You could do a weekly podcast of just you and Tyler and I'd watch every week
What???? Only 8 minutes talking about bitcoin ??????
Economics, Nuclear war... Putin, China... Jiro dreams of Sushi... Meaning of life...
Phew!! In the immortal words of Ron Burgundy, "That escalated quickly!".
Loved Jiro dreams of sushi... Another Japanese doc on craftsmanship is The kingdom of Dreams and Madness.
Thanks Lex. Looking forward to listening to it.
P.S Can you please have Jaron Lanier on your podcast??
Did you do a podcast with GSP? If so when is it coming out?
Hey Lex, in the same vein, another interesting guest would be Matt Levine from Bloomberg. His columns and Tyler Cowne's blogs have taught me a lot over the years.
Bring him again. This interview had enough momentum to run for another hour.
@Elias Håkansson I'll definitely look for it! and Lex ... terrific as always.
Agreed! One of the best economist of our time- he has amazing consistent content on his blog- a pleasure to dive into. Constant learning and analytical thinking! Thank you Tyler Cowen- you are a gem in our society.
Agreed. He’s a gem. He knows how to interact with a robot! Lol
He lost my respect when he said: we're able to last way longer than seven and eight hundred years.
Tyler’s thinking is on a whole different level, he really seems to think in first principles and make up his own opinions about so many topics. Breadth and depth
🙂
Lebth and plenth
Great guest. Became a fan of Tyler Cowen after his appearance on The Portal with Eric Weinstein. Dude has really interesting takes 🔥
Tyler Cowen is a polymath. All the intersections in subjects enables him to provide very unique takes.
Yes! me too! I love this guy. he has so many interesting thoughts. I also found him through The Portal, and watching him and Eric talk together really made me see them both as true reneassans men of today
Check out Tyler's excellent podcast where he conducts his own interviews! They are excellent.
Tyler is fantastically entertaining and interesting.
same , i just noticed he had been on Lex and here i am.
Lex should talk to David Friedman (Milton Friedman’s son not the diplomat). He has a phd in physics and is a professor of economics and law. His work revolves around how to provide legal protection in a pure free market.
Agreed. This is the guest that I want Lex to talk to the most. It's tragic how little attention David Friedman gets. He's kind of rejected by most libertarians cuz of how consequentialist and scientific his approach is, because most libertarians tend to linger on absolutist moral conjecture. But he's certainly the person with the most interesting things to say about the subject.
Or his son Patri Friedman! He's also very insightfully builds up on theory work of his father with the seasteading project
Hi @@cdg39526 what background do these terms absolutist moral conjecture, consequentialism and libertarian come from? Philosophy? Politics? Asking for a friend :)
@@xian2708 Absolutist Moral Conjecture is just something I made up. I mean that libertarians often make claims about morality that can’t be proven and then base their whole political ideology on them as if they are scientific facts. Consequentialist and Libertarian are words are used in political philosophy, yes.
@@justsaynotoboomers Libertarians tend to rely more on moral axioms. The political left and right are not very morally principled I don’t think. They appeal to morality but they don’t really have a consistent moral philosophy underpinning their ideas. But Libertarians usually do. And those principles concern them with personal freedoms, yes. The problem is that moral axiom are always conjecture on some level since they can’t be proven. This is why David Friedman’s consequentialist approach is better, I think.
"Pick some model, be weird in it. You might fail, that's socially better" I love this a lot.
I love how Lex always looks for the positives in things. We need more people like that in today’s world.
Especially when he offers you your meal of choice before murdering you
Why are YOU so negative? I think there are lots of people like that in today's world.
Yeah, he’s the man!!
Danny boy nailed it. We need to discern shit from shinola.
I think it's our responsibility to push things towards a positive outcome. It's true that there is a "happiness-washing" that social media/society-in-general push but that doesn't mean that our lives aren't good/important/within our responsibility to change.
I love lex's attitude and his willingness to be " naive" about goodness.
I think lots of things are wrong with our society, but it's our responsibility to push for positive changes. Lex does a fantastic job opening up the space and asking interesting questions - bravely, I might add.
Finally! Tyler Cowen is one of the most interesting persons I've ever listened to. I check his twitter feed on a daily basis. He has a way of thinking in "contrarian" terms. It's hard to describe it but he has a knack for turning your arguments upside-down and make you consider things you've never thought of before.
Thanks for your feedback for more guidance and lesson+

Amongst a plethora of fascinating guests, Mr. Cowen is one of the best the channel has had so far. Simple, straightforward and on point. Even seems unbiased, if there is such a thing.
Watching and listening to you guys interact is intense, there is a serious but also playful atmosphere without any trace of resentment or anything besides mutual admiration. Very good.

