  • Want to know how brain-computer interfaces actually work? This video goes over the methods that neurotechnologists use to turn brain data into commands a computer or a machine can understand. We cover data collection, processing, filtering, analysis, how to generate an action in a device, asynchronous BCIs that use population encoding, and synchronous BCIs that use P300, SSVEP, N100, and N400 signals. A little unsure of what all those terms actually mean? No worries! That is what the video is for :)
    Harrison and Colin (The BCI Guys) are neurotech researchers and entrepreneurs dedicated to creating a brain-controlled future! Neurotechnology and brain-computer interfaces are devices that allow users to control machines with their thoughts and interact with technology in new ways. This revolutionary technology will change life as we know it, and soon will be as common as the touchscreen on your smartphone. Join us in learning about the brain-controlled future!

    fantastic, it's not really imagining, the brain is the source of the signals (or transmitter) and the missing limbs are equivalent to receivers. Connect an artificial arm closes the circuit. you may be able to emulate sensing from the artificial limbs back to the brain and create a feedback link and a fully integrated system. The synchronisation aspect is fascinating. It seems the signalling protocol is far simpler than what comms systems use today, perhaps compensated by the number of neurons to keep the brain fast and efficient, any thoughts? Would love to explore more ideas with you guys if possible, spent many years working on dsp and comms system

    I'm currently taking my Masters in mechatronics/mechanical engineering in the UK, I'm looking to get into a career of research into BCI for prosthetic/exosuit applications and would liked to take a PhD relating to it. Do you guys have any tips or advice regarding this as well as what content to study and learn whilst I still possess my student e-library access. My Supervisor has suggested I write a review paper but I'm stumped on where to start.

    Why does desynchronization of neurons signal movement and not the synchronization of them. Shouldn't it be the other way around?

    • @BCIGuy
      @BCIGuy  Před 3 lety +1

      Synchronization produces bigger oscillations because neurons are firing together - if they are all during at the same time it is likely that they are not actively working on a task. When the wave is depressed (higher hz faster oscillations) the neurons are all working very quickly on all different tasks indicating high activity. So desync usually means activity and sync means it's in an idle state

      Build your own EEG - there are tutorials. If you can get access to a commercial headset there is a lot you can do with p300 based control systems. Depending on your technical capabilities you could do some assistive software for typing or control a robot thing

    are there any that improve iq or focus like magnetically shutting down certain areas so others can function more optimally?

    • @BCIGuy
      @BCIGuy  Před rokem +2

      Im not sure you’d want to be shutting down certain areas of the brain without a medical need. Certainly for people with mental health challenges like depression there are devices that can enhance or inhibit certain areas to try to correct what’s going wrong there. Or course, for someone who had ADHD or depression these interventions can have great cognitive benefits. For others right now the benefits are minor but there are people working in ultrasound stimulation, TMS, and TDCS devices that do this to some level

      @@BCIGuy Awesome! Thanks for the reply
      Ive also been curious about how brain chips could enhance processing power. How would that work? The brain sends a signal to the chip which is decoded (i understand this part), but then in what way would it process that, and how would it send the information back? to specific neuronal regions or?
      Like I can see images in my mind, but if i had a brain chip that enhanced visualization, then the signal would send from my mind to the chip, the chip would read that im likely thinking of a purple flower, and then it would process what a flower would look like and send back electric impulses to that neuronal region which produces a flower image in my mind, which would then enhance my visualization of it?

    • @williamdevonshire356
      @williamdevonshire356 Před rokem

      @@BCIGuy or maybe we could enhance intelligence by lightly stimulating the prefrontal cortex regions associated with impulse control and executive functioning.
      though that would just seem to enliven the neuronal network we already have in that area, but i havent been able to understand yet how we could expand the neuro network without enhancing cranial capacity, but by chip alone.

    • @davidvstadensa4552
      @davidvstadensa4552 Před 4 měsíci

      BCI technology is still pretty terrible at "writing" information to the mind. The brain is just far too complicated for us to understand exact processes and change them. We are only able to process some basic patterns and regional activity and nudge them in a certain direction. So no, we currently don't have the knowledge or means to do that. Our best guess is a ton of artificial synapses and a very powerful ML model. Another challenge when it comes to "writing" to the brain is it's plasticity. The brain is an ever changing and evolving system. To accurately depict and decipher all current and new connections (and even new neurons that form through Neurogenesis) we would have some serious deep diving to do. @@williamdevonshire356
