How I fixed the Sony Mini HiFi CD player grinding noise and a look inside the system

  • Since Sony's service centre said they won't fix stereos that are over 10 years old, I decided to take the HiFi system apart and disconnect the CD changer since I don't need it, and poof! the noise is gone and the stereo plays back songs on the AUX input without any issues.
    By the way:
    1. This system is NOT for sale.
    2. I do not repair HiFi systems

I own an Sony MHC 881 system and CD changer still works after nearly 25 years. My grandpa bought a system from 2005 and after two years both CD and tape player were dead... They really cared about quality in 80s and 90s.

Thank you, your video gave me confidence to open my device and check the belt- the CD tray wouldn't open
Turned out the CD tray belt just slipped over, I doubled it since it is worn out and put it back on- perfect again

It's incredible to see the level of quality inside the older shelf stereo models. Huge transformers and heatsinks that you'd typically only see in the real deal home theater receivers. It gives you a hint as to the power, quality, and amplification abilities of these things.
I'd say the MHCEC909IP model (the blue 540w RMS model) is the last high quality model from sony, as far as components go.
The successor to that model, the black 700w "MHCECL99BT" and its non-bluetooth counterpart, switched to class d amps and if you take them apart, they use very small power supplies, caps, heatsinks, you name it. They weigh less than a game console.
It's obvious Sony saw the decline of interest and stopped trying around 2013/14.

Around four days back, I bought a Sony RXD10AV (which is 98% similar model) except that it does not play VCD but comes with other packed features such as DVD 5.1ch input and Dolby ProLogic Surround. It's also a very lightly used model with some scuffs. The tape deck was failing on me but I managed to fix the belts on one of the tape decks. I was lucky to get that...… THE SOUND IS AWESOME...BASS IS BLASTING...

Great video dude. Might as well order the belts and fix it. It's a shame for a good machine (no matter what that is) to work half way. Specially if the fix is easy. This year, since we are locked in the house anyway,I went ahead and fixed all the stereos and boomboxes that I had since the 90's. I also don't use cassette or cd anymore and hacked some of them to have bluetooth. But it's good to know that they still work and are in great condition after 3 decades of use. They don't make 'em like that anymore.

Mine is a MHC-DX3 and everything works fine but when I put caseetes in to play or record which was honestly the main reason I bought it, it randomly switches back and forth on the rewind and fast forward and makes super loud clunking noises for a while and then goes quiet and does nothing. I can't figure out what the issue is or how to fix it. It's the only issue I have with it. I just really want to record and play casettes, I don't think I'm able to fix it myself so I'm just hoping some repair shop nearby is willing to fix it, assuming they had the parts which they usually make you buy yourself if it is uncommon and overcharge...

It really dpends on what kind of phone you've got, most modern day phones dont even have a headphone jack, so most likley you will need to buy a Bluetooth audio receiver. As for the cable its a standard 3.5mm to RCA cable, plugs into the TV audio in port of the stereo.

Same axis as the cables, do not try to move them away from the board (perpendicular to the circuitboard). They had rails inside, it was hard to judge the direction needed to unplug without damaging the circuit. It worked in my case

The "bodge wires" are jumpers. It's just a simple way to use both sides of a single layer PCB.
This technique is still used on multi-layer PCBs on more modern electronics, though they tend to use surface mounted 0 ohm resistors (I assume it's easier for the assembly robots)

Not a small rubber band. Just medium sized. Plus , I left the side of the stereo off after I replaced the band. I was surprised how hot it get inside there, so I decided to just leave it off. I really like the stereo and was going to throw it away, but decided to give a rubber band a try.

I had similar issue, CD making noise on both of my identical stereo's (GRX35) in the last 12 months or so. I never used the CD, so its almost certain, that it was a "feature" they programmed. CD goes bad after 10yrs and annoy the user, so we would buy another one.... I did the same thing, disconnecting it, so they could not trick me either ;) Thats just my thinking though.. Awesome product BTW the sound is just amaizing considering its size and age.

it's not a programmed features, the belt go bad, it happens to all kinds of cassette decks and cds of every brand or design issues, there are a lot of other ways to make the user buy new stuff and mostly happens in phones/laptops/tv

2 ways bro, through Minidisc or TV audio input! for that you will need RCA to 3.5mm cable or a Bluetooth audio adapter if you want to play music wirelessly.

    Hi tech guy Charlie,
First of all a big thanks for making a video of your repair attempt. It helped me gain courage to open and fix my MHC-G880 (bought in 1999 by parents) which had pretty much similar issues as your system when I turned it on almost after 10 years. Now when I play it I am reminded of what I was missing .. pure awesome sound with deep bass .
    Couple of thoughts.
I could not unplug the CD unit power cables on the main board as you did. Was not coming out easily. Instead I removed the plugs on the other end on the CD unit board. Just in case someone faces same issue.
The bluetooth unit. I bought the same tp link that you have but realized it is v4.1 .. no deal breaker as the sound is awesome and range is good. However, I think a bluetooth v5 might be even better as all the new phones and devices are v5. Will that improve sould further- I don't know. Range and stability - definitely yes.
Lastly, I am contemplating fixing the CD unit belt but not really feeling pushed. I have few old CDs so again nothing much to gain and am happy with the way system works now. What about you? Did you fix the CD unit?
    Thanks again dude.. :)
