  • In this episode of To The Point, Dr Shashi Tharoor interviews Dr. S Somanath, Director, VSSC (VIKRAM SARABHAI SPACE CENTRE), ISRO Dr. Somanath gives a lucid account of how his father (a HIndi teacher) initiated him into his passion of Space Research and how a mechanical engineer went on to head one of India's premiere space and rocket science institutes. Dr Somanath calls India's PSLV Programme the game changer for the country's Space Research. He also lays out how India has been striving very hard to get more and more self reliant in the field of Space Technology. Dr Tharoor also asks Dr Somanath about India's Human Space Mission the Gaganyaan. In an engrossing part , Dr Somanath also talks about India's unsuccessful effort to land Chandrayaan II on the Moon. Dr Somanth talks about the exciting prospect of ISRO and private players working in tandem for futur space missions and ways adopted by ISRO to recruit Space Scientists.

      Exactly. I saw a recent article where K Sivan was talking about different innovations and saw a lot of hateful comments about how they should shut up and deliver first. The thing is with innovation that it requires a lot of effort and money and the chances of success are less but it surely helps a country,Many European countries had a lot of failures before reaching here but sadly people put politics before science and technology

    This has been a most inspiring and intelligent conversation.     From a religious point of view, I am someone who sees the sun,moon & all other planets as reference points in our astrological world........but, also being in fascination of the planetorium in Bangalore ,& going back to my college days as having had physics as my favourite subject, aeroscience has always fascinated me.........thestudy astro world is no doubt a fascinating feild......but,I do hope we humans will limit our research on this to just orbitting & photographing the outer planets, my sincere congratulations to the brain behind the chandrayan mission,the coveted director of ISRO Dr.Somnath & his team ...What a proud achievement indeed ...looking forward to their discoveries at the planetorium.....

    Why focus on IITs for recruitment? Dr Somnath and a large number of ISRO scientists, engineers are from other colleges and they have done India proud

    This interview had a very meticulous and balanced structure. Almost all the topics were given justice. A bit of history, well-publicized failure of Chandrayaan, covid impact on Gaganyaan, success of Mangalyaan, ISRO's model of frugal engineering, and the role private sector will play in the future- all were discussed. Finally, the recruitment process was brought up so that interested people could use this relevant information.
    Thanks to Dr. Shashi Tharoor for being such a alert host and asking these questions. And congratulations to Dr S Somanath for becoming the new ISRO chairman.

    An excellent interview! Dr. Somanath, erudite, simple and confident, spoke very well sharing various aspects of India's space missions! He is truly awesome! Saw Shashi Tharoor doing what he should be doing more often - interviewing...
    Couldn't help noticing that his tricolour stole (Angavasthram) should have been worn to match with our Tricolour... but has been worn reverse! All in all, a very interesting and enlightening! interview! Jai Hind!
