  • America's Revolutionary War was raging 235 years ago when Marquis de Lafayette sailed from France aboard the Navy frigate Hermione to deliver good news to his friend George Washington. On this Independence Day, a replica of the famous ship is in New York City as part of the Fourth of July celebrations. David Begnaud reports.

    Wealthiest and most well connected teenagers in France decides at 19 he is going to fight for Washington although they did not want him and King Louis forbade him. So he bought his own boat and after the French navy came after him he parked in Spain and rode back to France then dressed as a woman and rode back to his ship.
    When he got here he fought for free and in his first battle was wounded and still stayed to order an orderly retreat. He fed and clothed soldiers with his own money and while injured returned to France (where he was now a celeb) and secured Frances support .

    But, on the flip side, this ship's sister, La Concorde, was a Dutch-style French slaver captured by Blackbeard himself & had more cannon's added...then renamed, " Queen Anne's Revenge"! It's being salvaged off the Carolinas now. It is the same ship he was finally killed on by a British lieutenant. Beheaded, in point of fact.

    • @wattana62
      @wattana62 Před 7 lety +20

      It's totally wrong ; it was the same name but not the same ship.
      "La Concorde", Hermione's sister ship, was built in April 1777 in Rochefort, France ; she was the first of its own, reason why, her name is the name of the class (Concorde-class frigate). A military class frigate, so this class was warships, not slave ships...
      The ship "La Concorde", used by Blackbeard, was also built in France but in 1710. She was from an older class of frigate ships (and not a state military class). She was captured by Blackbeard in 1717.

      "Shortly after blockading Charleston harbor in May 1718, and refusing to accept the Governor's offer of a pardon, Blackbeard ran Queen Anne's Revenge aground while entering Beaufort Inlet. A deposition given by the former captain of Adventure, David Herriot, states "Thatch's [Teach's] ship Queen Anne's Revenge run a-ground off of the Bar of Topsail-Inlet." He also states that Adventure "run a-ground likewise about Gun-shot from the said Thatch" in an attempt to kedge Queen Anne's Revenge off the bar.[8] Teach then disbanded his flotilla and escaped by transferring supplies onto the smaller sloop, Adventure." -Wikipedia

      You're right : next time, we won't lift a finger if that's just altruism. EVERYTHING in history of men is a matter of interests. Sometimes (read "EVERY TIME"), it's good to analyse not only the main reasons but also their consequences. If France and Spain hadn't taken part in that revolutionary war, who knows what would have happened to the Thirteen Colonies ... so maybe people can be civilised, just say "thanks" and move on ?

      And that's for exactly the same geopolitical interests that USA enter (nearly at the end) WW2. Not for altruism

    Seems like some French classes may be needed there… no grammar, no vocabulary, just pronunciation!
    And French, as ever, as modest as the size of the flag!

      The flag comes from the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle. But historically it's much bigger! The size of the flag is defined by the proportions of the ship. A 74-gun therefore has a larger flag.
      Here it's too small.

      It's all fun and games until someone loses a leg! Seriously, if there were cannonballs with a service charge (standard powder charge for a gun, about 8 oz for a 6-pounder) it could fracture a hull or turn you into spare body parts.

      annnnd why do you think that is? You think they're going to load full live rounds with the full firing charge behind it, in a populated U.S harbor? Are you daft?
