  • I've recently been falling in love with the goddess of a human that is Hilary Hahn. She's so gorgeous and such a beautiful performer, and even after winning 3 GRAMMYs, she has such a fun, wild soul. I hope these clips bring you as much joy as they did for me!

I studied music in college and every week for two years every student in the program had to attend the department's Friday afternoon performance at the campus concert hall. What she mimicked was exactly the kind of rubbish we had to listen to. The whackjob hipsters would always sit right in front tapping their feet pretending they actually knew where the downbeat was. Nobody in their right mind would listen to that garbage, but they pretended they were into it and you just weren't an intellectual if you didn't "get it". Complete rubbish. I think I was the first person to ever fail that class because after a while I couldn't bring myself to even show up and sign in.

I met Ms. Hahn several years ago. I was on Facebook and this ad popped up, saying she will be in my vicinity for a small recital. I bought 3 tix, for me, my late husband, and for our youngest who now is studying jazz piano. She was very pregnant at that time and I believe the pianist was her husband. We saw her on stage and she was absolutely glowing. Her stage presence was beyond captivating and we all felt like there was an aura all around her. She was like a goddess. She played impromptu pieces accompanied by her husband (forgive me if I am wrong).
And then she had a meet and greet after the recital. I asked her if I could get a pic with her. She agreed, but she asked me if I could wait till she was done with all the other guests giving them her autograph.
In person she was like a girl next door, modest, humble, sweet, and kind, like you see in the videos. This baffled us more remembering her stage presence.
She signed my case which is also adorned by Perlman, Bell, Chang, and Ben Folds (at this point, you can say my case values more than my violin, lol). She also signed the cover of my Bach Partitas and Sonatas for solo violin. I framed it.
It was one of the most treasured moments I got to have with my late husband. He was so happy that I got to meet her because he knew how much I adored her. Ms. Hahn, I hope you come to know what you did for me and my late husband.

I interpret this interview with a fish as a subtle metaphor for her own interviews and the questions she often answers. If we substitute the word "fish" by the word "violinist" in the entire interview, it becomes thoughtful, ironic and even more humorous. "So when you decided to be a violinist?" - sort of: but is that even a decision?
I feel that in a way, she is kinda offering journalists another view on reality, for all those who project on her life the image of an "epic life of a heroic woman". The interview with a fish is like a revelation that she is just a simple and ordinary girl, just like everybody (with no more significance than a fish - that's a good perspective!), who hasn't decided anything but was simply dragged by the flow of life. She's the fish being led in life by the conductor-river.
There's the hidden message of genuine humility in that interview, and this message is transmitted through the best way that a really humble person would transmit: with no arrogance, a message disguised as an innocent joke to all interviewers who are sensitive enough to perceive it.

A fan for decades, what a beautiful artist and human. Have always loved the witty fish interview and her gown swim. She made holiday ornaments for 40 min on instagram last year and it somehow was the best and exactly what i needed sitting at home. She is such a gift to the world just being herself and then bringing her masterful playing. I Will see her soon in March. Cant wait.

Love this. I happen to have the privilege of seeing Hilary perform 3 times in San Francisco, once at a small music venue while she was 8 months pregnant, once in front of the full SF Symphony and the last in a solo performance in front of a full symphony hall and it was completely mesmerizing. In all of these her warmth and charming personality shined through even as she mastered the most challenging pieces, including Brahms, Sibelius and Mendelssohn. Even several years after becoming a mother, her youthful energy and fun-loving character shined through. For anyone who had never heard or seen her play before, seeing one performance makes it clear that Hilary's talent and mastery is a gift to our generation of music lovers.

It's about 25 years since I first saw her perform and thought how wonderful to be a member of a species that can produce someone like her. Now the puppet show, the leap into the lake in an evening gown, and the fish interview (!!!) show me that besides being brilliantly talented, she's also brilliantly silly. Now she's 40 (!!! again) and, as she says elsewhere on the InterTube, 40 to 60 is considered the most productive part of a violinist's life! Just imagine!
