  • Rachel Reeves has announced plans to fill a £20 billion 'black hole' in the public budget by scrapping winter fuel payments for around 10 million pensioners. The Chancellor has also announced a 22 per cent wage increase for junior doctors over a two-year period. Will this generational shake-up be popular with the public? And can Labour hold the line on the two-child benefit cap following last week's revolt? Katy Balls speaks to Kate Andrews and former Labour advisor John McTernan.

One of the elephants in the room is the amount of tax revenues being thrown away on illegals and foreign countries. Whilst handing out approximately £14 billion in foreign aid (or even half that amount), health care for foreign nationals who arrive for treatment then disappear, and, as said, the illegals and their “needs” of free housing, hotels, food, pocket money, mobiles etc etc these mental politicians decide to try to balance the hole they created by taxing pensioners i.e. those people that have worked all their lives and paid into the system (unlike all the people who benefit but are outside of this country). @@GrooveTasticThang Sorry but you're wrong on average salary being low in the UK. The UK is 15th highest in the world with a median annual earnings of £34,963 in 2023. Top to bottom the EU ranges from €106,839.33 in Switzerland to €12,923.66 in Bulgaria... but the EU average is actually lower than the UK's at around €33,500 (£28,300).
Asia? The median salary in Asia is around USD 547 per month. The median salary represents the middle value of the country-wise salary distribution in Asia. This means that 50% of the countries have an average salary higher than USD 547, and the other 50% earn lower than USD 547. So that's just $6564 (£5,118) annually.

Labour left the public finances in tatters in 2010. The Tories tried (ish) to fill the hole but failed. Labour have re inherited what they left. NB Labour have never come to government with the public finances in a bad way. They have previously always spent the previous government's surplus. There is no surplus now. They will be out of power in five years but in that time they will only make things worse.

Why can't the labour go after Tories who stuffed their pockets with the money for the failed contracts? Billions wait to be reclaimed.

This was everybody's fault for over-playing something that killed 82 year olds on average. Unless you attended an anti-lockdown march or argued with family members or work colleagues that it was all disproportionate or slagged off Piers Morgan loudly on public transport; I don't think you get to point the finger, albeit upwards, at people also taking advantage of the lunacy. That atmosphere of anything goes should never have been allowed to happen, and you're as responsible for that as anyone.

Labour is not going to get economic growth through higher taxes on savings and investment alongside higher welfare spending.

Totally disingenuous by Reeves, the IFS warned of a £20bn black hole in government finances during the election, just laying the ground for excusing the failures to come.

Many pensioners still work because they receive the old pension...if a couple receive £300 plus £1 they will not be entitled to pension credit...making it very hard for them to keep their homes warm....I have a tip for her to help her save money get rid of the HOL and cut MPs pay as most are a waste of space and stop ALL perks....and redirect the money to keeping pensioners warm...

Pensioners in the main vote for Tories or Reform,The reason is they have experienced 3-4 Labour governments in their lives. Thus Ms Reeves can clobber the older generation and not feel it will cost her any votes
