I always tear up when Riley finally takes that deep breath after breaking down. She’s finally letting her feelings out, even when they’re hard. As someone who has battled chronic severe depression, this whole movie means a lot to me.

God it is so refreshing to see a reactor immediately click the whole Joy/Sadness thing and to not be dissing Sadness constantly at the start lol
This is such an intelligent movie and script honestly, the way it presents these very important and heavy issues and opens discussion about mental health and is very accessible to kids/all ages, so people can learn and form volcbulary for how theyre feeling and become emotionally introspective at a young age, is such a brilliant thing honestly
That and the movie is just both hilarious and very touching on its own

I love that one of the central themes of this movie is about toxic positivity. Sometimes, joy is the absolute last emotion needed to deal with certain situations. I know a lot of people who could stand to learn that lesson.
Also, the teen boy and the cat are two of my fave scenes in the film.. I'm pretty sure they're spot on accurate 😆

I love that you got the relationship between joy and sadness, not everyone really understands that. This movie was so well put together. Their analogies are beautifully crafted so that no matter how old or young you are, they can make sense. A couple of my favorites are when the train of thought crashes. It demonstrates how difficult it can be to think straight when you are in the midst of trauma. And Bing Bong...that scene gets me every time. But his sacrifice is perfect, because imaginary friends, like multiple personalities, are created to help and protect you. The imaginary friend gives you the perfect companion who always wants to do what you ant to do and is always there for you. Bing Bong realized, at the end, that he was, literally, holding Riley back from growing, so he let himself go. This doesn't mean that Riley will never remember him again, but he will no longer feel real to to her. That was an aspect of growing up and the loss of innocence.
THen little ones, like when Disgust tricked anger into blowing his top so she could cut through the window. My take on that was Rliey being disgusted at her own anger and how it was not helpful, so she had a, literal, emotional breakthrough to use her anger to force her other feelings back in.
There is SO much more, but those two always stick with me. Thank you for reacting to this movie.

If I watch this movie a million times I'll never not cry at the loss of Bing Bong. Joy is such a perfect portrayal of toxic positivity and this movie showing her growth is amazing. So many subtle scenes too...needing to get super Angry to get back in touch with both Joy and Sadness...all of it. Just terrific.

15:05 Thanks blue!!! finally someone who understands. I've seen other reacts channels and normally they think that sadness is the problem, you are the first to realize that joy has an obsession with controlling the other emitions without space for others. I have moved to different cities many times in my life and this movie always reminds me of that and I can say that in this situation you experience many different emotions and it is normal but the worst thing you can do is suppress them.

It is actually Riley who is surpressing sadness (and in a lesser way fear, anger and disgust). She never had to deal with those emotions in that extend before and does not know how to cope. It is her first life changing moment (like birth, death, marriage, divorce, moving). Joy is dominant only because Riley had mostly joyous experiences in her life. Riley did not devellop the other emotions (yet), because there was no need for it (yet). Part of growing up is that you eventually also will face experiences that are not only Joy. Heartbreak, failures, loss, change... Riley is growing up and developping as a person. The supporting parents help her sort her emotions out (as shown at the end). Her base, wich was build on joy and is stabil and safe and loving, is good.

Bing Bong being forgotten and Reilly breaking down and saying to her parents that she hopes they aren’t mad, makes me cry every time. It just makes me so sad that she was struggling so much, then to be worried that she’d get in trouble for not living up to an emotional expectation, that her parents, unintentionally, put upon her. Seeing a child or any person break down and basically blame themselves for having natural human feelings and emotions about something life changing, is heartbreaking. No one should feel scared or ashamed to express the things they are struggling with.
And for kids, moving can be very very hard!!! Parents often underestimate how difficult this can be for a kid. Unfortunately the choices parents make, while it might be financially beneficial or the school district and neighborhood are better, it’s not the only thing to take into consideration.

The broccoli pizza is an inside joke (an Inside Out joke?). Pixar headquarters are in Emeryville, California, not far from Berkeley. There's a pizza place in Berkeley called Cheese Board Pizza Collective that's connected to a cheese shop. They have a changing menu, but they make only one type of pizza every day, and it's always vegetarian. A lot of Pixar movies feature landmarks near their HQ.

