The interference rule was created for a good reason: to deter players from interfering with their opponents on the field.
This play had no interference at all. The base runner didn't even see the shortstop.
The alleged interference lasted a millisecond. The shortstop was in no way hindered from catching the ball.
Man, you started off so well and then totally blew it.
@@matrixphijrin what way? how is op’s assessment of the interference call here wrong?
@@matrixphijrnevermind, saw you explain it under a different comment. i still believe it’s a bad rule and should be changed (and i’m an o’s fan, my team benefitted from this)
@@kaphizmey6229 Disagreeing with the rule is an opinion you're entitled to, but the protection exists for a reason. It just doesn't ever happen on a play where there's also an automatic out from an infield fly, so I can understand that it _looks_ absurd if you only apply it to this one play. However on a non-infield fly pop, for instance one that is not hit nearly as high, it would mean substituting the umpire's judgement regarding whether the "interference" hindered the fielder's ability to catch the ball or not. Say the ball hits off the edge of Henderson's glove. Did he just whiff on the catch or did the interference hinder him? That would be left to the umpire's judgement post-play. Should the runners be allowed to run the bases in that instance and nullify the interference because the catch ultimately _wasn't_ made? What if the WS had won on a walkoff on that play? Would that be fair? There's a lot more to consider than just how it looked being applied to a play that was essentially already over because 99.99999999% of popups are caught anyway.
White Sox fans as an O's fan I'm so sorry. It looks like we have been moved up in team priority for calls because calling interference on an automatic out like that is insanity.
Yep, runners should have been allowed to run home and score before the ball was caught because rules don't apply on popups.
@@matrixphijr I don't see where that logic comes from seeing I wasn't against the fact an in field fly rule was called or that the runner had to go back but okay.
@@matrixphijr oh, saw some other comments and you really believe that call was fine. If that's interference then being in the line of sight of the the player making a play might as well be interference. He literally did not interfere with the play.
Also I don't know how you can call interference on an out that already happened technically. If there is no play what did he interfere with?
@@lesliejacoby9137 Lmao typical casual behavior. Call must be wrong because it hurt your feelings, no matter what the actual rule is.
Like you said, it was already an automatic out, so nothing after it should matter. So the runners should just run home and score while the ball is still in the air. The out was already called, so they’re legally tagging up. Or they could have just tackled Henderson, because it was already an automatic out, so there shouldn’t be any interference. Or the coach should have run out of the dugout, caught the ball instead, and run around with it or thrown it in the stands to give the runners time to score. All totally legal because rules don’t apply anymore after infield fly is called.
Whenever you’re done throwing a tantrum and want to read the rule for interference that says that any runner who hinders or impedes a fielder’s ability to catch or throw the ball, intentionally or unintentionally, is guilty of interference and should be called out, and that the fielder has absolute right of way when attempting to field a ball and runners are required to move out of their way unless standing on a base, I’ll consider anything else you say valid.
@@matrixphijr "call must be wrong because it hurt your feelings". Read my very first comment again. I'm just gonna dispute that because this matters much more to you than it ever will or should to me especially when the result favored my team. Have a good day/night.

What a horrendous call to end the game there!
Yankee fan doesn't know baseball rules. Shocker!
@@matrixphijr I'm newish to baseball so can you explain what happened lol
@@mubashirmohiuddin5346 They called interference by the runner on second, but I think it's a nonsense call since the infield fly had been called and he had still plenty of time to catch the ball anyway. Aditionally, the runner didn't do any move to block the infielder or anything, he was just going back to the base normally not knowing where the infielder was.
A yankee crying
@@luisjaviersecades3539 The call was right. Fielder has right of way and in this case the runner DID obstruct his path to the ball, albeit barely and unintentionally. Interference should still be called during infield flys because runners can advance at their own peril.
Imagine this extreme example if this were not the case: bases loaded & infield popup. If runners have no fear of offensive interference of being called, a runner could box out a fielder so that the ball drops and the runner on 3rd scores.
Calls need to be reasonable. If this play can be called as interference, then shortstops could always just plant themselves behind the runner and whenever the ball is hit in the infield, the runner would be called out for interference. Just because you can technically justify it in the rule book doesn't mean it should be called interference.
Anthony Santander did evey category on the stat sheet in this game and Ryan Mountcastle went 4-5 in this game he was active in this game Grayson Rodriguez did ok even dough he threw five walks.⚾
Brewers fan here. That was the worst call I have ever seen in my 60 years of following baseball.
Dementia hits hard
I'm an O's fan, lived in Baltimore my entire life. That call to end the game was stupid. I could understand if one of the Sox players tripped him to prevent him from making that play, but that little bit of contact being called interference is stupid. He didn't get interfered with at all.
Completely misquotes the rule but the call is wrong because reasons.
@@matrixphijr I see you've been defending this call in basically every reply to every comment... Tell me, how does it feel to have MLB officially rule you to be wrong? (They came out and said that better judgement should have been used here.)
@@daysandwords Lol not true at all but believe whatever you want. Idiots who don’t know the rules already thought I was wrong before 🤣
What an absolutely terrible call to end the game... runner was in the base path looking at the ball the whole time and was moving back to 2nd. Why can they not have a crew chief review in such a crucial point in the game? Horrible officiating
I cannot wait for a breakdown by Jomboy.
I thought the exact same thing and I was already looking for it, LOL
Fan of Jomboy myself but the hype he is getting is a tad ridiculous. He deserves his flowers but when you have MLB announcers name dropping him it becomes overdone….
That said, I was also looking as well
@@paulinekong1830 They are not name dropping him. If something becomes well known enough, you're going to talk about it. That's like saying that an Orioles commentator is name dropping Gunnar Henderson because they commentate on the game. Good point. When it's called infield fly rule does that mean the batter is called out anyway EVEN if Henderson had dropped the catch?

