups
Well at least you had some company. But what spectacular scenery. Nice one paul .
Nice vid chunky surprised you didn’t walk on top of the tarn with them pasties 😀
Brilliant video Paul, fantastic scenery. Wearing shorts might help with that rash. Our bin men wear hi vis trousers like yours!
My only reason for not wearing shorts was, I’m a magnet for biting insects. I had a pair for around camp, so I still got bitten 😂
absolutely loved all of the videos of the Cumbria way , loved the views , I liked you camped at sites just to freshen up and charge batteries and also grab some food and a well deserved beer , ive managed to pick up lots of ideas from these videos , my friend and I are planning to do this in 2025 for charity and I feel a lot more confident after watching these
Ive just escaped my thoughts for 23 minutes. Thank you
Had to laugh when you were at "Chesters by the River". We went there a couple of years ago and I've seen more appetising stuff in the grass box of my lawn mower. Looks like you got lucky with the notsausage roll! Did the same route but from the north, supervising Army Cadet groups, as you say, it's beautiful country. Good video Paul, thanks.
Didn’t mind the feet, actually. They look pretty darned healthy with all that walking and the wide foot box. Happy piggies!
great edit Paul, and great to see you doing a multiday trip... even with the feet !!!
Nice chilled video. Enjoyed it! Lots of familiar places.
Really , really enjoyed this first segment and boy did you enjoy that first gulp of that pint! Can't wait to see the rest of these , brilliant stuff!!
I could’ve nailed about half a dozen of those pints. 😂. Not sure i would be able to hike next day though.
Brilliant. Can’t wait to see the next vid
A great watch Paul. Brings back memories from my time doing it a couple of years ago. Got me thinking now about doing it again! 🤣👍🥾
I think I’d love to do it again. Can I have a little rest first?😂
So chuffed you did it with that northern beauty of a human @AndrewBeavers ! Props to you both ! Amazing weather to start it on !
Paul, that rash is Exercise-induced vasculitis. I get it. Feels like sunburn when you go in the bath afterwards! Goes in a few days though.
Finished the video this morning, loved it and it brought back lots of memories. I finished at Coniston early in the 1st day, so dumped the tent and headed part way up the Old Man, but it was getting late and I was tired, so came back. Have since returned and tackled the mountain
I’ve camped on the old man myself. That alone is quite a trek.😂 I certainly wouldn’t have fancied it after a day of hiking. I was glad of a pint and a place on a campsite.
@Paul Messner yeah I figured as much after an hour or so. I was a lot fitter back then and thought it was worth a wander but realised I was due to walk a lot more on day two so needed the rest haha
Good on you for trying the vegan sausage roll!
Nice to see some nature (fauna and flora) included in your videos, Paul, a nice change.
Thanks Mike. this trip wasn't really about the usual camping. I was blown away by the colours of the greenery and the flowers, and dropped a bit lucky seeing a bit of wildlife.
They do 1000kcal versions of those Expedition Foods, which is a bit more appropriate after you've put down some serious miles.
Langstrath was my favourite part of the Cumbria Way, so I'm looking forward to part 2.
Thanks mate. It was gorgeous. Part 2 just released now.
Beautiful views all around. Thanks for the effort in bringing us this video, Paul
Love the video, brought back great memories
What a great film, you really could not have got better weather
Great video thanks for sharing Paul. Look forward to seeing the rest of the trip!
Long walk and stunning view. Well done pal👍
What a beautiful area! Thanks for sharing your trip.
That view at 4:06 of the Tarn... stunning. Nice video Paul
Great video Paul
Looked at great trip and you were certainly blessed with fantastic weather. Never laughed so much when Miyagi Beavers put in an appearance @AndrewBeavers 😂😂
Stunning video Paul. You managed to capture the beauty of the Lake District at its best.
Well, that was a rather jolly amble in the countryside.
