I can recall meeting both Mr. Harris & Sandy Pattie in the late 80's as a young Royal Ranger, when they had a 'concert' for us kids & the parents of our church. The earlier part of the day was filled with events -- like soapbox derbys, where you whittle your little race cars out of wood & race them for prizes... Mr. Harris had been walking around, just watching & meandering about. He wasn't quite as "well known" as he is today -- so in actuality, he almost looked 'lost' there -- even to the kid that I was. BUT...I remember him stopping me from building my car, asking me all about it. As I was describing how I was building my car -- they called 'time' on us. Mine wasn't "finished" (meaning, made to look like a hot-wheels yet), so I was annoyed with him because the event was timed. Lol... Fast forward to later that evening...and I saw that same guy on stage, playing the piano -- & singing like an Angelic being. Blew my 'little kid' mind. I thought he was just another boring parent! But the way he played and sang...stuck with me. I took up playing the keyboard for that very reason. (Shout-out to Roland keyboards!) ...I never did become a 'public artist' however. Because...my 'why' had NOTHING to do with gaining any notoriety. I just wanted to bear my heart through music...like that guy that took the time to notice & talk to me -- while almost everyone else seemed unaware of my presence. ~ By the way: when I look back? I can (now) recall being about the only little brown kid around. And...he noticed. And cared. (Arizona, 1986.)
