A Mako is a type of shark. A Maiko (My-Co) is an apprentice Geisha. That's how you get the play on words and 'Secret My Lips' becomes 'Secret Maiko Lips'. Yes, The Fan Game, Tohsenkyo. The points are scored by how the fan lands. Saiki scored 8 points. And that instrument is the Shamisen.
Thanks for the reaction! So, from what I've gathered is, April 1st, 2018, Band Maid changed all their social media and YT channel to Band Maiko. Also, they changed their names too. They put out a statement that this was their new direction. It works because as geisha in training, maiko played instruments, danced, and performed songs. It went over so well that in 2019, the Maids released 7 song EP. 6 songs (including Secret Maiko Lips) were Band Maid originals, transformed musically and with Kyoto-dialect lyrics. These five new songs weren't just slapping some traditional sounds over the original like Secret Maiko Lips. The last song was "Gion-cho", which is exclusively a Maiko original. There is a MV on their channel for this song. The next thing you can listen to, is Band Maid acoustic. They did a Christmas okyu-ji in 2021. Again, they reconstructed their songs where sometimes you only had 2 members performing. On their YT channel, check out "Sayonakidori", this one has Miku taking over with lead vocals and accompanied by only MISA (bass) and Akane (drums). 🤘
👘 On April 1st, 2018 BAND-MAID announced on their social media that they were changing their focus and would be re-branding as "BAND-MAIKO".
Then they released this video.
At the end of the day they stated they had changed their minds, and would be reverting back to "BAND-MAID". : )
One cool thing is that Miku changed the dialect of their singing and modified the lyrics to use the traditional dialect and phrasing from the old Capital of Kyoto that is identified with Geisha culture.
Kanami worked with their sound engineer to add virtual traditional instruments.
BTW, a maiko is an apprentice geiko in Kyoto and Western Japan. That's the regional equivalent to a geisha.
You'll probably like 'Gion-cho'. It's the featured single on the BAND-MAIKO mini-album that also contains Maiko versions of several BAND-MAID songs, including this one.
Although she is from Kumamoto, Miku is very fond of Kyoto and visits it whenever she can.
In BAND-MAIKO, she is known as 鳩子 (Hatoko), like "Kobato", that's another version of "small pigeon".
Saiki = 富士姫 Fujiki.
Kanami = 叶笑 Kanoemi.
Misa = 梅美沙 Umemisa.
Akane = 紅月 Akatsuki.
Hatoko's shodō (calligraphy) at the beginning said "World Domination".
Nice to meet you. I always enjoy looking at your works.
I am Japanese and I would like to explain the lyrics used in this song.
(I try to comment on Band-Maiko's reactions with this explanation, so I know some of you guys who read this comment section have already read it somewhere else, but I'll post it here as well.)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In all the songs of BAND-MAIKO, Saiki uses the word called "京ことば Kyo-kotoba (Kyoto dialect)".
The Kyo-kotoba has many special phrases that are different from the so-called "Kansai-ben (Kansai region dialect. Kyoto is included in the Kansai region)", and even if you are from Kyoto, it is not a word that ordinary people other than maiko and geisha use on a daily basis.
Many maiko are not from Kyoto, but when working as a maiko in Kyoto, it is not desirable to use the dialect of the region in which they were born and raised.
Therefore, the training content of Maiko includes the acquisition of this Kyo-kotoba.
The Kyo-kotoba is, so to speak, a "common language" for maiko and geisha.
※ "Maiko (Pronunciation is my-ko)" means a person in the apprenticeship stage of Geiko (Geisha).
The Japanese instrumental sounds used are
三味線 Shamisen
A Shamisen is a three-stringed traditional Japanese musical instrument derived from the Chinese instrument sanxian. It is played with a plectrum called a Bachi.
琴 Koto
Japanese stringed instrument that resembles a zither; has a rectangular wooden sounding board and usually 13 silk strings that are plucked with the fingers.
和太鼓 Wadaiko
Japanese drums.
尺八 Shakuhachi
A shakuhach is a Japanese longitudinal, end-blown flute that is made of bamboo.
篠笛 Shinobue
A traditional Japanese woodwind instrument, that is a simple bamboo cross flute made of thin bamboo called shinodake with a hole for blowing into and a finger hole in the mouth.
However, in fact, the actual instruments are not used, but rather the composer/guitarist KANAMI typed the sounds of the Japanese traditional instruments.
Fun reaction once again to Band Maid’s arch nemesis. I think the competition is so fierce that they never appear together in the same room!
The fan throwing game is the Japanese version of horseshoes: Tōsenkyo. There’s a big chart with all the different outcomes and possible points.
They played this song for us at the 2023 Charlotte okiyuji. Hearing Kanami seamlessly switch from hard rock to jazz in a live performance was really cool.
For your own enjoyment, there’s a behind the scenes video of the making of this.
Fujiki knocked the choh off the makura, with it landing on the snow side.
The fan was resting nicely on the makura.
8 points!
The traditional stringed instrument is a shamisen
Somehow you missed the key moment in the eating shot in the video... they're all staring at you, as you pointed out, which I'm guessing is some sort of Japanese politeness thing where you're not supposed to eat with people watching or something? The fun part is that Akane just sort of says to heck with it, and shoves a huge pile of noodles into her mouth, while the others are still staring. Going with the whole branding of Akane as the gorilla who is always eating. :)
Thank you continuing to follow the Maids. Band-Maiko's 7 song EP is AMAZING! Here's the line up, with 6 covers and 1 Band-Maiko original:
Secret My Lips --> Secrect Maiko Lips
One and Only --> Tora and Tora
YOLO --> Yolosiosu
Anemone --> Ansan
Awkward --> Akasimahen
Screaming --> Screamingu
Gion-cho - Band-Maiko Original has OMV on Band-Maid's YT Page
Keep enjoying the journey... Maybe it's time for rock ballad. "Daydreaming" OMV a masterpiece. Or how about a two-for "Manners" and "Black Hole". Two completely different feels...the first, a bluesy/groovy song. The second a chaotic speed demon of your journey into a black hole. At 220bpms, currently their fastest song in their portfolio. PO!🕊 🤘😆🤘
Watch GION-CHO (I probably spelled that incorrectly) by Band Maiko also, I actually like it better. They also have a mini EP that's very good for sale. Best rock band on the planet.
As always, great reaction and comments. IMHO Gion-Cho is even more impressive. These MAIKOs can do no wrong. Cheers!
The folding fan game is a traditional game. Think indoor horseshoes. Scoring can be very complicated though.
Part of the he reason thr vocals are more forward is because its a whole new vocal track. They rewrote the lyrics into the Kensai dialect used in Osaka (where Geisha houses are still prominent), then re-recorded it.
Band-Maiko is the flip side of of the awesome coin that's Band-Maid! Try "Gion Cho" from Band-Maiko, the only original song from them.
The Maids are not only masters at genre melding, transitions, riff production, structure and execution... they are also masters of cultural melding. Maidiacs are MAIKOACS, too! 😆Thx, Mr. Chaos!
Band-Maiko did do *one song* that wasn't a Band-Maid cover: "Gion-cho"
Fun reaction! An all-woman jazz fusion group covered a Tower of Power classic What is Hip? many times, but once with a Shamisen. They may be in the US right now, minus the Shamisen sadly. Tokyo Groove Jyoshi czcams.com/video/tA8PKx09ao8/video.html