Brilliant as usual Paul, if you fancy a classic hike in Northern Ireland give me a call you'll be blown away 😎
Hopefully we will be heading over to Northern Ireland later in the year are meeting up with Stephen Reid. If you’ve not watched his channel, go, check him out.
Wow superb! Lake District looks absolutely amazing, that scenery!
Great film mate. You need to do The West Highland Way & film it of course. I did it in April & it was EPIC. Keep up the good work
This makes me really want to get out and do that route. Great video and you seem to be enjoying it so much, it's great to watch!
Bloody brilliant Paul.
Cheers 🍻
The way you drank that pint was the only way to drink after a long walk.
I have to control myself, or I’d have supped the lot 😂
Top adventure. Good to see you take on the challenge 👍💪
Look forward to the next episode.
Looks like golfers' vasculitis. I get the same when it's hot. The joys of getting old. Compression socks or sleeves help me a lot.
Looks like fun so far doing well with the weather this week I would imagine a wild swim on the cards lovely area of the lakes look forward to next video well done keep safe enjoy 👍🏻
That looks like a poison oak rash, but I’m not sure if you have that horrible plant in the UK although you may have something similar there. It’s very prevalent here in Northern California. Really love the greenery you have over there, very impressive scenery. Thanks for the vid Paul, good video technique and editing and you seem very happy now.
Thanks mate. We do have a few plants that could cause a rash here in the UK, but apparently this was just vasculitis or Disney rash as it’s often called. much better now. Also thanks for the final sentence. I’m so much happier these days. I just needed a bit of a reset and a revaluation of what really matters. Thanks for the support.
Good to see you giving the vegan options a go, Paul 🌱👍
To be honest, we hadn’t realised it was a vegan café, but I have had stuff that’s vegan before and it’s quite tasty.
@Paul Messner Good stuff 👍 It definitely doesn't hurt to give it a try. This was a really enjoyable film. As always, thanks for taking the time to make these videos👌
Great scenery and a amazing camp site thanks for sharing Paul, I'm going there in 2 weeks for 2 nights solo camp, cheers Paul for amazing video.
Great video cant wait for the next installment.
A great video Paul. You are an inspiration to so many people.
Thoroughly enjoyed this video! Keep up the good work Paul!
Excellent video! Makes me want to get out and do another long distancer! Lots of good memories seeing conniston again. In 47 and my father first took me there when I was 11 and we wild camped besides a tarn near the summit of the old man! Thank you lots of memories!
Great watch, Look forward to the rest of the journey lads👍
Great video. Inspirational stuff
Great to see part 2 up quickly! Thanks Paul. First one was great. Only a few mins in to part 2 but loving it. I walked it about a million years ago when I was young and at it! Hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. (Plenty of pubs!?)
great video. thanks for sharing. look forward to the next one.
Spent many childhood years at Tarn Howes, happy memories seeing you there. Great video looking forward to the next one.
Another great video, love-em
The walk between Ulverston and Coniston is right up there with the best walks I’ve ever done.
Great scenery and I walk I’d recommend to anyone
Great video so far Paul look forward to the rest of them, stunning weather we've had for about 3 weeks now you couldn't of picked a better time 👊👍🥃
Hi Paul, I got the exact same thing on my legs doing the WHW a few weeks back. Pretty sure it's a circulation issue
Looks absolutely gorgeous, Paul. You're a lucky man!
Great video!
Thanks mate, I’m glad you like the video. It really is a stunning hike.
Brilliant video Paul, excellently shot and edited as always, and a great achievement pal.
Thanks mate, my legs are getting back to normal now. Really enjoyed this one
@@PaulMessner thats good to hear mate, looking forward to part 2 👍🏼
Brilliant 👍
Loved watching this ❤
Cheers pal 🍻😀
Cracking that Paul. Nice mixture of scenery and chat. Looked a cracking start to the trip. Weather gods definitely on your side. Really enjoyed that mate. Take it easy. ATB. Craig (W101)
Enjoyed that, just enough to give the flavour without too much of the "iconic" CW shots!
