Movie fight scenes at their best are spectacular, visceral, and impactful. Films like Creed, John Wick, and Bullet Train have scenes that make you feel every punch.
But not all fight scenes are created equal. Weâve all seen scenes that rely on quick cuts to conceal the absence of actual physical contact, or scenes that just donât land. Crafting a fight that immerses the audience and makes them feel like theyâre in the midst of the action requires a delicate dance between choreography, the work of stunt performers, strategic camera angles, immersive sound effects, and, above all, a compelling story.
Most of the time, actors and stuntmen arenât really hitting each other. So how do they make it feel realistic? In Voxâs latest, stunt coordinator and second unit director Wade Eastwood breaks down the artistry behind creating on-screen battles that leave a lasting impact on viewers, even when the punches arenât real.

The way she punches him feels personal like she was waiting all her life for it
r u the fr hesen?
Can we reverse the genders real quick? In the name of equality.
đ đ
she has an unbeatable left hook!
You are everywhere bro. How?
I like how Eastwood just casually says "you might pop a rib"
đ€Łđ€Łđ€Łđ€Łbro
It's like a guitar player getting a blister. Wrap it in tape and heal it up.
Itâs probably why pro wrestlers are good in action movies. They have to make contact in wrestling, but knows the language of âsellingâ without taking damage.
The movie The Wrestler made me really appreciate wrestlers.
ââ@@Tacom4ster He made me more than apreciate the fighters (â ăŁâ ËÌ©â ââ âźâ ËÌ©â )â ăŁ
WWE wrestlers, for example, make great action movie actors. Rock, John Cena, Hulk Hogan...
â@@kingace6186ive never seen john cena in a movie tbh.

This could have been an "okay" video, but the commitment to actually putting into action the story of the video while you're delivering it is amazing. Show not tell is great but showing and telling at the same time works even better here
This is the tutorial I didn't know I needed.
These stunt guys are amazing and probably deserve more credit and higher pay
Well there are talks for a Stunts catergory for the Oscars
â@@Tacom4ster They invent the categories too late đ
Keanu has huge respect for stuntmen, enough that he gives his stunt team expensive gifts, like Rolexes. One time he gave his whole stunt team Harley-Davidsons
"you might pop a rib" - Eastwood said, gently
Nowadays we usually just actually punch the actors, get rid of their screams in post and let legal take care of the rest. Much cheaper and quicker.
Can't tell what's more impressive: the stuff about the stunts or the Vox recreation of punches.
Nonsense. John wick really shoots all the people in the movie. Thatâs why they have to get 100+ new side characters each year. Do some research Vox!
Vox answering the real questions
Wow! Great work both of you! I think this is the only Vox video that I was smiling from start to finish. You guys can make a convincing action-filled episode!
The example with the cushioned stairs is from Atomic Blonde. If you haven't seen the 10-minute single camera fight scene from that movie, it's definitely worth the watch. Definitely rated R cuz of gore tho so it might not be for everyone.
Also, it isn't actually 1 take like some YT videos say. There are hidden cuts to make filming it practical. But the effect is that it's one take, which makes for a really cool fight.
I hope they do a follow through video about the work of intimacy coordinators and how films shoot love scenes.
CZcamsr Folding Ideas has a 3-part vid miniseries that touches on that very subject (in #2 iirc), among other issues of the films. The first vid is titled "A Lukewarm Defense of 50 Shades".
Lol. What a fun video. You both sold those hits well!
The instructions werenât clear now Iâm facing assault charges
Conveniently for that padded concrete step, old stone steps do actually wear like that in the middle. So it doesn't look so out of place even when you do catch it.
Tom Scott and Jill Bearup did a great video breaking down how all these sorts of fight stunts work behind the scenes, and then they filmed a bar fight. Really fun stuff!
Link?
@@MyysticYT alas, looks like itâs been taken down :(
@@juliegolick Every Frame a Painting's video about Jackie Chan shows some other really cool camera techniques for fight scenes. Great channel about movie making in general.
@@juliegolick Indeed. I saw that video and it was interesting, so I can confirm that it used to exist. I wonder why he had to remove it - did someone not take the "don't try this at home" warning seriously and fly through their livingroom window?
@@L4JPyou can read about it if you look up 'tom scott fight scene'. it was just some trans drama unfortunately.
6:17 is why I love Vox đâ„ (the behind the scenes is always great)
i never thought punches could become jump scares
This video must have been so much fun to make, great stuff
Love both their energy. I was cracking up with the outtakes. đđ€đ
Really fun video. Thanks. You two really sold those punches. So sad how seeing you get slugged got a smile out of me each time!
grandma stood absolutely no chance
Yo you guys really walked the talk with this video's direction, excellent work!
You just indirectly taught us how to talk and sound engaging to the audience
That punch in the beginning caught me completely off guard
One of my fav Vox vids!
Stunts are amazing but complex. It all depends on how the actors and stuntmen or stuntwomen work together.
This punch just become personal
"You might pop a rib"
Mr Eastwood nonchalantly said.
Maybe my favorite Vox video eer. Informative, but also a lot of fun ;-)

