  • Today@ Working Horses With Jim, I hook up all four Belgian and Percheron draft horses to see if they are strong enough to pull out a huge boulder that I dug out of my corn field. #horsepower #drafthorses #drafthorsefarming
Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horses farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

That was some of the very very best horsemanship I have seen in years. Your quiet, firm and steady treatment of your team was wonderful to watch. Despite a wreck you kept calm outside and didn't worry your team. No slapping, or shouting, just asking them. I just loved it. My Dad worked horses and he would have enjoyed this very much!!!

My grandfather worked his team in the Train yard in the winter, he had the only team that could start box cars and move them alone, they had to use four horses most of the time. Gramps had big Belgian mares and they would hang in the harness and lean into it until it began to move. That team would do anything for him and he would never allow anyone else to work them.

As my dad used to say, The horses earned there oats today. They actually like to pull like that. You go to a horse pull and you see them just excited and get down low and just give it there all. Good job today Jim.

I spent my summers on a farm in Nebraska where we farmed with draft horses back in the late 50's & early 60's.. I have a lot of time driving a team. Great to see these teams doing this. I knew from the beginning they would not have a problem with pulling this stone. Didn't think about one not being as trained as the others. I'm 78 & my team driving was when I was 14 or 15. Still love to watch a team doing 'their thing'!

Yep, I grew up on a small farm in East Tennessee. My dad would take a team of mules into peoples gardens that were on steep hillsides ( no rototillers) to earn a little money . I’d tag along , I loved being around my dad and the teams.
My dad would plough, disk , whatever needed doing.
But working a team of mules is different than working horses.

Jim, opinions are like bellybuttons----everyone has one. I'm very happy that neither you nor the horses were injured in the mishap. You persevered and found a better solution wrt the horse arrangement and it was amazing to see all of that power put to the ground. Once on the grass, the stone boat pulled much easier and the horses truly looked magnificent. Brenda also did a fantastic job videoing the action as well as running to the barn and back to help you with the task as hand. Riding her bike and running the camera at the same time was really awesome. Thank you for sharing your life with us!

Great video! Besides the drama of moving the huge rock (that kept us all on the edge off our seats) I found three things very enjoyable in this video. First was the sound of the horses walking through the tall grass. What a beautiful sound. I also enjoyed listening to the horses breathing at the end of the pull. When do you get to experience the heavy breathing of gentle giants? And the third great thing I enjoyed was Jim riding the rock. When will you ever see that again. He’d sit us little kids up on top of the horses in their stalls, and he could see us from the milking row of cows. What a beautiful team of horses. It’s fascinating how they try to cooperate with you when hitching up by lifting and moving their hoofs. You could see that you were genuinely upset when the horses had trouble and the last thing you would want is to cause them any hurt or harm .... so don’t pay too much heed to any negative comments.
Huge shoutout to Brenda ...... that lady truly loves you to go running back and forth to the farm and try help you any way she can.
For what it’s worth, I think one thing that made it harder to pull was that the stone sled was too small a footprint.
In other words, I think it might have moved easier if you had a bigger platform/sled with the load spread over a bigger area.
Same way as in heavy trucking they use a longer trailer with more axles to distribute the load over a bigger area and lower the weight concentrated on each point of contact with the road.
I am also surprised that the mini excavator would not have the pulling power to drag the sled too. Probably has the power but the tracks slip too much on the loose soil. Maybe next time try hook the excavator and the skid steer both to the sled and pull.
In any case, congratulations on a great video and hope you never have to pull such a crazy load again.

This video is SO interesting.! I love it. It says a lot about your relationship with your horses that they continued to trust you after the first unsuccessful try. And it says a lot about your horsemanship the way you did the pull in stages. Well done.

You're in a situation like when I get my 32 HP JD Compact tractor stuck. I hate to call the neighbor with the bigger tractor but I have to. Some years ago I kept hitting a rock while mowing trails with my brush hog. I tried digging it out with my front end loader. It was at the base of a glacial drumlin. I dug down as far as I could and gave up without finding the bottom. I realized I could never pull it out with my tractor. Now I just go around it. You probably need a bulldozer. I'd sell that boulder to a horse pulling contest as long as they come and get it.

First and foremost, no one (meaning the horses first and for most got hurt or injured) I have no doubt in my mind that the well being of each and every one of them. Buck ,Ken ,Bill , Lady, was in the front of JIm's mind. and one other thing that I observed was the amount of determination shown. you could see that in their hind quarters when they dug in. The will of all four was there. Jim asked and they pulled great job all round to JIm for his caring of his horses first. I could see the concern for his horses on his face first. then the rock. and task at hand. All concerned, all determined, all were successful. Thanks for sharing. I'm just so glad it worked out and no one got hurt. God Speed
