Tragically, on June 2, 2018, Daniel Brophy's life was cut short when he was brutally gunned down in the kitchen of the Oregon Culinary Institute, one of the places where he felt most at home. The shocking murder left the culinary world and the Portland community reeling, as they struggled to come to terms with the loss of such a talented and beloved chef. As the investigation into Brophy's death unfolded, suspicion fell on his wife, romance novelist Nancy Crampton Brophy, who had written an essay titled "How to Murder Your Husband" years earlier. Despite her claims of innocence, evidence mounted against her, including surveillance footage, gun purchases, and inconsistencies in her alibi. In May 2022, nearly four years after Daniel Brophy's murder, Nancy Crampton Brophy was found guilty of second-degree murder and unlawful use of a weapon, bringing a measure of justice to the chef's family and friends. THE RECORDED CALLS TO THE POLICE WERE SO TELLING. SHE WAS LAUGHING ON THE STAND! I COULDN'T BELIEVE IT! PLUS, SHE DIDN'T REMEMBER DRIVING AROUND THE MORNING HER HUSBAND WAS SHOT AND SUCCUMBED TO THAT SHOOTING! THAT DAY WOULD BE ETCHED IN MY MIND TILL THE DAY I DIED!! SHE WAS SO NONCHALANT ABOUT EVERYTHING. SHE DID IT. MOTIVE, OPPORTUNITY AND HOPEFULLY GAINFUL $$$$$$$ TO HER BANK ACCOUNT. I WOULDN'T BE SURPRISED, IF SHE WAS TO BE FREED SOONER THAN LIFE, SHE'D STILL TRY TO ACCESS THE LIFE INSURANCE POLICIES. IT WOULD BE JUST LIKE HER. 🙄

She surely had rehearsed it in her head. In her head, she was charismatic, funny, or even witty. In her head, she was the main character in one of her books and so she thought everyone would be taken by her charm and not suspect her. And surely no one would suspect the fuddy duddy old lady. Imo she seems like a covert narcissist to the point of being delusional and a psychopath.
Because she wasn’t a “sweet old lady” she is a nasty killer and has no remorse for killing this beloved Chef.

What's even more heartbreaking for me is the fact that Chef Brophy's students show more compassion, grief, and love for him than his own wife. These people are not even family members and yet his death wrecked them. It goes to show how truly evil Nancy is.

Me & my husband keep life insurance even though we're "poor." My neighbors did too, her hubby died of CV, had 4 kids (like me) & now she's not selling her house to be homeless, instead she remodeled ALOT. (Something I wouldn't do, as I would save it for me & the kid's NEEDS) but at least it prevents you from an even bigger tragedy.

If I’ve learned anything at all from watching true crime, never let anyone know you have life insurance.
When I got mine I told my ex that my new man was my beneficiary and told my new man that my ex is the beneficiary (we share a child). They're both misinformed bc it's assigned with half to go to my mother to ensure the care of my daughter and half to go in a trust for my daughter with my mom as the Trustee 😂 I know 100% that my mom will always put my girl's well being first. My mom knows but she's comfy, she's not bumping me off for money 😂

This was the first whole trial I watched. The impact the loss of a person has is always big, but hearing all the people that were impacted at the scene itself and all the people that have lost a dear friend and good teacher hit me so hard.
Shawn Overstreet was masterful in his cross examination of Nancy. Let her think that he was bumbling, when he was setting a trap all along, one she talked herself into.
I’ve watched that cross examination at least 10 times. It’s great!

I watched the whole trial. It is a good example of the power of circumstantial evidence. Also a good example of the risk of a defendant taking the stand. She didn’t convince anyone with her attempts to explain the evidence.

Great to hear more from Prosecutor Shawn Overstreet on this case. I have watched his cross examination of Nancy too many times to count. He was phenomenal and the ultimate opponent for Nancy Brophy. Great recap of this case with rare photos and footage of Dan.

Oh boy...She would have left his wallet in their house and the police would have found it. She was not a smart cookie. She got a whiff of money, got a bit excited by the idea of being richer living a single stress free life. She rolled the dice! Only to realise that she lost it all. And sadly took the life of a very special man! A lose lose situation. Very sad story.
She drove her own car. Took her phone. Didn't have an alibi. Killed him with the same caliber of weapon as her own complete weapon.
It's also terrifying, if Nancy hadn't been so directly suspicious, she could've gotten away with this. It took an incredible amount of research and close examination of Nancy to find any motive, means or opportunity that weren't obvious.
Chef Brophy you were a great cook and wonderful instructor, thank you for believing in me and giving me up inspiration when I had hard times during some quarters.

There is a reason why she had to belong to a writers circle - she could not plot a basic real life story murder, let alone write a good suspense story. (Just the few sentences of her writing that were shown are enough to see she was NOT a good writer.) First sentence: ‘I am a ROMANTIC suspense writer.’ Oh, really? That building had no surveillance and she knew that since she’d been there multiple times. She forgot the others businesses have them which is how they caught her van near the scene at the time of his murder.
