- This is a bit different to the other reworked Unreal tracks on CZcams. I love listening to the remixes people have done, but for this video I took the original tracks straight from the game and remastered them using various high end audio plugins. So they're the same tracks we know and love from the game, but now they sound better than ever before.
I was pretty blown away by how good the remasters sound, I hope it takes you right back and immerses you in that amazing game once again...

Just to make this album a little more fresh and new, I've included two of my own original tracks that were inspired by the Unreal soundtrack.
I do not own the copyright to this recording (except for tracks 7 and 10)
This original music is by Alexander Brandon and Michiel van den Bos. You can find Alexander Brandon on Bandcamp - some great solo releases, and both guys are still making game soundtracks. - Hudba
There's discussions and hopefully plans to breathe new life into this score and properly release it. So many people have put great effort into things like this, I'll need to scour CZcams and elsewhere to make sure either the content is used in some way or credited.
I have a question... the Sunspire bit does not sound familiar. I'm quite fond of it but don't remember it being written for the game! Was this indeed a .UMX??

Glad you like the remaster, and good to hear you've got plans to do a new release! Definitely a score worthy of some remaster treatment. I did my best although I didn't have good monitors at the time. You're welcome to use my work, would be an honour to be involved. The Sunspire track is one of my own tracks, I just included it here because it's heavily influenced by your work, and I thought it fit in nicely. You're welcome to use that one as well and credit me.
I grew up playing Unreal, Unreal Tournament & Deus Ex and they have some of the most awesome soundtracks ever and I still listen to them today. The menu theme of Deus Ex is the greatest menu theme of any games I have played. My mom who is not a gamer and has never played Deus Ex can recognize the theme any time she hears it because it's so unique and memorable. Thank you and Michiel van den Bos for such an awesome soundtrack!

I fell in love with this game forever just when I stepped out of the wrecked spaceship and looked up at the sky. Now I'm 46 old and I have a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes when I remember this moment.
Same. The environments may have been alright for the time, but they're just huge flat empty spaces. There's 1 tree, a few rocks, and huge polygons for floors. But even so, it's magic thru and thru. There hasn't been a game like it since
I've always largely attributed it to the music. Screamtracker or whatever it's called, the same stuff they used in Deus Ex and Jazz Jackrabbit 2 is awesome, but the composer of Unreal's tracks is a genius. The music of when you arrive at the Na Pali Haven and the second half of the Sun Spire get my emotions going every time, especially when I'm playing the game and not just listening to the music though. So I guess it has to be both!

Hard to believe Unreal is over 20 years old now. Still one of my favourite games of all time, and the music is such a big part of that. So many modern games have completely forgettable music.
I really dig the new tracks! They fit in quite well with the rest while still bringing something fresh and new.

This is pure magic, the game is pure magic. It hurts my feelings not so many people know Unreal other than the Engine, most don't even know there was a game called Unreal behind it. But at the same time I feel privileged to be one of the few who had the wonderful experience of playing it when it first came out. It's like we're a secret select group who knows the truth.
I second this. I tell my fellow gamers to look it up. It's a real game more times than I can remember.
This game DESERVES a remake/remaster.
The same vision and feel of the game (and of course the sound design and music style) but remade with modern technology would be amazing.
Such remasters are pretty popular right now, so we could hope that Unreal gets that treatment some day!

@@ditditlord5153 There is a community, which still making maps, and campaigns for Unreal Gold, its on www.unrealsp.org. I also have a project, and my friends are still about to make cooperative maps to Unreal 98.

All his additions are only to make the levels more immersive and atmospheric - he streams on youtube from time to time. I personally love how the maps are filled with life and (nali) history.
Takes me back! In those days, MIDI soundtracks were the norm, and though they were nice, stepping out into the beautiful world of Unreal with this magnificent score on the background was nothing short of a revelation! Thanks for this remaster!
Loving the new tracks.
A lot of people say they fell in love with Unreal when they saw the waterfall after leaving the Vortex Rikers. I fell in love with the game during the Serpent Canyon sequence, and that was 100% because of the music
That was one of my favourite parts for sure. I fell in love with it when I stepped out the crashed ship at the beginning. It was the combination of the music and the scenery, the sky in Unreal looked really stunning to me at the time. Good times...

