    My deepest condolences to Cory.
I was the first person the family saw after the person is discovered. I am a retired police officer from a big city.
I am so thankful you are speaking about this. I hated these calls, I had to be the one who told the family why I was there.
I don’t have any answers, I know my fellow officers have too much experience with this.

The driving analogy is a good one and a good place to start. The act of courtesy to let someone in front of you can literally change that persons whole day and in so doing can have an effect on everyone else they meet along the way. It's just as easy to spread good will as it is to spread ill will. It's our conscious choice. Thanks for producing this.

This was a very important video for everone to watch. We all need to look after mental health, take a moment, talk to someone you trust, get a new perspective on what may seem a sittuation without solution. As the saying goes, "Suicide is a perminant solution to a temporary problem.". It is never the right choice but there is no shame in saying "look I'm not doing well, can we talk about this issue on my mind". Take a break and give yourself a break. There are lots of people who love you & want you to stick around. Rest in this life.

Wow! Great suggestions. I’m so sorry for your loss Cory. This is my passion, as well, to help others who struggle with depression. You’re right about pilots not wanting to tell anyone. I’m a student pilot and I went through an act of congress to get my medical because 20+ years ago I was suicidal. Yet, I would hope that anyone (pilot or not) would not let anything hinder them from getting help. Reach out! Buddy checks! Show love and kindness! And just know - There is always hope for a better tomorrow!

Thanks to Cory for being open about this.
I had one of my Airman commit suicide several years back. We did everything we could, including military mental health clinic, etc. He ended up doing it anyway.
But what you call your "inner circle," your close trusted friends, I call "the Bro Network." I've never been suicidal, but I have "struggled," and my Bros were what got me through it. Because I opened up to them and asked for help. It wasn't easy, but it was the best thing I could have done. Now I try to pay back in to my Bro Network whenever I can.

  • @n3roc
    @n3roc Před 3 lety +4

This ranks as one of the best taking-off episodes ever! Cory touched on non-disclosure and non-treatment for emotional problems because disclosure or treatment would cause so, so many pilots to lose their medicals.
Also, I can relate to Cory’s loss because I lost my son on November 4th 2018 at 5am. I take an antidepressant and was ready to solo, but the FAA wanted a full HIMS medical evaluation to get my class 3 medical and I just didn’t have the $7,000 to get my medical. (I passed the medical part with flying colors)The sad thing is, i seem to be doing quite well on this antidepressant and I assume if I were off of it my flight skills may worsen? (But I want to be clear that I would never, ever, ever do anything unsafe or try to sabotage an airplane I was flying) And the process is very confusing and I need a HIMS AME. The closest one is 225 miles away. The HIMS Neuro-Cognitive psychologist is 100 miles away and the HIMS psychiatrist is 300 miles away. I was also told the FAA may deny my medical even though all my tests were fine. In that case, I was told that a flight lawyer could help me with that. I didn’t ask how much that might be! In the end, I’m sitting here on the ground looking-up.
Is my problem unusual? Could taking-off have an episode about this?

Our family recently lost the little guy on the left to cancer at just 3 and it has left many people struggling and as you say we set each other up to always say we are OK, when we are not.. Moving on from here I will change, your advice is so right. Again you are so right anyone in aviation with a struggle is so afraid to share for fear of the repercussions yet a little help now will prevent escalation. Fantastic segment. Thanks for sharing, Cory, and thanks for doing this, Dan. In the Air Force, we’ve made a huge transition towards discussing mental health up and down the leadership change and are still in the midst of overcoming the stigma of losing your career for reaching out for help. We have quarterly meetings that are mandatory, and most people come out of them with something gained. I always feel a little more healed afterwards. Can’t urge everyone more to use kindness and really try to care more, especially for people they feel at odds with. You NEVER know who needs help. Thanks again for this!

Thank You Dan, for allowing Cory to share with us what is obviously a very painful event. I think that eventually suicide touches the lives of everyone at some point in their lives. Unfortunately the stigma attached to any form of mental health issues seems to be especially pronounced with professional, regulated, licensed individuals! Nobody wants to lose the ability to do what they enjoy and or make a living doing. Thank You both for having this conversation, maybe others might feel a little more comfortable with having these types of discussions.

FAA should not have penalties by pulling someones ticket or medical for a pilot seeking help with mental health or struggles for one alot of pilots use flying as a out to take their minds off of lifes problems and issues it's one of a few things that may be keeping them from dark places. If anything they should be helping with information of places to go for help as well as a list of meds ok to use for some if needed but most ppl really just need to talk to someone or group of peers that will lend a ear as well as help when needed.

My prayers are with Cory and his family. What a great, kind voice he is for aviation. This is such a great topic. I think the FAA is at fault for forcing to pilots to forego treatment that could have saved lives. FAA also prohibits so many Americans from becoming pilots. Flying is therapeutic and for some who love it so much, it would be part of their treatment.

Thank you for this discussion.....it needed to happen...and welll done. Suicide has affected me personally ..lost two school friends since graduation and most recently a church family member. Now I have a signal( code word) with my wife if I have a friend in a " rough patch" it allows me to stay with them " as long as nessasary" to help.Jjust knowing someone cares makes a difference. Used it twice in the last two years. Great video men.

Cory, we have never met but I truly am sorry for your loss. Dan, tuff subject but it shouldn’t be, we as a society need to understand that mental illness is no different then a broken leg with the exception that you can’t hide a broken leg. Cory has always presented himself as a true Gentleman, it’s funny that he mentioned going back to the 40s. I lived in Utah for five years ( still have family there ) and there was a expression that went “ welcome to Utah set your clock back 200 years “ seeing how things are going in the world maybe setting it back a bit isn’t a bad idea.
