- Burt is a 1989 talbot express. I got him in the summer of 2020 and moved in pretty much straight away. I did make some adjustments which I will get to later in the video. Before this, I lived in a smaller, jankier van for a few years while I was at university. I got into vanlife because of watching CZcams videos of people living this simplistic travel life and I'm so grateful I was in the position to actually give it a go. I decided to not go for a set job and instead, work on becoming a freelance filmmaker after university, so that’s what I did.
After I got Burt, I started spending all my money on fixing him up and making him functional enough to live in. I first ripped out the old bathroom and water heater, fixed up the floor under the fridge, built the standing desk, and replaced a few old parts. Then I went on some pretty fun trips during the summer, broke down multiple times, and spent a lot of money fixing up Burt. I pretty much traveled to wherever I had work and lived in Burt on the way. I will make a video on my whole vanlife story in the future. It got complicated at some points and it’s been quite a journey.

Love the van! Ours is a little bit younger than yours, but still no spring chicken at 20! Some things that we learnt the hard way that might be helpful to you...You can change your strip lights to LEDs really easily and you will notice a HUGE difference in the power draw. You can get a cheap roll of foil backed insulation for a tenner from B&Q or similar and make some screens, especially for the cab windscreen and side windows....again, you'll immediately notice a difference. Lastly, in winter, rugs are your friend...even cheapo ones from a market will add a layer on insulation on your floor and make the whole van warmer...plus a bit softer on the feet as well! Good luck!
Thanks a lot for the tips!! I do actually have LED’s but forgot to put it in the video haha.
Sounds great :)
This is how i do the plonk. love it XD great humour mate. got a 1989 Fiat Ducato / Talbot Express, thanks for bigging up the classic vans!
You either love or hate the old Talbot. We both love our old motorhome. Despite its problems. We are both too old to live in a van. Cheers from old George and Jane 👍👫🇬🇧
Get your gear linkages done. You can get the. gear stick brilliant without big expenditure.
what a great video thanks very much for sharing.
thx for your video
Get your gear linkages replaced to make your lever firm
Just watching this now. Class 🖤
Great video. Iv got the same Van live init full time for the passed 6 month's. It's only just broken down the rear wheel bearing have packed up. So just waiting for new part's
Clearly, Burt is the mintest van of all the mint spots to live out there.

*Massive Wode*
The biggest wode ♥️
I have a 2019 state of the art sprinter conversion and I have to say it is characterless compared to your Talbot express, i,m worried so much about breaking it that I can’t live in it and use it, I love your van, from the checkered upholstery to the stainless control panel, it just oozes character. Ps get a gimble, your making me dizzy 👍 subbed
Nice video mate!
Thanks!!
Love this hehehe Bert tour finally woooo keep at it Lewis :D
Thanks friend!!
@@Doddsy Burt* oh gosh soz Burt
Hi just subbed, I have the same van! and like you I bought it to live in. Been working on it over the winter and its now on the road. I have solar which I installed and it runs my 12v TV/Monitor all day and evening no problem. I produce more power than I use! very cheap to buy too. I kept my thetford toilet and have no issues to empty it. Ive done a lot of work on the van and installing a deisal heater was great and very cheap to run. look forward to more videos. If you need any suggestions on how to improve it just email me. I am a film maker too. great channel: edited comment I saw your channel picture has the old pier in weston! I filmed it in 2015 lol
Hey dude, any help you can offer re power would be great. I have a leisure battery that sorts out the lights, but not even a USB socket in sight!! I'm crap with things like this but need to get better!! Hope you're enjoying the summer!
@@leehoddinott5782 change your existing lights to LED very easy cheap last 8 times longer lol. USB in the cig socket will work but not great for the starter battery. I may make a van tour too of mine to show how i made it solar on the cheap lol
The grill you a round grill that seats on one of the ring if yo need toast. My heater is good it's a propex but uses a bit of gas.
Deeeeeeeelightful!
1 nice to u
I love Burt
Burt loves you
More van stuff please, I've just bought a LWB Talbot 1989 and it's completely rotten so it's all stripped ready to be rebuilt. Would love to hear more pros and cons and things on your wishlist for off-grid living. Based down on the south coast of the UK
How did your build go i have the same van
I would be carefull of all the extra weight also doin a service filters etc is very easy i can do it in 45mins even first time as a novice was onliy 2 hrs the talbot is very easy to do repairs on its good to learn parts are cheap if your goin to keep it for a few yrs
Have you joined the talbotoc forum yet? Lots of useful info. Also I can tell who to avoid dealing with.... I'll message you if you like. We have a Talbot Express Highwayman 1989. It's a money pit 😁
Perth is where i live, it's actually a City lol. Great video though and i will be subscribing.
Thanks Will! I had a nice time there to be fair, lovely walks!
This is so inspiring!! I have a 1992 version of this van that I bought last year during lockdown. She has a wood burner for those cold nights but no electric system!! You've reminded me how amazing they can be for more than just a few days! I'm gonna find me someone that can help with the electrics, unless you know anyone in Wales lol? Thanks again Buddy, hope you and Bert have many many adventures to come!
Hey man how’s the Talbot going? Currently working on a 94 Talbot to live in. Any pointers I would be grateful 🙏🏻
I'm thinking of buying a 1991 LWB Talbot Express Eldis, 94K on the the clock. Would you recommend?
It will run on veg oil believe it or not dont knock it so much it might be old but so what I sold mine yrs ago and have regretted it ever since
How do you get used to the stand up desk set up? I'm hunched over my desk all day, but can't imagine standing over it all day!
I'd recommend getting a standing desk first then just stand when working, sit when taking breaks. Honestly, it doesn't take that much getting used to and I literally never have any back problems. I used to have so many different pains in my back from sitting all day. Never get any problems now!
Belta like
big belta nice
I'm very stressed about your heater that only works in warm weather!
Winter was tough haha
Buy a few spot lights they use less than the original lights
Thanks for the tip :)
Hand wound torch useful as a backup light source.
you promised