The game Unreal 1998 was like the adventurous it ever created and it looked like a labyrinth which gave me 10 hours to compete

I used to return to this moment all the time during this game, just that sheer beauty of floating through those desolate canyons and inside the caves, seeing coronas of light popping up and floating by as the little boat sails to the windmill. Absolutely magical.
Yeah, yeah, the part when the player exit the Vortex Rikers and see the scenery and stuff is awesome indeed but DAMN the Rajigar mines with it's deep melancholic soundtrack (sounds fantastic in this remastered version tho!) and the part when the lights slowly turn off one by one and the first Skaarj attacking the player IS THE MOMENT that made Unreal so great and unforgettable for me that it still gives me goosebumps every time I listen to this OST
And by the way and with really no offense, your tracks are similar in melodies BUT the biggest part of the Unreal OST's charm and character is in the sounds they used to build those tracks and yours are pretty far in terms of "feel" from the original ones, not to mention those tracks are much more powerful and therefore not fitting in the atmosphere of the originals. But those are as close as one can get to the original soundscapes after 20 years tho :)
Before he left, CliffyB wanted Epic to do a remake of Unreal.

This is the game that deserves a remake the most.
Its really time for a complete authentic 1in1 Unreal remake in Unreal Engine 4, with this musics.

Actually, I think that part of the charm is the original engine itself. It is something about the way it works with color palettes and textures that give it a unique charm. The new engines are "too perfect". What we really need is a new game made in that original engine with a music from the same author, just like when they recently released a new Build engine game. We need to use those old engines just like when artists deliberately use old canvases.
Try useing HD textures, dx11 renderer, and reshader. It makes the game feel it is remastered.

The problem with these new engines is all games built on them look the same. Gone are the days of distinct art styles, nows everyone is using same tools and workflows.
Tracker Music never die... never... Great songs. I remember they were in .S3M format.
Recently put some time aside to replay through this masterpiece & I was still in awe at how well everything still holds up. Can't believe I only just now discovered this remaster.
It does not include my favourite track: The Sunspire level. That one deserves an orchestral reinterpretation.
But the whole collection did bring me a lot of great memories. Unreal was the first game I fired up on a new PC: a 300Mhz ,128 Mb RAM, with 6Gb hard disk a RIVA TNT graphics card... AND the best part of that system the SoundBlaster Audigy that made this game stand out. Then UT99, Thief, Half life and Deus Ex came out... I squeezed many hours of fun from that humble Win98 machine.
SAME holy moly... the only diference was, Pentium 2 400mhz and RivaTnT2 also Sound blaster live and was amazing times ^_^
Yes, I really love the music sequence three quarters through the Sunspire track which is so powerful.
Note that the image of the Goddess Vandora in the temple shows that she has a human face and not Nali, although she has four arms and four breasts. There is a theory that states that Vandora was a human who a long time before prisoner 849 (actually the prisoner, see that the main character of the game is a woman) landed in Na Pali, must have landed with her ship on the planet and entered in friendly contact with the Nali. Her dealings with the Nali people led them to consider herself as a Goddess associated with lightning, perhaps due to some weapon or energy artifact she used or her ship had.

In my humble opinion the best theme of the Unreal soundtrack is the theme of the Temple of Vandora. And look that everyone is great. This theme evokes all the mystery and enigma that is behind the image of the Goddess of Lightning Nali, Vandora.

-Gateway to Na Pali, I really enjoy this track. It's a really good one! The beginning of it is amazing! Then comes the part at like 3:08 which is really amazing! I love this track! It's relaxing, but it's like, it keeps you on task in a sense! Then 3:50... OMG! I love this part! 4:08 goes back to the beginning part which is really nice!

-YES! Night Vision! This fast-paced track! I really like the beginning of it! Then it slows down for a bit then enters 13:18 which I really like! It's like a machine kind of feeling!

Thanks for the feedback! Yes, A Dream of Sunspires is one of my tracks heavily influenced by Alexander Brandon's style. I don't think I had heard the beta Sky City before, that's pretty cool. I found a page with downloads of the whole beta soundtrack so I'll be listening to all of it...

The nali boat map. Low intensity maps like that one really helped the world building.