Que paso hay por qué metieron ese doble play....no entendí
The Chicago Bears are in the house!
"How about the bears offense" 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I'm still not understanding how the final call was a double play.
Interference was called on the runner at 2nd for impeding the fielder’s ability to get to the popup, which means the runner is automatically out. The out on the infield fly popup + the out for interference = double play.
Fielders have absolute right of way when attempting to field a batted ball. Any runner MUST get out of their way unless they are standing completely on a base (and even then must reasonably allow the fielder room to get to the ball without having to abandon the base - for instance leaning out of the way). The runner on 2nd did not (because he wasn’t paying attention) and the fielder had to go around him to get to the ball. Everything else is irrelevant to the interference - that there was already an automatic out on the infield fly, that there was no contact/ it was not intentional, that the fielder still caught the ball.
“ because he wasn’t paying attention” do you mean he needs to spin his head around to see if a fielder behind him is coming at him? Nonsense
@@patrickmckermitt3104 Yes. Literally. Lmao.
He also had the chance to be aware of Henderson's position pre-pitch when leading off the base, as, you know, _most good baserunners do,_ which is why the White Sox are a 15-36 team.

White Sox manager said it best, it was a good call, but a terrible rule. It’s like the old NFL tuck rule, and MLB should take a look and make an adjustment. This one, for a change, isn’t really on the umpires.
Nah it was a bad call. The rule says "if the runner is ADJUDGED to have interfered with the play"... So, pretty easy there: Don't adjudge the runner to have interfered, since he didn't.

Sorry White Sox fans, we are with you on this one
i can see it ....but i dont like that the game ends like this ... c mon ump !!!
I may be an Orioles fan, but I won’t defend that call that blew it for the White Sox.
If I was a Sox fan I'd be livid. Especially since they almost completed a huge comeback in the 9th
If the infield fly rule was in effect then why would it matter if that runner got in Gunnar’s way the batter would be out regardless of if the catch was made lol. I’ll take the W tho
Because the ball is still live after an infield fly is called. Runners can still run the bases and potentially score if the ball isn’t actually caught. So it’s important that the fielder be able to get to the ball, and the fact he was impeded at all by the runner makes this interference.
I'm not a fan of either team, but I hate interference calls like that especially when a player can abuse it to get a favorable call, and it can't be said that they don't, seen many highlights of catchers bumping deliberately into a batter on a pop up just to insure they get an out whether they catch the ball or not. I know calls go both ways, but that was a horrible way to end a potential comeback win.

What a bullshit call. The runner went back to second base, where tf else was he supposed to go?
I won’t defend that call, even though I’m an Orioles fan.

It was only 2 outs at da end!! We can't catch a break!! Another L for da Good Guys!
I'm an Orioles fan and that 9th inning is an embarrassment. More than any other professional sports league, MLB officials (umpires) feel the need to get themselves involved in the outcome of games. Why? Is it all about fame so the books they inevitably write will sell better? It's getting ridiculous. MLB needs to take action.
You're right, the 9th inning was an embarrassment... for the Orioles pitching. In every other way it was completely legitimate.
The call was for interference was surprising at first, but replay showed that Gunnar had to race around the runner in the way. Based on that...good call. Never seen that to end a game in over 45 years of watching, playing, and coaching.
I don’t care what the rule book says. That’s the worst call at the worst time. What a bad look

By hook or by crook, lol. That ending was terrible!
Let's go White Sox!
Outrageously terrible call! The defender caught the ball, so where is the interference? The umpires have become a huge problem with baseball. They seem to think the fans come out to see them. The umpire's union has chosen to not enforce incompetent performance among the umpires. They don't care if the umpires are accurate or not! It's time to go with AI umpires. And the umpires have no one to blame but themselves.
Completely misunderstanding the rule. Interference is called when the interference happens, regardless of what happens afterward. It’s not a, “Oh let’s go back and change the call because he caught it anyway.”
Hypothetically, what if this is a non-infield fly situation where the same level of runner interference occurs, but then the fielder comes in and has the ball go off the end of his glove and get booted way into foul territory or somewhere he has to chase it? Is that not interference either because, “he had a chance to catch it but booted it so it’s his own fault”? No.
Pass interference in football is still pass interference even if the receiver still makes the catch.
