XCMG is the 3rd largest manufacturer of heavy equipment. Don Ahern from Ahern rentals imported them and initially planned to put his Xtreme logo on them. Don Ahern manufactures Xtreme telehandlers and Snorkel lift equipment. I believe the orange paint was a request by Don as that is is primary company color, not sure on this. I am a local Las Vegas contractor and met with Ahern's (now United Rental's) lead mechanic who is very familiar with XCMG. He made the following points.
    1. XCMG assembles equipment rather than "manufactures" them.
    2. All major components are provided by industry recognized companies. I.E. Cummins, Kawasaki, etc.
    3. Once an operator finds out they are from China, they tend to try to "Prove" they lack quality by running them harder than they normally would.
    4. Some units tend to be great while others seem to break down more easily.
    5. Occasionally the slew ring screws will back out and shear the remaining bolts off, this will separate the cab from the tracks. Ahern included re-torquing these as part of their regular maintenance.
    6. Overall, like most other pieces, they will treat you as good as you treat it.
Additionally, from what I understand, Ritchie Bros purchased all US inventory from either Ahern or United Rentals after United acquired Ahern. The units for auction are all owned by Ritchie Bros at this time.
I ended up buying one at auction for 63k. 2019 - 210 model with 158 hrs on it... yes 158, not 1500. a similar unit from any other manufacturer would cost 2-3x. I more or less paid 1.25/lb. We'll see how it holds up.

Finally, I get some insight into why I am seeing XCMG all over Ritchie Bros with bizarre financing options I have never seen in the description. I was looking at the minis, which are pretty cheap and almost brand new. I am not big in the industry and did not know Ahern went chapter 11. I initially theorized Ahern was so unhappy with XCMG they decided to liquidate their fleet of them! Although you have shown that theory to be untrue, I wonder why United did not want them? I think point number 6 is most relevant. Kind of reminds me of Mahindra, not a household name in the US, but the world's biggest tractor manufacture, just elsewhere in the world. I think I might give it a shot and bid a mini next RB auction. Really appreciate the insight.

The main reason why big companies shed fleets on acquisitions is when purchasing that book of business they gain greater market share and better utilization on their existing fleet. It’s just about money. I hope you fellas that bought have good utilization and little downtime. Remember to make sure your operators pre and post operating checks are done to manufacturers checks. Keep on digging!

Ran a new 30 ton. It ain’t bad for the money I suppose. The joysticks aren’t adjustable the way they are mounted is awkward for me. I’d be interested to run a mini it’s apparently same motor and pumps as kubota

I actually worked for XCMG for 18 months alongside their head engineers so I know everything about the product whilst you guys are left guessing.
3rd largest manufacturer?? Well that’s a joke. They are only large in China because if you do not own a XCMG then you cannot get any large government project work, you’re bullied into buying XCMG.
In the west these throw away machines are not favoured as that’s not our culture.
The workers have told me directly they get paid $50 per week, so they can bring to you a cheap machine, in the west they were here and still only getting their Chinese salary which is illegal, an after school McDonald’s worker gets paid alot more.
Chinese steel quality is amongst the worst in the world, this steel is not to be used structurally in Nz, UK, Australia etc the steel is scrap and the molton consists of rusty bolts etc instead of scrapping it they add it all to the molton to increase the volume hence the machines are rusty under the poor paint work.
Every machine they make is a Chinese “knock off” of another manufacturer, all the mini excavators are Kubota copies, larger excavators are Cat copies, Rolkers are Cat copies, ADT dump trucks are Bell copies, Wheel Loaders are Latorneau copies, there’s no values in knock offs.
The engines are not refined, there’s no testing “you’re the lab rat test” no research and development that’s how they save money, that’s how it all brings the costs down, they do not design they just copy 🤷‍♂️