THIS GAME DESERVES a full comeback in the UNREAL ENGINE 5.1. This must make a return entirely.
Martin, sincerely, Thank you for having remixed these legendary tracks in perfect good taste..Oh my God , you won't believe what an amazing creative atmosphere this collection generates for some of us. Please please keep doing Great Work like this; it reaches fucking deep for those of us who are on a journey to restore Soul back to the presently much-too-streamlined (therefore lifeless) timeline.
30:35 This part of the track is the essence of Unreal: foreboding, yet hopeful, like yeah it's hard and there's a lot to go through, but you've put so much work and there's a light at the end of the tunnel. The lower tempo is a nice touch too.
I absolutely would love there to be an Unreal re-master (game) with refreshed music like this in it. But the re-master absolutely must keep the game intact, just focusing on the visual and audible aspects. Modern games with all the hand-holding breaks the immersion, the thing that made Unreal so special is that feeling that you are absolutely alone on this mysterious planet, with Inca/Aztec style temples, the Nali's, so strange, so Unreal! The fact that the closest you come to another human is where you hear the Skarj warrior ripping apart that poor person inside the ship is immense. If they ever re-made this game, but added some lame rubbish like 'you wake up, to be greeted by some ex-prisoner on the ship, who explains everything to you' that would be terrible. I guess that the diaries that you find with your translator could be updated to provide audio-logs, but they'd have to make sure the audio logs are believable, ie; not everyone has an American accent etc, this is space, in a strange future.

You know, this makes me think. You know what the demoscene is? It's a very small program designed to showcase the graphical and audio capabilities of the computer hardware. Usually they're really small, we're talking 64kb small. So they procedurally generated the graphics and audio to save space.
These demoscenes used tracker music, what you're hearing right now.
I heard the makers of unreal worked with a demoscene group, iirc it was the future crew, the creators of second reality demo. I could be wrong though, but they did work with someone.
Now, i'm kind of wondering, how involved these guys were in creation of unreal engine itself? It could be just the tracker software, but something tells me it wasn't just that.

my favorite unreal game ... this game is trully majestic... so does the music or the gameplay... played arround my 6s and i really got scared from time to time... was so wuss that my dad had to help me sometimes XD Dayum, good old times!!

Man, you could include those songs in Deus Ex 1 today and people would still think they're part of the original game.
I always knew the soundtrack was good, even listening to it back in the late 90's on some crappy speakers, then started hearing all the layers on good headphones, but this just takes it a few levels higher.

Entonces no soy el único que encuentra estos tema, misteriosos, profundos, oscuros, distantes, desolados, desconocidos. Me cuesta muchísimo describir lo que me hace sentir el soundtrack del Unreal. Y estoy muy interesado en encontrar musica similar. Pero no estaria teniendo suerte. ME refiero a encontrar algun genero musical (real no de computadora) que tenga los mismos elementos. ¿Musica tribal quizas? Lo que me fascina es esa mezcla de futuro con pasado.... esa fusion de una cultura desconocida con tecnologia ancestral. Algo que parece super viejo pero tiene un poder y capacidades muy avanzadas.

Unfortunately no, these are the only ones I had time to do properly. I dabbled with one or two other tracks but didn't get good enough results to include them.
Your tracks are solid, but there is one key difference between your track and unreal’s (which you do a good job of handling by the way, just something to be aware of IMO).
Unreal track doesn’t loiter on particular beats, constantly replaying it over and over. Unlike regular techno/electronic style music, the beats in unreal aren’t redundant/repetitive. (There is always a tune that is changing/evolving.) It plays a beat and then moves onto the next with minimal repetition. It’s always flowing forward giving you a full experience without stalling (which is why I don’t get bored listening to the unreal soundtrack if that makes sense).

Does Terraniux actually play in the game somewhere? When it first started playing it really caught me off guard because of how slow it is compared to the other songs, and I don't remember it offhand

I will hopefully do a video about how I do mastering. But here's the main plugins I used - Brainworx Masterdesk, Gullfoss (very nice intelligent EQ) fabfilter pro Q, saturn.

What happened to the Dusk Horizon fight music?
Night Vision's 2nd song is in the wrong tempo, as it doesn't play this slow ingame for me
In fact, there is a slim chance you activate some glitch or bug ingame that causes the song's 2nd part to slow down. Happened to me at least twice, but it had been Nyleve's Falls and Temple of Vandora in my case. But these happened in the original release version. It never happened in Gold version.
I do really think that the atmosphere for the game was kind of dazzling and makes you craving for each inch advanced.... hove they restart the concept with fresher ideas

Now if only we can get fucking Sweeney to sign off on producing a remake or remaster to Unreal itself, and bring back the same artists who developed the OST. That would basically be my one-dying-wish if I could have just one thing I could wish for within the realm of possibility.

In December 2022 EPIC has taken down all the Unreal and Unreal Tournament games from digital storefronts. You can't legally obtain these games any more. An ultimate F-U to their legacy and people who grew up on it. Sad.
