- Rachel Reeves has announced plans to fill a £20 billion 'black hole' in the public budget by scrapping winter fuel payments for around 10 million pensioners. The Chancellor has also announced a 22 per cent wage increase for junior doctors over a two-year period. Will this generational shake-up be popular with the public? And can Labour hold the line on the two-child benefit cap following last week's revolt? Katy Balls speaks to Kate Andrews and former Labour advisor John McTernan.

Even if there are power stations still standing will be be able to buy in energy from abroad? Plus increasing solar farming in a country only 60% food sufficient will we be able to afford to buy it in if our industry closes down in blackouts? All being done in a great rush in a country with negligible carbon output. Rigid dogma has pretty much extinguished any grasp of reality in the minds of these politicians.
The winter fuel payments have gone to means tested. Were you happy for your taxes to go to the heating of a millionaires house?
Politicians don't care about the elderly dying they'll just continue to bring in millions of immigrants both 'legal' and illegal and find more billions of pounds for them and continue to destroy the country!
One of the elephants in the room is the amount of tax revenues being thrown away on illegals and foreign countries. Whilst handing out approximately £14 billion in foreign aid (or even half that amount), health care for foreign nationals who arrive for treatment then disappear, and, as said, the illegals and their “needs” of free housing, hotels, food, pocket money, mobiles etc etc these mental politicians decide to try to balance the hole they created by taxing pensioners i.e. those people that have worked all their lives and paid into the system (unlike all the people who benefit but are outside of this country). Do not forget the uni party already stitched up British women by altering the pension retirement age. McTernan is unhinged, like those he ‘advises’. He will never be in the position of seeing problems when older.
Starmer has also confirmed that Labour will be funding countries at source to try and stem the flow of illegal immigrants.
In his own words he wants to give money to countries to give training and create jobs to try and stop migration to the UK, no figures given yet but it will be millions of our taxpayers money.
As a pensioner and having lived through 4 Labour governments, I am horrified that anyone over 65 voted Labour because they must have known what was coming. 4.3 billion last year for migrants and they take the WFA from pensioners, despite Starmer going on record saying he would absolutely not do this. The previous lot promised 1.3 millions homes and were in power for 14 years and didn't deliver anywhere near that - and that was a deliberate choice.

Asia? The median salary in Asia is around USD 547 per month. The median salary represents the middle value of the country-wise salary distribution in Asia. Pensioners remember this when they want your vote
Labour knew what the finances were. Blaming the previous government is the o,dest and lamest excuse for everything. We., see how we are in 18 months to 2 year. My guess is that we will have bigger hole in the Financial es
They'll save that for the very end, not unlike the tories to be fair. It'll be the end of their tenure when we see them stitch up posterity with self-serving ratchet-like constitutional change too.
The tax payer subsidised public sector pension liabilities of 2.6 trillion pounds is the real problem, these liabilities have crippled the U.K. economy for many years.
Yeah but 80% of the public sector vote Labour.
Hows about these politicians give up some of the free stuff the taxpayer gives them make a start with there pensions there second houses there money to pay there heating bills the cheap food and drink in westminster and all the expenses they claim when you add up what these people get you will understand why those that lost there seats were in tears
Write 50 times : their their their their tbeir . ....... thanks 😁😁😁😁😁
She could cut the Ukraine funding, foreign aid, Lammys funding of Gaza, funding for the invaders and not staff money of wages.
And stop paying MILLIBAND HIS SALARY
This is tantamount to theft off the people who can’t afford it. And then have the audacity to give their money to doctors police and teachers who are very well paid and are in safe jobs. This is absolutely sickening. 🇬🇧
As a former Leftie even I have to ask why do you and MSM keep giving McTernan a voice as imo the mans a former Brownite who took part of my pension when I retired and again imo would not have any understanding of bringing kids up on a council estate in the UK or struggling to live as a pensioner.
Labour 1 Pensioners 0 - Second half on 30th October 2024.
They'll make a mess as they did when blair was in power
So that's why the American housing market collapsed the world banking system, Blair, nothing to do with the deregulation of the mortgage market under Bush.....
Labour left the public finances in tatters in 2010. The Tories tried (ish) to fill the hole but failed. Labour have re inherited what they left. NB Labour have never come to government with the public finances in a bad way. They have previously always spent the previous government's surplus. There is no surplus now. They will be out of power in five years but in that time they will only make things worse.
Is Reeves Greg Davies in disguise? Neither of whom could run a whelk stall.
I suggest you research her background. She is more than qualified.
@@Tashygay Oh yes, she worked at the Magic Money Tree for a while.
Why can't the labour go after Tories who stuffed their pockets with the money for the failed contracts? Billions wait to be reclaimed.
This was everybody's fault for over-playing something that killed 82 year olds on average. Unless you attended an anti-lockdown march or argued with family members or work colleagues that it was all disproportionate or slagged off Piers Morgan loudly on public transport; I don't think you get to point the finger, albeit upwards, at people also taking advantage of the lunacy. That atmosphere of anything goes should never have been allowed to happen, and you're as responsible for that as anyone.
Labour is not going to get economic growth through higher taxes on savings and investment alongside higher welfare spending.
Im a retired nurse with both pensions i have 18k a year and i pay 122 pounds a month tax...and i might have to pay more....this is age discrimmination, typical liebour
Sick. Sick sick
Totally disingenuous by Reeves, the IFS warned of a £20bn black hole in government finances during the election, just laying the ground for excusing the failures to come.
Always the elderly and disabled who will suffer under Labour.
And there was me thinking she would take on the giant multi-million pound companies.
Looks like we have another lettuce for chancellor 😅
Pensioners were warned that Labour was coming for them. Prescriptions will be next.
In your brain, sure.
I am 80 years old veteran worked hard all my life before this Girl was born as the younger generation no respect for there elder
You are happy paying your taxes to heat the homes of the wealthy?
Instead of going after pensioners, get rid of House of Lords and stop perks to MPs , Labour for the working people,I feel they have lost the plot
Stop MPs expenses , their heating allowances and subsidised meals etc . Get rid of the House of Lords and their expenses etc .
That a good few millions saved .
A two tier pension system, the poor pensioners on the lowest state pension in Western Europe, and the far better off pensioners on the tax payer subsidised public sector pensions.
Many pensioners still work because they receive the old pension...if a couple receive £300 plus £1 they will not be entitled to pension credit...making it very hard for them to keep their homes warm....I have a tip for her to help her save money get rid of the HOL and cut MPs pay as most are a waste of space and stop ALL perks....and redirect the money to keeping pensioners warm...
Pensioners in the main vote for Tories or Reform,The reason is they have experienced 3-4 Labour governments in their lives. Thus Ms Reeves can clobber the older generation and not feel it will cost her any votes