This is an awesome video!
Lolđ I love the beginning intro to this video. So funny.đ
Such a fun video!
wow.. I didn't know that they could digitally alter the hit đ
Great episode.
Interesting video!
Haha, really well done! đ
Marvel movie fight scenes have never felt, "Real and visceral "
I recommend Daredevil and Punisher
Shang-chi does have some pretty good fight scenes tho.
Marvel in general? No. That one bus scene from shang-chi? Yes!
CA: Winter Soldier had some pretty good combat scenes
There are some diamonds in the rough from Marvel like the few shang chi fights and the ones from winter soldier
This whole video feels like when you just learnt a new skill and you use it at every corner and every turn you do now đđđđđ
Very interesting video but also really liked you guys acting stuff out
Action movies would be nothing withouut stunt actors.
Another great Vox video, BTW.
Great video
You are amazing Vox
Please also make video on untapped potential of biogas
And biogas from water hyacinth
Thank you
dayum you are doing it so good
Hahahaha, so cool, thanks for the video!
I loved this video! Some great movie magic.
But she punches him feels personalđ đ đ â€
i needed this haha
Same :)
Great video! đ
Shang Chi was awesome!
North By Northwest, 1959. James Mason throws a punch toward the camera. Cut to Martin Landau recoiling from the blow. All done with point of view and editing.
Great breakdown
I love your research so much †can you please make a video on Sanatan Sanstha in India? I was curious to understand that âșïž

Long time Vox, long time. Finally a new vid!
They posted one three days ago...
This guy did a really good job being the b side
Gives new meaning to Fruit Punch!
You should press charges for assault
Good job VOX, good job. Cheers.
I know that this is not a contest, but I still think that the greatest punch I've ever seen on screen is in the first episode of season 6 of Murphy Brown, "The More Things Change." Technically, it's nothing special. But it's just very, very well placed.
I can tell she had fun shooting this video đ
This was great.
Imagine if it was a man punching a woman in the first scene
why would i want to imagine that
@@insertnamehere9950 Iâm just saying that reversing the genders is disturbing because Iâm our society men being abused is funny and woman being abuse is horrible
@@witherpunked5567 no you donât

imagine playing too much action movies until when the time needed to actually punch people for self defense, he misses, obviously.
Hahahahahahah . . . uhum, what a punch line!
Ranjani and the guy did pretty well đ
I used to imagine what if they hit a little too hard and hit the persons face
bro had the arc'teryx drip
Vox earlier use to make so fun vid but now they make vids like this
I thought a lot that it was to make the punch movement like simulating a punch and then change the speed rate so that punch looks real and doesn't speak and then add sound and mix it with a feel-the-damage act.
WHAT!? THAT WAS SO REAL
Insert Bruce Lee & Donnie Yen clips.
Salute to this man who get punched several time in order to record this vid đđđ
Yâall should have coordinated a mini fight at the end.
Yeah, years of martial arts experience alters my perception a little bit.
love One punch Man .
So fun! I love to learn when I don't feel I am being lectured!
Missed the opportunity to intentionally do "accidental" hits on him.
Beautiful
4:56 bruh I didn't know they turned Ana De Armas into Dhalsim
When micheal b took the punch, did he actually get knocked out or did he just sell it really well?
Probably sold it to make it look very impactful. Looking at the end result kind of speaks to the hard work on set.
Why would they let him be knocked out for real and risk a potential brain hemorrhage? You can be hit by a pillow and you would still have the same face in slow mo you know.
Will punch my boss now
that bend in the stairs was a glitch in the Matrix.
I love how she's like "ill hidden chapter your face"
This is so well researched, omg-
When a title makes you unsuscribe
digital extension? wow...
man i was just curious about this
I'm kinda scared to watch Shang Chi now đ
He was so true about the Avengers
Straight up a Tom Scott video huhâŠ
I popped a rib once in a car accident. Excruciating pain every time you laugh or cough or god forbid sneeze. For weeks.
Itâs all about the right camera angles to simulate an impact. đ€
Shang Chi deez nuts.
"SHOOT IT LIVE!!"
Should have included Jackie Chan movies for reference
felt real, when Jackie chan era, they all real lol
Did you get hit any time by accident? :)
