every time someone says that Sophia and Alex are greedy for asking for more money it comes across as kinda sexist and slightly delusional tbh. male celebrities will get paid way more than any of these women combined and people won’t think twice, but when a female celebrity asks to be paid a reasonable amount, using their male co celebrities payment as a reference, people start getting upset.
if you think that Alex and Sophia where getting paid too much money, you’re probably correct, but you also have to be just as upset about it when a male celebrity does it as you are at them. all I’m saying is most of these people don’t get mad at men when they ask for a reasonable raise. it’s an unrealistic and hypocritical standard to set.

500%!! This is a documented phenomenon, people react negatively when women ask for a raise, but for men it is expected! Sandberg's Lean In has some good tools to try and get round biases like this, but it's awful!

I wasn't aware of this situation at all before watching this and I was shocked that two hosts making millions for a company asking for a raise in itself was considered controversial??? Like of course they should ask for a raise! This definitely shows society's expectation of women to always be content with what is given to them and not daring to be a loud advocate for themselves.

Putting aside all of the petty drama, it’s absolutely wild that anyone would see two women working their a$$es off making millions of dollars for a company only to be paid literal PENNIES for their labor. And I’m not saying $400K is nothing. That’s life changing money. But making $400K while your boss and his company takes in $5Mil is so off the wall. This whole narrative was purely based on sexism because I know for a damn fact if Spotify didn’t pay Joe Rogan millions for his podcast, people would say Joe and his work was being taken advantage of. But women just have to be grateful for whatever they get.

I used to listen to CHD for a stint until I realized how bad it made me feel about myself. There was such a heavy focus on separating the conventionally “hot” woman and the “soft 5/hard 4” (average/conventionally unattractive woman). There was so much focus on the male gaze that it killed all aspects of empowerment for me, and sent me on a spiral of self-esteem issues.

Even though that shock value is what made them so popular, it left a bad taste in my mouth. I doubt this claim so much. Or to the level that Sofia claims. They both probably talked to guy friends and got content from there. Because one of Sofias ex boyfriends has also gone on to say the same thing about her. How multiple stories of hers were his. I also think it’s funny how if Alex actually did have a ghost writer Sofia literally never cared until this deal blew up in her face. Because had this not exploded the way it did, Sofia would have never once exposed this because Sofia and Alex benefitted off of everything shared with each other. She would have kept quiet and continued to benefit off this “ghost writer” forever, as long as she got her stacks.

They were carbon copies of the cliquey and ignorant popular girls in highschool. And just how generic and dull those popular girls were in highschool, CHD's views were incredibly boring and bland and not to mention laced in privilege with very heteronormative and misogynist expectations. There are far, far better AND funnier sex focused or even "girl talk"-esque podcasts out there. I feel like their popularity came from the fact they were bought up by Barstool's network so much of their audience was also men who wanted to watch them to see hot girls talk about dating & sex on a predominantly male/college bro network. They're women who are traditional in almost every conventional sense except *gasp* they talk about sex so Republican college bros eat that shit up, it's hilarious

but you never mentioned sofia’s side at allllll. she hasn’t talked about it a lot but she has talked about it in two episodes of her podcast. i think her points were valid tbh, she WROTE the show and they literally read from scripts because alex isn’t super witty or funny - which is apparent in the new episodes of chd. they didn’t do live shows or tour because alex refused and needed a script before going to the studio to film the podcast. also the sofia smear merch that barstool sports sold and alex promoted was pretty gross too. profiting from a friendship breakup and bullying the other person is just gross to me.
both girls kinda rub me the wrong way but i think to be fair alex and barstool sports really drove down this narrative of sofia being lazy and ruthless and under the control of her bf when that really isn’t the full story.
in the new chd you can tell alex is no comedian and is more of a guys-girl. while sofia in her podcast is funny but it definitely drags without alex’s editing. they were a super entertaining duo but i neither work perfectly on their own.

It’s obvious that her boyfriend was really persuading and influencing her thoughts about the matter and the fact that she was so new to the industry definitely made her believe his words at face value. I think a piece you're missing is that there was a brief period where Alex started to come under fire during the early releases of her solo CHD career - not just because it was awkward, but because she began to say relatively tone deaf borderline problematic things. It wasn't a huge hit to her career, but she did lose a lot of OG CHD fans (myself included).
People began voicing, primarily on the CHD subreddit and Instagram, that while Alex did heavy lifting with the editing, Sofia was likely responsible for many of the signature jokes and humor (which she has since hinted at on Sofia With An F). Sofia also likely acted as a sounding board that kept the show relatable, as she was more down to earth / had worked a normal 9-5 before, and Alex had always wanted to be famous (which isn't bad, but she'd never had a 'real world' job). And post-drama CHD was very tone deaf and influencer-based - Alex deserved more money for editing, yes, but Sofia definitely had her merits as well, which became glaringly obvious in her absence.
This was a great and neutral take on the topic, but I do think you could easily leave this video and villainize Sofia. End of the day, they just did what's best for them and Alex had a quicker reaction time online. I don't think from a PR perspective it was smart of Sofia to ghost the internet, but she has since said on her podcast that she was in an extremely poor mental health state. She flew back home to Utah, was simultaneously likely dealing with her break up with Peter Nelson AND her friendship with Alex blowing up, and I personally think it was really smart of her to take that step back.