Just want to throw in an early thank you Lex. Love your interviews
Though, just saying NDGT isn't also a scientist - like his names on papers, that he has been part of publishing. That was a bit patronising
Tyler Owen, one of the smartest people I've had the pleasure of listening to.
Thank you, Mr. Lex. What an awesome podcast.
My god, I always start every interview with a smile and finish them with a bigger and more fulfilling one. What an amazing podcast! As always, thank you very much, Lex! Love you!
I have lived both in the US and Denmark and it is certainly true that Scandinavia does not allow for much weirdness. I love my country but I'd love it even more if we allowed for more risky thinking.
As a Norwegian I have to disagree. Denmark is a country full of weirdos. Snaps for breakfast/lunch five days a week ;)
@@palfurukamsvag6542 nice one!
ha I was in such a bad mood but Lex posting cheers me up instantly. Thanks for existing Lex. I'm sure the guest will be interesting as usual.
One of my favorite conversations, thank you Lex and Tyler!
Thank you both! Excited to get into this one!! 🦾
One of my favourite alternative voices and thinkers, his podcast is one of my superb. His broad ray of detailed knowledge makes his endless curiosity a joy to listen to. Thank you for this conversation.
I didn't ever listen to or know about Tyler Cowen before, but now I want more.
This conversation was indescribably rich. Thank you. 🙏🏼
I love your podcasts, started listening just awhile ago. To hear positive, intelligence is refreshing.
A conversation between two hosts of my two favorite podcasts. I never thought this would happen. Thank you, Lex.
Keep them coming Lex!
Why haven't I heard earlier of him?! Top notch content!! 👌
Such a great conversation from two great individuals.
Great job Lex - I really appreciated hearing this conversation. I am really enjoying your podcasts.
This was simply amazing, and I know you would specially appreciate the fact that i'm currently in Angola, central Africa, with a good internet connection, listening to this while i shop. One of the great advantages of technology!

Cowen is always interesting. He has one of the more thought provoking podcasts. If you enjoy Lex you'll probably like Conversations with Tyler.
Great podcast! Great to see Tyler being his unique brand of analysis and insight to a whole myriad issues, been looking forward to this one for a while! Hopefully a round two coming some time in the future? ;-)
@lex fridman Oh wow thanks dude, appreciate getting an actual reply from you
Really great conversation, please have him on again. More economists!
Another gem ! Thank you Lex ! Love the way Tyler Cowen answers ... Always to the point :)
Love Tyler’s thought on healthcare. It should be much more competitive. If we were treated as customers then hospitals would have to compete for people’s business.
100%. And the most common counter-argument is that some health services are non-voluntary (for example, if you have a heart attack, you don’t get to choose what hospital you wake up in), but that counter-argument ignores the fact that most health services ARE voluntary. If I broke my arm, it would benefit me as a consumer to have hospitals competing to offer me the best service, rather than me being forced to choose from only hospitals within my heath insurance network.
Amazing podcast allaround! Thank you for all the content and inspiration Lex!
This podcast inspires me more than a "inspirational speaker", gives me more hope in humanity, listening to this conversation from art, economics, psychology etc.. with some humor from Tyler is peaceful to listen to. I enjoy the joyful optimism and curiosity.
Absolutely love this conversation!
As someone who did their undergraduate in economics and is now studying a master's in data science and AI, I have been waiting for this interview for a while. It really did not disappoint. Great stuff Lex.

I love when Lex asks about love
Yes! I love tyler! Can't wait
This was a great interview.
These conversations are a new and powerful way to drive our social instincts forward. Connecting to the spontaneous thoughts of hard working minds really has done a lot for my quality of life and my ability to understand how I can better serve my world.
Lex and Andrew Huberman are the only Podcasters I've known that I can bring into a warm bath with me and not feel as though I am being interrupted... indeed I feel I'm actually in good and enriching company. I may be adding Tyler to the mix...

fire episode. learning so much. thank you gentleman
love his comment on contemporary art. very well said.
Well done Lex. This was one of the best podcasts ever made.
In the same way The Beatles White Album seems underproduced, this podcast seemed effortless but was far more complicated and perfect that one might realise. Well done.
@Elias Håkansson I'm not saying the podcast is underproduced
Well, Tyler is a real boost to my optimism. Thank glob for Lex as a counterpoint.
I listened this conversation in the audio format, and throughout the whole thing, I thought Tyler was the guy who voiced Brother Jauffre in Oblivion. Loved the conversation!
Thank you Tyler. Thanks Lex. I enjoyed the good thinking.
being real Lex it's an amazing quality among friends, enjoyment, enriching, faint whisper of sadness and the joy of recollection override , Quality time, know the first, don't waist the second, evil is waiting on instruction and translating in real time till habits are built and then the self is gone, life innocence like water nourishes, yin and yang, the dot is the purity of the opposite mass, destroy one to take the other but what's left

