  • The video discusses Girish Karnad's Hayavadana, a play published in 1971. The play tells the story of two friends who are in love with the same woman. Devadatta and Kapila, are the major figures o the novel. Padmini is their love interest eventually Devadatta marries her. Devadatta is a man of intellect and Kapila possesses attracted physical appearance. Devadatta is insecure about his appearance and thinks that Padmini likes Kapila. Likewise, both Padmini and Kapila are attracted to each other. When the two visit the temple, Devadatta kills himself. Soon after Kapila dies. Padmini cries aloud to Kali, the goddess. She commands Padmini to place their heads on their respective bodies. Padmini accidentally swaps the heads of the two friends. The narrative also tells the story of a man with a horse's head who seeks to become human.
    Girish Karnad drew the plot of Hayavadana from the inspiration from Thomas Mann's novella The Transposed Heads in 1940. Karnad integrates Yakshagana (a dance-drama of South India, associated most strongly with the state of Karnataka) into his plays Hayavadana, Tughlaq, and Nagamandala.
    Girish Karnad b. 1938 d. 2019 was an Indian actor, film director, Kannada writer, and playwright. He worked in Kannada, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Marathi films.
