    There was no one in it, it was remotely controlled hence the guy in the back. If you screenshot and zoom in you can see the seat empty

      No "remote control" needed, you simply pin both drive levers with something to stay in the forward position.
      You can see the operator standing next to the excavator at 0:00

    That almost happened to me one time in a dozer. I was pushing dirt down the side of a mountain to feed it to the loader below. I got real close to the edge showing off. When the dirt fell away from my blade and all I saw was air all I could think was, you just f'ed up. I through the dozer in reverse and it slowly crawled backward up the hill to a flat plateau. When I got up on the plateau I got out of the dozer and shook for about 10 minutes.

    this is a remote vehicle that was at end of life. this was done on purpose, hence the camera guy in the right spot and happened to be filming. No one was hurt and it was good fun. The guy behind it with the remote is my cousin

    I'm licensed to operate heavy equipment and this piece of equipment is being controlled remotely. The tractor is actually old and out dated.

    This probably wasn't staged unless they purposely wanted it to look like an operator crashing to his death at first glance - which was what I initially thought happened, and if that's the case - NOT COOL. Being an operator, and having to operate in dangerous conditions, falling off a ledge to your death is our primary fear. Every time we have to make a difficult climb and crest over onto the top, or make an extremely steep descent - you had better believe puckering is going on.
    If they were going to matter of factly just crash it then the remote operator could have just turned it in place and crawled off.

    It was being driven remotely by the guy standing behind it, who was likely fired shortly after.