Great discussion and insightful information from the Humanity department. 🙂
Really moved by how sharp witted Tayler is. He'd make a great fireside chat companion. Every response is a quotable. I love his perspective on the world and economics.
Definitely checking out his podcast.
Thank you Lex.
Another gem of a conversation thank you fellas.
Upon listening to this and all your other fascinating guests on your podcasts Lex, the same question occurs to me time and time again..
Is my mind really as devoid of factual content as I feel it is after listening and reaping what knowledge I can from each guest, or are we each of us under an illusion of self-inadequacy each time we delve into ourselves?
However, there is one possible revelation about myself that I picked up from this particular conversation..
At least I now know that being thought of as "pretty weird" by the vast majority of my peers can't be altogether a bad thing. 😉👌
Thanks again, keep up the good work 🙏
Brilliant man I agree completely with Professor Cowen that innovation and rising productivity is very important for economic growth.
Funny guy 😂😂. Crystal clear, logical, understandable and honest answers to every single question. Great interview, informative, interesting, and easy to listen to.
FABULOUS FABULOUS interview. Lex you are the best. And Tyler is just so unbelievably smart and FUNNY!!!

Lex, noticed your tweets are getting a lot of love from Elon, happy to see your success. Also, don't do a startup.
Mostly selfish reasons for me to enjoy his content. But also for him too. He has done more to change the world with his podcast than his github profile or any code he has written. But I know he needs to be uncomfortable and challenged and wants to integrate love and robots in our world, and manage teams and grow as an individual but if his goal is change the world with love, I bet I see this podcast quantifiably going further than the off-chance his startup becomes a unicorn that changes the world more than this podcast. Most likely he'll be successful...his company will get sold and turned into a widget/module/library to something bigger and he'll get a big payday which will depress him since he doesn't care about money. And he'll lose all that time stressing and growing a company etc etc. just seems like the bigger his voice becomes, the bigger the opportunity cost is for a startup. Just my two cents.
@@victorpinheiro1901 obviously but opinions and debate are also allowed
Full disclosure, I don't have admin privileges over Lex's neural net, he can make his own probabilistic decisions from the dataset.
@@lickissbrittany , Ha, Ha, true. But I think your selfish reasoning has merit in this case.
@@lickissbrittany I had similar thoughts about Lex, he has a unique ability to bring interesting people to the public eye and to share ideas. He is also very good at doing this, has anyone ever made a successful startup by saying that they want to build a startup? Most successful people probably had a specific goal or vision as opposed to the idea of starting a business.
Come on Lex, you know what episode we really want you to post !!

Lex, do you intend to do Conversations with Tyler? I find both of you fascinating.
Excellent discussion!
referring to the China government as the CCP, I like this guy...
It's interesting to me how little modern people know about modern artists- The layman is still stuck in Michelangelo & Da Vinci's time- But there are hundreds of new artists who would quite literally blow them out of the water. Not to mention the artists who explore even more difficult styles; like stylized form that still reflects anatomy we can understand- Impressionism used in the context of design (the simplest/fewest brush strokes necessary to communicate a given concept). If you spend some time in the concept art world, you begin to see that Michelangelo was just the tip of a massive iceberg.

‘An iceberg of loneliness’: you have you’re own poetry Lex, appreciate your shows! Loved this comment.
It makes sense that we’d be as fragmented as the icebergs floating free from home, their future shattered.
Their fate, our own?.. Slowly melting and becoming less, ice..? May the future flow like water.
Almost forgot, Cowen is a well paid right wing hack, way to suck up to these guys like your hero rogan. Ya’ll keep showing the world how your views deserve ridicule. By your logic I should just lay down and die. Because I’m not moving to North Dakota to Frack when I’m in my 40’s just because I had no kids... are you insane Tyler... that was rhetorical. It’s obvious your love. And how badly these guys are responsible for our warming planet and out of control inequality. I’ve been quiet but I am not blind.
Poignant comments carrying weight. Love.
Thank you for the example you set man. This has been more impactful on my mentality then Rogan and I feel he was the podcast “gateway drug”
