  • Penelope, Reid Park Zoo's female reticulated giraffe, welcomed her first calf on January 15 - Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The newcomer measured approximately 6 feet tall at birth and is the first giraffe born at the Zoo in nearly 24 years. In the wild, the number of giraffes is disappearing rapidly, which makes this birth even more special. Penelope and her mate Jasiri had a breeding recommendation from the Giraffe Species Survival Plan, which will provide input into their future. Zoo staff is allowing the public to vote for a name for the calf on its website. Mom and calf can be seen on habitat a few times a day for short periods as the youngster acclimates to his new environment.