Joy is not the "bad" person/emotion. She is just joy, and Riley has been joyful mostly ever since birth, as kids usually are. She wants to keep it that way and it's not like being a typical "control freak". It's the same as Anger is just Anger and can't be anything else. Joy starts to realize that Sadness plays a bigger role in a person's life than she knew, which isn't surprising because Joy can only relate to joy. I mean, who _wants_ to be sad? Actually, Joy starts to believe in Sadness more than Sadness does.
No one is the villain in this movie, it's just emotions evolving and maturing, as we do as people.

    • @heathersfall
      @heathersfall Před 10 měsíci +1

Finally, someone on the same page.
I see most people only focus on how she treated Sadness and took the lead in Riley's head for a long time and then assumed that she was bad.
Joy isn't bad, she just didn't do things right. The mistake she made makes her feel more human to me. I bet no one is born perfect. As Joy only wanted Riley to be happy, but how she saw it, it's like "being happy is all about being joyful, and smile and laugh all the time".
Joy follows one purpose which is to make Riley happy, and I mean who doesn't want to be happy? (You can give me your happiness if you say you don't want to /j)
The emotions are happy when Riley is happy, so Joy was just doing the best she can to help Riley feel that way, even though she didn't know that what she does sometimes couldn't turn out exactly what she wanted.
When she was in the Memory Dump, she said that she only wanted Riley to be happy, and then hugged all of the memories even the blue core memory. Like other emotions, she really loves Riley and she felt like she had lost everything (written in the script: "Joy cries. A long, deep, painful cry. Joy has lost everything."). And she finally understood the importance of sadness, syncing herself with Riley to truly empathize with her girl.
Here's a thing that I rarely see anyone talk about, how they portrait Joy as someone trying to do something good for the person she loves, Riley. Remember when they say "Nothing comes back from the dump"? But Joy did, with the help of Bing Bong and his rocket ship. I think it's just beautiful, not only because of what Bing Bong is willing to do for Riley, but also because of the message I got from it: No matter how bad your life is, how miserable you feel like, your "Joy" is still there, trying so hard to help you feel happy again. That's what Joy tried to do all the time.
Just let our Joy learn and grow with us. Joy is a part of us.

Work. It's a common thing, you go where the work is. We don't know what Riley's dad does for a living, but it looks like they moved because that's where the work was. Likely better pay/benefits. Or maybe the place is closing down where he was, and it's this or find a new job.

as someone who studies human behavior its great to get to see physical portrayal of emotions like completely neglecting sadness is the worst thing due to sadness is what makes us not only connect but also help us understand we are vulnerable and knowing are limitations, toxic positivity prevents us for understanding that, it is OK to feel whether your a male or female of any age from any background we are all the same when it comes to emotions personally the boy thoughts girl alert is my favorite as it reminds of me every time i see my girlfriend lol

This movie represents emotions concisely; they're people with your best interest at heart and only flare up because they think something is wrong and want to help you.
However, I would remove disgust as an independent character because disgust is actually gift from anger. Anger is responsible for establishing boundaries, it is responsible for motivation, confidence and self esteem. Anger is good when it is wisened with age and experience and discipline. As such it is responsible for the disgust trigger.
I would actually replace Disgust with Shame. Shame is responsible for reinforcing your moral codes and your values, and it is responsible for our caoacity for forgiveness and atonement. And a child's moral values are often self-centred until they're set straight by good parents who don't oversupply shame to bad behaviour.
I would also add two more emotions that are the same but different. I would call them twins! Envy and Jealousy. In reality your core emotions are the following:
Joy, Fear, Sadness, Anger, Shame, Jealousy and Envy. All other emotions and mood states stem from or a mix of two or more of these base emotions.

You know maybe joy can't exist without sadness but sadness still could've controlled her actions throughout the movie

      She really couldn't
      But more importantly
It's not a bad thing to feel sad about these things
The core memories turning blue wasn't actually a bad thing in the first place
