Chris Lilley's acting can't even be called acting because it is so believable I forget sometimes that his characters aren't real people. Best thespian in history.
I wish some of these deleted scenes made it into the show. The characters are a lot deeper than in the edited episodes; Gran becoming friendly with Penny, getting her a job (by lying) so they could become closer and then live together. There’s so many subtle suggestions they’re a couple both in what they say and in their body language. Gran is of the old world and would have been raised conservatively. She tried the “traditional” route and had a husband and children but it didn’t seem to work out for her. She would never be able to come out, the only option for her would be to work hard and live a quiet closeted life with a “housemate.” Maybe Gran doesn’t even know she’s gay, although in another deleted scene she did say to Taleb that women can ruin your life which suggests she had her hear broken in the past. If she does know she’s gay, which is most likely, the path she took in order to find love and live without fear of societal judgement is very poignant. I wish companies like Netflix would be braver and realise Chris Lilly’s shows are so far removed from comedies which just poke fun at stereotypes for cheap laughs.

I’m saying “Dope as Fuck!” to entertain myself around the house and “That’s so gay” which to me means silly or lame. Oops I forgot this video is about Gran and not Gavin. I love Gran. She reminds me of my grandma and great aunt teasing and giving shit to each other and to myself. Thank you, Chris, for sharing with us Australian culture but mostly the incredible people (yourself included) and those wonderful accents. I hope a trip to Australia is in my future!! Mr G, Asian mom, Jamie, and this lady are the funniest characters I’ve ever seen on TV. Chris Lilley is the kind of talent that when he shows up at an audition, you just leave because you know he’s the most talented actor/comedian in the room. Replace SNL with all Chris Lilley sketches.
