  • One of the largest medieval dynasty castles in Westphalia was the Falkenburg near Detmold-Berlebeck. The hilltop castle was built around 1194 by Bernhard II zur Lippe and his son Hermann II and served as the seat of government in Lippe until the middle of the 15th century. In the 16th century the Falkenburg was abandoned and left to decay. Princess Pauline used the abandoned castle in 1802 as a quarry for building roads and houses. With the start of the excavation work in 2004, the inconspicuous ruins became an impressive and mighty castle complex, which is particularly popular for family trips and hiking days.