Great skills Paul, good distance even without the video stuff. Weather has been well nice at think it set to continue.
Great to see you out on a big trip! We were up in the lakes in May and apparently the Coniston Hall campsite was like Glastonbury over the Coronation weekend. With weather like you are having, you could just keep going forever! Looking forward to the next instalment. As always, Thanks for sharing.
Usually It’s awful during weekends as party time
Nice video, brought back some good memories of my own CW last year. The walk along Coniston seemed to go on forever as I recall!
That’s an amazing little trip !
Can't believe you ditched the straps on your poles, gripping those things with your hands must use up more energy than hiking! When I buy poles the straps are about the only thing I worry about, if they aren't comfortable the poles are useless. I've been eyeing the Cumbrian Way for a couple of years now, this is the third trip report I've watched, it's definitely giving me itchy feet.
Holy smokes, what a beautiful hike!
Well done Paul, solid performance there mate. In terms of footwear have you tried the Altra Olympus trail shoes, they're like the lone peaks but have more cushioning.... much better for reducing shock on the ankles and knee's. The rash maybe Hikers rash.... Hiker’s rash is the common term used to describe the medical condition known as exercise-induced vasculitis. Although typically not serious, it can be quite uncomfortable. It is typically an itchy, red rash that is sometimes accompanied by burning, stinging, or pain.
Keeping it clean and applying anthisan sorted it for me. Not a lot of chemists in Langdale, I’m guessing.
Excellent video,Ya man got right idea straight in water ..
Nice and easy well done
Stopped over night at Beacon tarn for my first night. Went for a swim, didn’t see another soul all evening.
How far is that from the start please?
Looking forward to pt 2
Does anyone know what the little fish are at 18:00? Beautiful video, and really makes me regret not taking one of the last couple of weeks off and doing something like this.
Brings backs good memories. You’re making me want to do it again. I chose the mountain route last time. Absolutely loved Great Langdale campsite. From there it was up to Bowfell. Nice one!
Meant to say, I went from doing the Cumbria Way to the Cape Wrath Trail the following year. You gotta do it Paul - it’s absolutely epic! End of March/beginning of April is your best shot at half decent weather and to beat the midges and ticks.
Great stuff Paul, looked like you were really enjoying the trail.
Your best filming ever I would say 👌
I'll be interested to hear how you get on with the rest of it 👍
ATB Alistair 👍
I've just been up Scafell Pike this weekend, heat aside, it was an amazing experience. Such an amazing view up there.
Excellent start!
Did this a few years ago with my other half, we had a lovely adventure all the way to Carlisle and some lovely beer stops on route too. Looking forward to seeing the entire walk again with you.
Thanks mate, I’m really glad you enjoyed the video. It’s a great walk
This one is on the tick list after the WHW next year. Lovely video Paul! Looks like the weather was crackin' too
Funny, you should mention that. I quite like the sound of the West Highland Way.😂
@@PaulMessner Was supposed to be doing it this year but I've pinged my LCL doing the Two Moors Way last year. Once it is healed I am off baby!! Aiming for spring next year to miss the midge season
Great tents! I just ordered mine today.
Great Monday evening video. 😊
Brilliant mate! You had the weather. We had to do it in 3.5 days hiking due to the floods at top of stake pass slowing us down 😂😢
Well done on a fantastic first video !
Loved that Paul, looks a great trip 🏴
20 miles on the first day is pretty good going! Obviously not the toughest in terms of terrain but that's a lot miles. I might look into doing the Cumbria way at some point although I might do it over a slightly longer time period. Maybe 7 or 8 days.
Great video as always Paul. Did the Lakeland Trails marathon around Coniston on Sunday which covered a lot of the same route. Feeling I can enjoy the scenery more in your video than I could while running around in the baking heat😅