Instead of taking the chance to encourage listeners to have a healthy conversation with their partner about boundaries, how to go about having such a conversation, and what to do next, they went straight to promoting cheating. IDC if it was a joke or not (to me, it didn't seem like one) but either talk to your partner or break up with them. I think this is a similar thing to Grace being screwed around and being severely underpaid due to being stuck in a horrible and unfair contract. Its been a while since I even interacted with Grace's content in any way but I used to be a huge fan and if I remember correctly she was getting paid a wage/salary despite how big of a creator she was and it still shocks me that one of the largest creators on the platform at the time was being treated that way. I feel like if Grace's situation happened today in 2022 it would be massive news and everyone on the platform would be discussing it seriously.
Its a shame Grace is in the place she is now, she was probably making a ton of money for the company she was signed with, but since there wasn't as much knowledge about the process and how much can be made by being an "influencer"/online personality, I feel as though her situation was majorly swept under the rug and no one talks about it anymore since it did happen quite a long time ago (in terms of youtube time)
Im not saying Grace's choice in signing the bad contract was entirely on her, I think it was just such new territory that neither she nor the company could have imagined how much money youtube could bring in when the contract was signed and Grace agreed to it

I know its not a popular opinion but IMO- while their dynamic was like lightning in a bottle, Sofia was the true talent on CHD. She also talks all the time about how she felt like Alex was a huge clout chaser (staging paparazzi pics, leaking info thru a "source" to the media etc) in her words "the best liar she ever met" and also super manipulative, and as someone who listened to ALL their episodes I believe it, Alex was constantly interrupting Sofia and basically used her as what I call a social buffer. Also what kind of best friend goes behind your back and gets a raise on a job where you both have the same position?? and you live with them???? Also once Alex secured the deal by herself to keep going with CHD she launched a tear down campaign with Dave and barstool against Sofia which imo was cruel and unnecessary especially since Alex saw first hand how much Sofia struggled with depression and anxiety. If the story about Sophia stopped at her being mad that Alex was being paid more and she quit to do her own thing, that'd be much more nuanced. But all of the negotiating details is what cemented people's opinions against her.

Until this video I was blissfully unaware of this part of the internet. HOWEVER, why is it when women want to renegotiate their salaries and ask for more money they get treated as if their job is someone how charity? Like women should be grateful for the opportunity to just provide someone else value. This is a really sexist double standard.

Hi Hannah, I love your videos and this was a very good breakdown. My only criticism was, like some comments have been saying, that I felt you covered Alex side way more than Sofia's. I remember Sofia coming out with her side of the story but it was not mentioned in this video. You are usually very balanced in your videos, so this was probably a fluke (plus I know you've not been well) but I felt this was just one sided. 27:00 min in - I get why Alex deserves the raise and why she may not have told Sophia but if she’s your partner, you guys made this baby together and it’s a justified raise then you shouldn’t be hiding it from your partner. You don’t have to give details but of course she’s going to be mad… likee duh
Plus if I’m not mistaken (please correct me if I am wrong) but didn’t Sophia WRITE the show and Alex EDITED the show? So how is it justified or fair that the editor gets a raise but not the writer… writing can take just as many hours, you have to think of how to write as 2 different people, time it out, be interesting and grabbing.
I’m trying to have sympathy for Alex but I at his point I still think she’s a big sell out. I can’t take her crap seriously, especially not since she started hosting interviews with people like Jamie-Lynn… which really makes me wonder how you praise her interview skills when like… wtf lol
38:00 & 44:00 min - but she did give her side? On her own podcast… you kept saying that she never shared her side but that’s just wrong lol she literally goes through it and then addresses Alex directly
Also since when is being friends for 4 years a short amount of time?? Show me two high schoolers or adults that can stay friends for 4 years lol in todays climates

CHD was that individualistic feminism where it's everybody for themselves and boy did Alex practice what she preached. The most fascinating thing about CHD was when Sofia left and the narrative that was spun by Barstool and Alex in order to push her out. It's an important lesson about how bad going into business with friends can be because that trust can blind you. Overnight Sofia became the symbol for that best friend controlled by their domineering boyfriend, and I want to say it was she said, she said, but we just didn't get anything from Sofia because it happened so fast. All of a sudden she was this lazy emotional vampire and Alex was just the good friend propping her up and was secretly the backbone of the show while Sofia just leeched off the fruits of her labor.
It was ridiculous how it actually worked and when you look back on it, Alex had to have been planned that out. So not only was Sofia not first, but she was also caught off guard which would not have happened if they were simply co-hosts. Barstool backs the winning horse, she loses access to the fans, Alex gets to go on the show and to tell her version of events while sucking up to David Portnoy, which in retrospect is ironic given that she portrayed herself as this girlboss feminist while Sofia was the one who needed to hide behind a man.
Most people aren't going to go to another podcast they don't know about to hear Sofia's side and if they're going to her personal instagram, it's going to be to put her down, not listen to her side because Alex and Portnoy did weaponize their fans against her.
It just goes to show you how shallow their brand of empowerment was. The moment Alex saw those dollar signs Sofia was expendable to her. And when Sofia left, it was all, "Aw, daddy gang I'm so sad that Sofia left us for her boyfriend, but maybe she can make it on OF!" Just vicious and a truly toxic community that's a direct result of their content.
I checked on each of their content recently and CHD is a snoozefest. Sofia with an F is more interesting, but it's still not for me. It at least seems a lot less shallow.
