    These things are such a pure education tool. I don't say that to undercut it's sound quality or use as a tool. It is just that it is SO UNPARALELLED for helping synth newcomers get their head wrapped around all the vital concepts. I sold it a few years after buying, and I can't say I miss it per se but I have fond memories of learning on it, jamming with friends, and unlocking its potential with some reverb pedals. The Microbrute is a rite of passage.

    Part of the problem too is that while it was revolutionary when it first came out, other manufacturers quickly caught on that there was a market there and started producing similar synths at a similar price point that are quite frankly better. Novation came out with the Bass Station II, Korg with the Monologue, and while it’s digital and has touch capacitors instead of keys, Arturia’s own minifreak is in that same range. And if people are willing to go controller plus module, then the options go up dramatically.

    • @alexwestconsulting
      @alexwestconsulting Před 3 měsíci +1

      No not better, just different. The Arturia stuffs have a unique sound that no one duplicates. I've got all the synths you just mentioned, and plenty more, but the brutes are their own thing.

    "When you are on stage, you are one of the instruments" is seriously one of THE things that people need to hear of all time.
    SO many people forget this. I have been very fortunate to have been part of music groups that are... well... analog...
    (brass ensembles / big bands etc) and even playing rhodes and my ms20 mini in a band, you can't just kick open the filter and blast away everyone.
    learning to listen to others as I played, learning to know where to play on the keys, learning how to adjust a synth to be an "instrument" in a band, instead of exploring all the sounds it can make and trying to show off. Guitarists fall into this trap as well, and me having a past as a show offy trumpet player definitely understands the feeling.
    Great video, I remember the microbrute coming out, not being impressed when I played one at a friends house, and ultimately deciding it would be better for me to go deep and get an ms-20 mini, a more complicated but in my opinion, great synth if you learn to play it. I only got to learning how to do that recently with some improv jam sessions where i was patching on the fly, and before that it was "just another synth voice" to me. I think that the micro/minibrute may be similar, but there's obviously way less to tweak.
    This was very interesting and got me thinking about music again, thank you.

    my micro brute got a diy make over with midi out and some other patch 'holes' almost 8 years ago (when I surreptitiously bent over it backwards) and since then lives semi-stuck together with an upright mini brute (without the key bed) with its own additional diy 20+ patch bay. There is also a dedicated sawitch which lets me control the mini via micro internally, leaving the micro midi out plug free to control a third party. Cheers from Zurich

    Not a MicroBrute owner, but I did buy an original MiniBrute from new almost exactly nine years ago. I can't say I use it every day like you but I have used it continuously since then with the only problem being the usual stickiness on the knobs and side cheeks. Played a few gigs with it, used it as a MIDI controller and USB to 5-pin DIN MIDI converter, used it with a Mother-32 and it's been solid the whole time. I don't know if that means anything, but I hope your Mini 2S is solid as well.

    It has been discontinued, yet the Mark 2 version has not released yet....patiently waiting so it can drive the original prices lower. I had one and loved it, but had to sell it to pay a bill years ago. I want to get another...but you can still find um for 200 bucks. There was this one sound it made that was so powerful....I want to get one again just for that sound, no other synth has been able to make that sound for me.

    I've had mine for about 8 years and haven't had this issue. Not discrediting what you're saying, but mine has been fine. To be fair though, I never really used it to gig. I tried to add it as a way to switch between E Bass and synth bass but I couldn't convince my band of it's potential lol. My MicroKorg though has several dead keys. But I totally agree with you that cheap should mean it's expected to break. Cheap or not it should last. Great synth though and great video!!

    It was my 2nd synth and my first analog. I got in '14 or so and until recently it worked just fine, even though i haven't always been nice to it. Just a couple of days ago the sustain level stopped working. (It‘s now fixed at zero) but mine has worked for just shy of 10 years.
    I never toured or gigged with it, but i had it with me at a couple of recording and jam sessions and always just thrown in my backpack, no case no cover. Nothing.
    I love the sound of this beast, for me it‘s the ms-10 of it’s time. I played and recorded so much with it and despite the simplicity i always found new sounds that i liked with it.
    I can see myself upgrading to the minibrute2 aswell.

    I like the Micro for playing around with voltages on other gear. The sequencer outputs CV/gate, and you get CV outs from the tempo-synced LFO and envelope.
    This makes it fun to use with a modest modular or other patchable monos.
    I’ve had mine since they came out. No reliability issues.

    Although unlikely, it IS possible you got (un)lucky. I got an MPC Live II and the main left channel didn't make any sound. I did a warranty exchange and the new on had an issue with the screen reading touches that weren't happening. The third one... so far, so good. Also, I haven't heard many stories of issues with them, so I think there was maybe a bad batch, or something. It DOES make me nervous about ever buying a used one, though.

    This was fun AND cathartic. I bought an early MicroBrute, I still have it, and what failed on it was the octave switch. Which sucks, but is also cool because now it goes an octave lower than it’s supposed to. Sometimes… because it’s broken.

    Yeah I'm a big fan of the microbrute. I was always an arturia fanboy when they were coming up, with their software integration with their controllers, had factory with the hardware, and had many debates where I defended their honor and tried so many times to convince people that Arturia was chaging the game. And Arturia proved me right. I picked up the Minibrute when it first came out. I already had some semi-modular stuffs starting with the Doepfer Dark Energy, but Minibrute was one of the first to really penetrate the market. But the build quality is crap, keys that break, plastic that disintegrates, and it's stupid heavy and big for what it is. Since then I now own multiple keysteps, a minibrute 2, a couple minibrute 2S, Microfreak and vst collections that I actually paid for. Anyway, I too have owned several microbrute. Super small and convenient. I can get a few on a desk easy and they have THAT Arturia sound. Super underrated gear. And Microbrute isn't nearly as fail at the disintegrating plastic and broken keys as minibrute is.
    The hydrasynth really is good though. That keybed on the Explorer as an mpe controller alone is worth the price, never mind the sound engine.
    Microkorg XL is crap. The R3/Radius is a joy to use. Well, the R3 isn't a joy, but it is relative to XL.
    Oh, and the Squire Classic Vibe is great. You showed a crappy Affinity or Sonic or Bullet or whatever.
    Finally, the 2S is awesome :)

    • @NintendoSixtyJorts
      @NintendoSixtyJorts  Před 3 měsíci

      Agh I thought I got a picture of the Classic Vibe whoops!
      Also I still really want to get an R3 someday even though I have zero reason to ever own one. The Radias engine hasn't aged tremendously well but I have real nostalgia for the XL and having a full key version would be nice.

    I had to replace all the knobs and sliders on mine as the plastic they use degrades over time and becomes all sticky and nasty.. I'd still use it as I do like it, it's a fun mono synth. But recently the USB connection stopped working and now I can't change the midi channel for it (because you can only do this via connecting to a computer?), so it now it plays all the time - no matter what Midi ch i change to, the damn thing plays along with my other gear. Had to disconnect it and now it just sits there.
